Mitchell's on Flatbush
Subject: Mitchell's on Flatbush
Mitchell's restaurant, which I never seemed to notice before yesterday, moved across the street from their previous location and it's frickin' SWEET.Nice dining area upstairs, lounge and beautiful outdoor patio downstairs. The owner said there's going to be live jazz and "hooka." (food, not the other kind).
I haven't actually been there yet, but the owner showed me around yesterday afternoon. Looks extremely promising.

Mitchell's is good. Years ago after signing our first lease, my roommate and I went there for greens, pork chops, and some other good stuff. Hopefully the new spot will have longer hours. The old place was hardly ever open when I went by.

Mitchell's on Vanderbilt?
-
It's on Flatbush, but I can't remember what the cross street is...it's near Pinchik's Hardware I think.
-
but on the other side of the street.
-
Is the Flatbush place related in any way to the soul food place on Vanderbilt?
-
Not as far as I'm aware, but since I eat there three times a week, I'll ask.
Mitchell's on Vandy is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, maybe that's why it seems they have "odd hours".
The dark meat fried chicken, potato salad and corn on the cob is the way to go, btw. -
These guys have a great take out/deli sandwhich line up besides the full dining room. Those of you who remember Charcutterie at St Marks and Flatbush (now Dunkin Donuts) will be familiar with the sandwhiches (they were the subject of much praise on this board a few years back). I don't have a menu in front of me but if I remember right there was a huge selection of sandwhiches for $7.50 on a roll or $8.50 on a hero.
They also had a 1/2 pound kobe beef hamburger for $17. Curious to know what that is like.
I think they may be open for breakfast too. Saw a bunch of bagels in the window the other morning on my way to the subway at 6:45 AM. -
Is the new Mitchell's related to Charcuterie? Same owners?
Are they open for lunch? -

That was the plan when Charcuterie closed. It's taken so long for this place to open that I had wondered if the plan changed.

I'm torn on whether to patronize this place, since the owner overcharged me more than once at Charcuterie and I've heard he has not been a good landlord to his residential tenants in the building where Mitchell's is located. Sounds tempting though . . .
This is a work of fiction, and any similarities to persons living or dead is merely coincidental . . . -
my roommate & i ordered pizza from here the other night. it took 40 minutes for it to get delivered (granted we should have just walked there), but it was very tasty. And $15 for two pizzas with toppings & 2 sodas is a pretty good deal.

This just in.
Mitchell's on Flatbush has nothing to do with Mitchell's on Vandy. -

I went tonight. In addition to the two sections above there is a good sized bar downstairs and a massive patio out back with...water feature! (waterfall). I like the fact that the menu ranges from 20 kinds of $8 heroes to full-on $25 steaks. $7 frozen margarita was a solid choice as well. they clearly spent some money on the place. -
we had dinner, drinks, and hooka at the outdoor patio there the other night. very friendly staff and service, nice lighting/candles/atmosphere. we were very pleased with our overall experience. i had the lamb w. grilled veg and my boyfriend had the chicken stuffed with spinach and some kind of cheese i think (?), served w. hand cut potato chips. both were really good. our waitress even gave us a free serving of a dessert that we'd never heard of and inquired about. SWEET. oh, there's also a flatscreen tv downstairs at the bar and i believe i noticed one upstairs, too, in the back room as we were on our way down.

I noticed this place last week. Pulled up for a sammich on Sunday. It was delicious. I talked to the owner, and he did run Charcutier (sp). He was self serving me and making sure I was happy. The back patio looks AWESOME. I am planning to have dinner there very soon. Apparently the steak is the way to go. Again, my sandwich was super good. And I am a hero snob.

I went this morning while trying to figure out subway delays and see if I could get to work. Knowing full well that they were probably half-staffed since nobody can commute anywhere, we stopped in here for some sandwiches and iced tea. I have to say the place is charming, nicely done and looks fun in the back too. My sandwich was among the best I have ever had, the owner was really very nice, and it was a great experience. I truly can't wait to go back to somewhere that's delicious, good prices, nice people and fun. Just what the neighborhood needed!

Any recs on what to order, sandwich or otherwise?
With all this crappy weather I don't feel like cooking. -
Hmm. Mayhaps a happy hour is in order...
-
I'd be totally into a Mitchell's happy hour.
-
anyone been there on a Saturday night? I'm trying to find a good place to go out with some girlfriends for my birthday next month, and this sounds like a fun place to get some food and hang out
-
I just went last night. The waiter was telling me and my friend all about how they've "soft opened" but haven't had their grand opening yet. So far, not many people seem to know about it -- there were only two or three other parties in the backyard with us, and that patio is huge. Now would be a great time to go before the word gets out too much -- it was really peaceful out there.
We had a nice bottle of wine, I had the kobe burger (which was delish), and we smoked a hookah after dinner.
It's really beautiful out back (inside was pretty too but that patio was just gorgeous). There's a full bar downstairs. And all the staff we spoke with were super-attentive and just so nice. Loved it!! -
How does the Hookah work with the smoking ban?

Huh. I didn't think about that. But hookah smells MUCH nicer than ciggies, for whatever it's worth. -
seems they were smoking the hookah on the patio so ....

Subject: Brunch
Just had brunch at Mitchell's. It was really good. We got to sit out back in the huge patio. The staff still seemed to be working some kinks out but were really nice and the service was good.
The brunch menu was very short but it still wasn't easy to choose what to get. The two of us had the granola and foccacia bread for starters and the burger and french toast as our main courses. The portions were generous, though the toast could have a little more spice. The homemade chips were awesome!
I'm too dumb to post an image here, so I'll post a link to a pic of the brunch menu. Very high-tech

If I go to heaven when I die, the old Charcutterie's sandwiches will be waiting there for me. And they'll still be 5 bucks.

Those two brothers were good guys, I hope their new place does well. Every time I pass by there seems to be people in there. -
Just had dinner at Mitchell's for the first time tonight. The back room is totally gorgeous.. great place to bring a date, and of course the food was excellent. Prices are moderate for Flatbush Ave, but it's worth it just for the atmosphere. 8)

their sandwiches are a steal for how big and awesome they are.
cant wait for it to cool off so I can go hang out on the patio again. -
i know the owner is a great guy and everything... friend of the patrolman of every state and all... but if the food is so great why does it stay empty all the time. Im sure they can still make a bangin hero, but when I went for brunch it was ghostland with Celine Deion pumped in all morning. And the brunch menu (besided the humus thing) was like:
1: Eggs with toast and sausage
2: eggs with pancakes, toast and sausage
3: Eggs with pancakes, waffles, sausage and bacon
Should prob just return to being a deli. Gonna go under within the year otherwise. Too much space (rent) too few customers. -

Simple - because while they are aiming for a more 'mature' crowd, they have not hit the right note for the neighborhood newcomers, who are a bunch of flakes. That's why 'Franny's' was packed to capacity when I walked by on my way down to a fantastic meal in an empty Mitchell's. No suprise there, matter of fact, I would be shocked if it were the other way around.
Anyway, I believe that the owners own both the building they're in now as well as the one they used to be in, so rent shouldn't be a problem for them.
