The helicopters are like flies. That would make Prospect Heights a giant corpse. Scratch that thought.
It’s annoying and scary at the same time!!! -
I think part of it is that we (or part of PH anyway) are right under the flight path of the new (this year) commercial helicopter transports from JFK to Manhattan. They're those blue ones, I think. Other helicopters hover, but these have started zipping over, very loudly, all day long.
-
i think that helicopter is looking for someone
talked to a foot patrol cop tonight and all he would say is: "sometimes it's easier to see things from above"
there have been a rash of shootings on franklin this week
it shouldn't raise eyebrows that there might be a helicopter circling the area though it's interesting that it is concentrating west not east
honestly, i think anyone that is wondering about this should call the precinct and ask about it. there has definitely been an increase in "activity" lately and if there is no community outcry there's not likely to be much of a police response either
check out the crown heights forum if you need further info -
But was that even an NYPD copter yesterday? The one to which most here are referring was fairly generic, with no markings, and had a large camera or other imagery equipment pod on the front. Does the NYPD have unmarked helicopters?
-
Twice this weekend, I saw groups of military helicopters flying low over the neighborhood.
I didn't like that. -
Wasn't just over the neighborhood. I was in the car on 4th Ave on the way to Red Hook when I saw three come over the bay and head towards central Brooklyn. We were hypothisizing that they had something to do with security for the UN, perhaps ferrying people in from the airport to the city?
That is different from the helecopter out yesterday that seemed to hang over PH/CH for about an hour in the middle of the day. Don't know what they were doing. -

Yup - thats what I saw too.

If you also see folks with shoulder-launched SAMs trying to take them out, be sure to let us all know, mkay? -

but not if you think it's scary. that'd be fear mongering. -

The ones I saw--three green 'banana' helicopters in a group sure looked like transport helicopters to me. In DC when they fly dignitaries around, it's typically in a group of 3 transport helicopters like that. Bush, et al. are in town at the UN this week, right? Not an expert--just, that's what I figured it was. -
Its probably because of the UN Sumit

Me too, oh wait, I was with you, sorry Brook!

And didn't the Philadelphia police dept fire bomb a certain building from a helicopter? -
Yes, back in 1985, the Philly cops bombed the communal residence of MOVE, a radical group, after failing to serve some arrest warrants: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOVE
-
yeah Philadelphia Fire, the John Edgar Wideman book about that incident, is pretty awesome, albeit dense and pretty difficult to get through.

I remember MOVE really vividly, since I grew up outside the city. The first charity drive that I remember wasn't for victims of a natural disaster--it was bringing canned food and household goods to school for the people whose houses had been burned to the ground.
I found this 1985 NYT article sort of interesting, even though it's badly scanned. -

Is it just me, or does there seem to be a lot more air traffic (commercial jet) over the neighborhood in general lately? I never noticed that we seem to be directly under a flight path until earlier this year when I kept hearing jets soaring over my building every ten minutes one night. Maybe I just became more aware of it suddenly, but I had never really noticed in the 2-1/2 years prior. Now, I notice them all the time - from the park, the street, etc. -
In March 2003, right before the Iraq War started, I observed the following in Park Slope:

It was very unsettling, especially with all the tension about the war.
Turns out it was in honor of a fallen cop. I hope when I die I will be commemorated by burning thousands of gallons of helicopter fuel.

Shouldn't be a problem. Just make the arrangements in advance so that your last wishes will not be a burden to those who survive you. I mean, you want them thinking, "That Stevo was one hell of a guy!" and not, "Those fucking helicopters were a pain in the ass to round up. What a tool!"

Make arrangements? Heck no. I want the taxpayers to foot the entire fareeking bill. -

Good plan. I should be ready to do it about 110 years from now. Remind me then.
