Redevelopment of Semer Sleep mattress factory to condos — Brooklynian

Redevelopment of Semer Sleep mattress factory to condos

I just learned that the mattress factory at 1901 8th ave (corner of 19th st) is applying for a zoning variance so that they can convert the factory to residential use. Our house is nearly adjacent to the factory and I'm having nightmares about construction problems, underminded foundations, etc, etc. Given recent history of developments in the South Slope I'm not optimistic about the process, or final product, at the mattress factory.

Anybody have any ideas what I can do to try and stop it?

Many thanks for any suggestions.

  • I just got some more information on the project from Aaron B. at Concerned Cit. for Greenwood Heights, who put my mind at ease, somewhat, about the proposed factory conversion. He was in favor of the project, as (he said) they intend to keep the factory facade, not build up any more, actually diminishing the footprint of the building.

So, I'm breathing (a bit) easier. Still, more to learn about the project.
  • If the condo conversion goes as planned (and approved by CB7), the building will be a stellar example of what can be done in our neighborhood as a rehab, rather than a knock down. :)

But don't get me started ;)
