cats of the move.

so i am moving in with roommates which for the cats is a bonus cause it means they have about 3 - 4 times more space then they do now .... lots of places to hide and lay about, more levels to climb, etc.

to prep for the move, i've already got a second litterbox going in my house, this one covered so they can have 2 options and get used to using the covered one also. so far, so good! they like it!

i also got feliway...its been about a week and i do not see any difference...i am using the plugin. it says it can take up to 4 weeks to see a difference, but is this thing a hoax? i just don't see it accomplishing anything.

any advice for my kitties' first move?

  • When I move, I have a friend take them for a few days, starting at least a day before the move. I started doing this a couple of moves ago, when I discovered that the previous tenant had left mouse poison, mousetraps, and roach hotels all over the place (never did see a mouse or a roach in the place -- I think he was just crazy). It took a couple of days to find and get rid of all those and clean the place really thoroughly, and I didn't want the kitties getting into anything dangerous or toxic. Bonus: Doing it that way also meant I didn't have to worry about them escaping while the front door was opened frequently during moving (or having to lock them into their cat carrier for a long period of time), and it also gave me time to make sure all the window screens were secure. Also, it's nice to not have to worry about them running around underfoot when you're doing really heavy lifting or trying to move things about. It just seems safer to have them be elsewhere for a couple of days when all that stuff is going on. Now I wait till I've been at the new place a day or two and gotten some of the major unpacking done before I bring them to their new home so that a lot of the familiar objects and smells are already there for them. And I make sure I have a bunch of catnip ready when they first get there, and I spend some time just watching them check the place out, talking to them and petting them to reassure them while they explore.

Don't worry too much about it -- cats handle moving pretty well. All the packing kind of freaks them out a bit, but it's nothing traumatic. Oh, and you should be sure they have access to the windowsills at the new place when you bring them home for the first time, because they will DEFINITELY be fascinated with whatever new view they have!
  • Oh yeah, one more thing -- be careful not to accidentally tape up a box with a cat in it.

Yes, that really happened. You know how they are about boxes, and you know how you get in sort of a trancelike autopilot mode sometimes when packing? I had started wondering where Neely was and then I heard the faintest mewing coming out of a box I'd sealed up a good two hours earlier! :)
  • I moved with 3 cats recently. It took them some time to get used to the new place, but they did get used to it. They hovered around me a lot the first nights. One of them went into hiding way up high. Basically they might not be quite themselves for a few days (once in the new place) even a week or so, but they should adjust as you adjust... Moving is a big deal for everyone, even it's just around the corner...
