reno at lincoln and new york?
does anyone know what's up with the apartment buliding on the southeast corner of lincoln and new york? my girlfriend was walking to the subway the other day and a guy standing outside said:
"hey, there are going to be studios, 1 bdrms and 2 bdrms opening up in this building soon, all new. tell your friends. they can stop by and ask for david."
she felt a little weird about it because she's white, and she felt like david (who was jewish) was sort of saying, "hey, get all your white friends to move in (and jack the rents up)" which may or may not be what was going on. in any case, it seems like something is afoot in that building. anyone else heard anything?

Subject: Jews and Money
Why does it have to be about money, just because the guy is Jewish? I've lived in Crown Heights at New York and Eastern Parkway for the last 10 months, and I must say that the general mentality in the neighborhood is relief when they see all the younger white folk moving in from the Park Slope area. This neighborhood has been over-run with crime and gangs for the last 40 years (+/-), and it's nice to live in an area with lower crime. Even if he WAS the owner, you can't blame him for wanting tenants who will actually pay the rent. Having "hipsters" move in isn't going to raise the rent- rent is only rising in this area, anyway. -

Black people don't pay the rent, huh?
I've also lived on New York and Lincoln for the last 10 months, and I'm not sure I've seen a whole lot of good feelings displayed towards the white hipsters moving in. Not a lot of hostility, but it's not like the long-time residents of CH are throwing parties when hipsters show up (understandably).
I don't think greygardener was implying that it was about money because the guy was Jewish. It just seems like an important distinction to make. Had the owner been black, it would have created an entirely different dynamic. -
The building is 876 Lincoln Pl.
Also: I didn't assume that it was about money because he was jewish. To the extent that I assumed it was about high rents, it's because my girlfriend is white. I just wanted to give the details of the situation, and I feel like race and social group are relevant here. I don't in fact, even know for sure that it WAS about money. He may have told everyone who walked by. I just said the my girlfriend felt as if her being white MAY have affected her being told about the building, which I do not think is a crazy thought.
I know that isn't necessarily what was going on, but let's be honest: young, relatively affluent, and often white people are moving into this neighborhood and driving up the cost of housing. The rent around here is not just rising all by its lonesome. And while I'm sure the people who have lived here for years are happy not to have as much crime as they once did a) it isn't as if the influx of white people is solely responsible for the lower crime-rate. If anything, the influx is probably DUE to the lower crime-rate b) I think that many people have mixed feelings about all the changes taking place here, not least because of the higher cost of housing.
Last in my lengthy post: "Hipsters" may be driving up the rent, but they are certainly not the only people capable of paying it. Black CH residents and not just "white park slope people" can certainly pay their rent. -
Looks like there are some complaints from the existing tenants (see link below from DOB) but there are no applications open to alter building

White or young or affluent people are not soley responsible for rising rents, either. That's been a fact of *everyone's* life, all over the city for 5 or more years, now!
