New: Brownstone Bagel Bread Co.

I was walking by 4th ave and Union a couple of days ago and noticed Brownstone Bagel is almost open. I took a look through the window and the place looks good. One of the owners came up to me and told me he plans to open in a couple of weeks and they'll be baking their own bagels fresh. :D
Now lets talk about schmear, will they have sun dried tomato?

are there bagel places that don't make their own bagels fresh?
  • I'm hoping from their name that they'll make other loaves of bread, not just bagels. I don't think there is any place by that corner to get fresh baked goods. I could be wrong.
  • Ok this place is open now. Picked up a menu and the prices on the sandwiches where a bit high but I'll give them a try this week. Brownstoner had a quick blurb on it too. The comments there were very positive.

    Has anyone been there yet?

  • Gotta love that last AY comment on brownstoner... I need to check this place out though!
  • had a tuna sandwich from here this evening. i enjoyed it and overheard the staff say that they're keeping it open till 2am, which is a great boon to those of us who take the R at Union St.

I had such high hopes for the new place (especially since Bageltique went to hell under the new owners), but I've been in there twice: both disappointing.

First of all, they didn't have what I ordered off the menu. Future restaurant owners, listen up: DO NOT OPEN TILL YOU'RE PREPARED TO OPEN. Jeez, is it so hard. If my first time trying your store you don't have what I want, how bad an impression does that make? One turn-off like that and plenty of people won't bother again.

But the worst part is that they totally swiped my change--both times!!! One time it came to $3.90 and the kid gave me back 6 dollars and quickly turned away to do something else. I got his attention again and said, "where's my dime?". Fine, maybe it was a mistake, whatever. But it totally happened the second time I went, also. That is so, so shady.
  • Here's the original thread on Brownstone Bagels.

  • I went there -- but they didn't have iced coffee so I left.
  • I've been there twice so far. The bagels are alright. Their iced coffee is god awful and expensive. Bageltiques' is better. Hell, Around the Clock (the deli on the corner across the street) has better iced coffee.

    gawdawful weak or strong?
(the only iced coffee I love around here is from Gorilla)
  • I've tried the bagels twice and found that they were slightly undercooked each time. I'll let them be open a month or so and try them again before I write them off. I assume it takes a little bit of time to work out the kinks especially if you are an independent food service establishment. I'm just happy a Dunken Donuhts did not open in this spot.

God awful weak. And i agree, Gorilla is where it's at.
  • Blue Sky is good too... and their muffins are the best I've ever had. But according to my source, their hot coffee is not up to par with the iced.

Still haven't tried Brownstone Bagels... but will report back when I do!
  • flexi, you're a traitor to the nabe. you shouldn't be down there getting bagels when we have terrace up here. plus they have rugelach and black and white cookies.
  • I have to say that as person who truly loves bagels and works in providing the best customer service - this place is very disappointing! The bagels are decent, but the selection was a sad layout. They should have waited to open until their shelves were fully stocked and they could handle more than one customer at a time. I agree, the coffee was terrible - I had it iced and I swear when I took a sip through my straw, a piece of coffee filter came thru - yuck! I had to wait 10 minutes with only one person in front of me.
I also agree the prices are a little steep - I work down the block from Dean and Deluca in Soho and I pay the same price, but for an iced latte!
I hope they get their act together so we can have a decent place open near the train :-)

BP, what type of chemicals are you using in your studio? I'm not part of this thread! I love me some Terrace Bagels.....and all of the nice people who work there. Hell, I even load up and bring those hunks of dough love to my mom when I visit her......and some lox, too (for her, I don't eat that stuff).
  • i don't know why i thought you were writing here. oops!
  • Ding-a-ling ;-)

Trois Pommes has good coffee - Iced and not. Yes, it's Gorilla, and they also know how to brew it.
  • well perhaps if you all complain enough about this place, they'll go out of business and you can get a nice bank in that spot.

while the bagels may not be your favorite, or you might prefer a different layout of bagels (what the hell?) keep in mind that it's an independent shop just trying to give it a go.

