Dry Loop DSL (i.e. internet service without a land line)
Hi
We are moving into the south slope later this month.
We are trying to work our different high-speed internet options. We can't use cable, so we can only get DSL. Apparently, you can get DSL service without having to sign up for a landline. Verizon offers something called "dry loop" service. Perhaps other providers in the neighbourhood offer something similar.
I'd be very grateful to hear about any experiences with these services. Price isnt the concern. I'm particularly keen to hear how long it takes to get the service hooked up and how often it fails to work.
Thanks a lot.

why can't you use cable?

I wish I knew. The owner has specified in the lease that we have to use use DirectTv (for TV) and DSL for internet. -
That's bizarre. I wonder why. Did you talk to your landlord about it?
-
Very bizarre. I wonder if they are doing something shady and don't want the cable company coming to do any work the house
Plus, I've done DSL and even though Time Warner just missed ANOTHER appointment with me today (!@(*&;*^~@), the speed of cable v. DSL was much better (I tried both - and I also supposedly live close to the CO, which is what determines your DSL speed) -
FYI for those who want to know more ...
and it looks like a major cluster ---- for Verizon, that company with such superior service ....
remember - Verizon STILL owns the lines -

 That is weird. I'd like to know why, too. If you find out, please post. -
You should check into the legality of your landlord dictating what utility service you can use. Call 311 and ask to be put in touch with DoITT or you can access their website via nyc.gov.

Maybe your landlord has cable internet and doesn't want competition for bandwidth.

I am the OP, just as a follow-up: after going back to the landlord (as was suggested on this board) they clarified that the problem is that the building is not yet wired for cable -something which Time Warner confirmed when I called them. Weird.
So, I guess it is dry-loop DSL.
BTW, Verizon may tell you that the Dry loop service is not available, and that you need to take some basic phone service in order to get DSL. My advice is to be persistent. I kept arguing with the salesperson and then put her on hold, to collect my thoughts and do the math on the DSL/phone bundle they were offering.
When I came back on the line, the salesperson suddenly indicated that Dry Loop was in fact available, with no phone line required (!!!). -
Did you check with Cablevision too?

I have Verizon drywall in the South Slope... it works really well with wireless (we use airport) and very rarely goes out. The signal's pretty strong too. One person at Verizon tried to tell us it was impossible to get such a thing, but we called back another day, got someone else who knew what they were talking about, and had it set up in about 10 days.

Whoa, Verizon drywall? Are they branching out? -

Lokks like the building's is PS, which is Time Warner's exclusive territory. -
I'm in Windsor Terrace and have Verizon DSL. I consistently get 3 mbs day and night. Few outages and I don't think any more than when I had TWC in the city. Works fine for me to work remotely via terminal server
