Subject: new building on Underhill & St. John's

Anyone know what is happening to the old laundry on the corner of St. JOhns & Underhill? I knwo he has a permit to build 9 stories ( no one seems to know how he got that wihtout a hearing or notice to the neighbors) but today they are putting up scaffolding and the workers wont tell us if they are keeping the old strcuture or demolishing .

  • i figured it would be condos, but i'm sad it's going to be so tall.

i wish i'd moved here a long time ago. such a great neighborhood, but i'm afraid it's going to be gentrified to death soon. i'm dreading that first starbucks, but i'll bet there will be one in one of these new buildings.

    sigh.
  • I can't wait 'til Starbucks angst is no longer the cool thing.

Who cares if/when a Starbucks comes to town? Don't go there. I'm not a fan of 99cent stores, but I'm not going to get all bent out of shape if one opens up within a 6 block radius of my home and I'm not going to see it as the herald of Those With Sensibilities That Offend My Sensibilities, either.
  • you're lucky if you haven't lived in any neighborhoods that have been gentrified out of existence. obviously that's not starbucks' fault, but they're a good shorthand for the influx of chain stores, etc. that can really ruin the character of neighborhoods.
