Dangerous dog in Prospect Heights
Just wanted to notify members of this board: On Wednesday night (7/11), I was walking to the Key Foods on Washington Ave. and Lincoln. As I rounded the southeast corner, a dog that was chained outside jumped out and bit my hand - totally unprovoked.
I approached the owner, who was standing nearby, and asked for her contact information, which she gave me, and then I quickly returned home to clean the bite, and figure out what to do next. Unfortunately I did not think to ask her for ID at the time, and after I spoke with someone in the Department of Health, I called her to get the information needed to monitor the dog for rabies, etc., and it turned out that she'd given me a false phone number, and probably name.
I now have to go through the full series of rabies shots, have had to make 2 visits to the emergency room and will make 4 additional visits to my doctor.
Please beware of this dog!
It was female and looked similar to a pit bull, though I'm not sure of the breed. It had a reddish-brown coat, with white markings, and the owner was using a large chain as a leash.
I would also really appreciate knowing if anyone sees this dog and owner around the neighborhood. I'd like to try to get accurate information from her, so that I might avoid the remaining shots for the vaccine, etc. I would also like to properly identify the dog for the authorities, so that an assessment can be made about whether she poses a danger to the community.
The owner was approx. 5'8", 150lbs, with medium skin tone and long black curly hair. The name she gave me was "Talaiy Wills."

lincolnite, did the dog bite any of your fingers? I ask because my mom was bitten by a dog one the finger last week. She ended up having to get antibiotics because it became infected in a few hours. She now has to go to a hand surgeon because of possible nerve damage. The doctors in the ER told her you have to be extremely careful with fingers, there are alot of blood vessels and nerves. Just wanted to make sure you'll get the care you need.
As for the dog, I hope you see that woman again so you can get the rabies info you need. Anytime you see an idiot walking a dog with a chain you can bet they aren't the best dog owners. I have a pit that's sweet as can be and I'm always trying to make up for those shitty owners. Are there any neighbors you could ask? Maybe store owners around there might know who she or the dog is? Good luck and I hope your hand feels better! -
Ugh, rabies shots. You poor thing.
The first ones are the worst. -
Oh man, I'll be on the lookout for that dog.
I guess if something like that goes down, you have to call the police ASAP. But how exactly do you get the dog owner to stick around? -
Thanks to all for your concern! My hand is fine - I did indeed get the same info from the ER doctor and am on antibiotics too.
I did also ask around my building, and at the stores on Washington, but unfortunately no leads yet. We'll see.
I should have just asked to see the owner's ID, but didn't think of it at the time...
Thanks again to all. -

if she gave you fake info, she probably would not have shown you i.d. so, don't feel too bad about that.

they are known to bite and suck -
If any of you are walking in the area of St. Mark's place, on the East side of Franklin Ave, be forewarned : there are at least 2 (possibly 3) Shepherd mixes who are sometimes chained, sometimes loose in the yard of one of the houses on the North side of the street. My 2 dogs were rushed by these dogs about 2 months ago and it was terrifying. The "owner" (?) called them off and I called 911. These poor dogs are a nuisance and when they are chained out front they are screaming at other dogs (from across the street) and redirecting that aggression onto each other. Be careful.
Howdy, Stranger!
