need a special cake...good bakery in the area?
OK, question...
Heading to my in-laws this weekend and need a special b-day cake for my French mom-in-law
Looking for something we might find at a patisserie. Not photo slab cakes. Not "Cake Man's" red velvet cakes (too sweet).
Something in the hazelnut line, perhaps fruit...more of a European style.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Try Paris.. 9th street bet 5th and 6th... your French relatives will be getting a cake from real French people.
This place was shuttered for a while .. let's not go in to that story again!.. but I passed by today and sign said they open tommorrow..7/25 -
i've heard very good things about Trois Pommes Patisserie on 5th & carroll. owner is former pastry chef of Union Square Cafe and trained at the French Culinary Institute, according to her bio. bet you'll find something to satisfy your in-laws' tastes
-

My stepdad got my mom's 50th birthday cake from 2 Little Red Hens on 8th Avenue. It was delicious and it looked beautiful. They also have a yummy Key Lime tart.
-
8th And?
-
it's around 11th or 12th St...but I thought I heard they changed their name and/or ownership recently.
Again....hungry....fuckers!!!!! -

Flexi, cover your eyes!
The cake they made for my mom was some kind of buttercream concoction, really good. It was decorated with sunflowers all over, it was gorgeous. They're a bit pricey but I think the cakes are worth it. -
sweet melissa on 7th/1st street--- also on 9th street and 5th (i think) is patisserie (but that might be the same place that was described above)...
-
Yes.. same place.... and recommending it!

I had a piece of cake from Sweet Melissa a couple months after they opened. A friend bought it and had some left over, I can't remember what kind it was but it was practically flavorless. Someone bought me a chocolate mousse thing about a month ago and that was good. I wasn't very impressed overall though, especially considering their prices.

Subject: cakes
someone told me that the former little red hens uses boxed mixes for their cakes. which may be true, i've always found them tasty but dry.
i once got a pie from parco on 7th and it was like doused in butter. i mean in a good way. a french way. de-licious.
but THE BEST cakes in the city come from baked in red hook. seriously. moist, not too sweet, come in flavors you don't normally see. check out their website. -
The chocolate Opera cake from Cousin John's (7th + Berkley) is amazing.
-
in red hook--- baked (on van brunt street)---- sooooo good!
and the coffee there is excellent! -
As of this evening Paris is open.. 9th street between 4th and 5th ave.

Thanks to all!

We waltzed over to Lady Bird yesterday and picked out a lemon cake with rasberry butter cream filling and frosting. You can customize from their stock menu of cakes, fillings and frostings.
They were very nice. We missed the "fancy custom cake" menu by a day (they need 3 days for such orders).
Will let folks know how it turns out. -
Cake was a success with mom this weekend. Very nice looking presentation and even better tasting.

Not too sweet, not overly "butter-creamy."
Small cake, with our choice of filling, frosting, decoration (beautiful flowers) and writing a reasonable $26.
Next time, we'll be trying the hazelnut or almond cake specials...just with more notice.
THANKS to all for the recommendations