and places like this may open before everything is picture perfect so that they can pay the rent while working out the kinks. opening a business is a risky, expensive proposition.

given how badly 4th avenue needs services like this, i'm shocked how many people want to trash it. your comments are keeping people away. if that's your goal, feel free. but unless there are rats, the bagels are not edible or something else severe, this is one of those places that will survive (or not survive) only on word of mouth....
  • I think this place will survive (or not) due to proximity to the subway. The business is basically theirs to lose, since they share an intersection with the R train. So far, they're not doing so great and the criticisms here are honest.
Too expensive iced coffee that isn't even good? Feh...
  • Listen, if ya don't like the coffee & prices... Say Something.
They're new, it's the perfect time to personally give them your suggestions.

The owners seem nice and friendly. Talk to them.
  • I stopped in this morning for a sesame bagel w/ cream cheese, and it was pretty good. We went last weekend, and I got the wrong bagel (but it was still tasty, regardless). So I'll be willing to give it another shot...
  • Mamacita is just so right on this.. You don't like the stuff in dunkin doughnuts... no reason to bring it up to the manager.. but this is private business and good chance they want feedback.
  • I'm going to give it a shot this weekend. We need a good place like that now, since Bageltique has destroyed itself. Since the renovation and new owners (who seem well-meaning, but can't keep it together) I can't handle the place anymore. I wanted to keep giving them a chance to get back on track, but if Brownstone turns out to be better (or at least able to NOT mess up a bagel with cream cheese and tomato) they've got my business.
  • I just tried this place last night for the first time. I ordered an assortment of bagels and sat down to try them with a friend, and we both agreed that they're the best we've tasted in Park Slope. They did have a problem with my very minor cash transaction, but I can tell that the quality of the bagels there is fantastic. I haven't tried the coffee or sandwiches yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
  • I tried them this afternoon. The bagel was a little bready for my taste; I prefer Bagel Delight. That said, it was good enough that I think I'd be a regular if I lived nearby.
  • I live 1.5 blocks away and was very thrilled to see this place being built. After giving them 4 tries, I've got to say that BBB is a big disappointment for the following reasons:
    1. The bagels are very mediocre. A perfect NYC bagel should be chewy/doughy on the inside and it should have a thin, but crispy crust. BBB's bagels are either too dried out or undercooked and the crust is very thick.
    2. Other breads are equally mediocre and quite flavorless.
    3. They keep their breads out in the open on top of the main counter. I've seen several customers leaning over them, breathing on them and even sneezing on them. These are the same breads that your sandwiches will be made with. Yuck.
    4. They have a huge beverage fridge, but it's stocked with a dismal selection of cold drinks.
    5. The coffee is truly awful, muddy and grainy tasting. Even the nearby corner delis make a better cup of coffee.
    6. They constantly run out of things you want. And they don't know how to make their so-called signature sandwiches. I ordered a sandwich that claimed to come with "shaved reggiano," but I wound up with some soft and bland cheese (maybe Muenster?).
    7. The "baby field greens" for my sandwich came out of a large cardboard box sitting on the floor near the cooler. Yuck again.
    8. Yesterday I ordered a sandwich and witnessed the staff arguing about it in front of me. The sandwich maker asked one of the kitchen helpers to get him something from the cooler and the guy yelled back: "Get it yourself!" They were all so pissed off, I was worried that they may be doing god-knows-what to my food in the back.
I will not be buying anything "freshly made" from this shop, perhaps just packaged goods.
I was impressed that I was able to get food there at 4:15 in the morning, but that's about the only positive thing I can say about this place.
  • Ice coffee is for people who don't drink coffee. You are suckers for paying anywhere close to 2 bucks for it. It is day old coffee that sits in a dirty pitcher, not brewed strong, just whatever is left over from the night before. Go get ice cream instead

I hope you don't work somewhere that serves iced coffee...

and just fyi, it's for people who like iced coffee. in the summer, when it's hot fer instance.
A good place does a special batch, strong so that the ice dilutes it nice...
