Angus and Fig (Cookie) - Happy at Home at Last!
UPDATE ON THIS POST: Angus and Cookie have both found their new homes!
-------------------------------------------------------------
FORMER UPDATE: Cookie has been adopted. Angus still needs a home (or just someone who wants to come and scratch his head for a while). Scroll down for pictures and updates!
-------------------------------------------------------------
We found Angus and Cookie among the feral cats after the successful TNR program run by Slope Street Cats which Moria mentions. But Angus and Cookie are not feral - they are friendly and incredibly loving, and they are looking for a good home. We have four cats of our own and cannot take another. They are available for adoption, or for fostering. Until then they will be in our basement.
The big boy, Angus (named for the AC/DC guitarist because he rocks - and he had big "rocks" before he was neutered) is mostly gray, a domestic short-hair, though he has some slight stripes on his side. Also, his tummy is a lighter gray with polka dots! He is very sweet, and meows when he wants attention or food, and he’s very clean. He's one of those cats that will stick to your ankles, affectionately rubbing against you until you scritch his head. Then he closes his eyes, completely contented. Right now he's trying to pack some pounds back on, after being hungry on the streets. He has a badly infected tail because of puncture wounds (bites) so he is on antibiotics.
The smaller boy is Cookie (so named because he's black and white, like the eponymous pastry), also a domestic short-hair but with slightly longer hair. He's an affectionate lap cat and such a sweetie-pie. When you scratch his chin he purrs and purrs... And then he rolls over for a belly-rub. After being neutered he wasn't feeling well so we had to take him to the hospital. He has a blood parasite which is easily treated so we expect him to make a full recovery. The illness rarely reoccurs, though he may be a carrier for life. It is not communicable. We expect him to leave the hospital in a few days.
Because they were trapped as part of a TNR program the ASPCA clipped an ear on each one when they were spayed - it'll forever be a badge of what they went through. They both know how to use a litterbox and both are feline leukemia and feline AIDs negative. Neither cat is feral - they are pretty obviously discarded pets, and so grateful for affection (and food!). The folks at the vet say that Cookie is being a real trooper and a sweetheart, and we know that Angus is very loving. While at the vets they got along very well (snuggling together for a nap on the exam table). When Cookie is back from the vet's we'll see how they get along when everyone's feeling 100% - they make a perfect odd couple. I suspect that they'll be true brothers-in-arms after being tossed out and meeting up in Moria's yard.
I hope you can help us find a good, safe, loving forever-home for these guys. They really do deserve it!

Subject: Pictures of Angus
Here are some pictures of Angus. This evening we gave him a toy, a little puff-ball, and he kept tossing it up into the air and then leaping after it! Here are the pictures:
Meow!
Get this collar offa me, please?
Reaching for a toy.
Polka dotted tummy!
More pictures (sans e-collar) plus pictures of Cookie coming soon!
These cats really need a good home, soon. Please PM me, let me know if you'd like to meet them. They are so sweet... -
Violet, that belly couldn't be any cuter! He looks like such a sweet boy, I still don't understand how people can just toss them out. I have a flyer up at work for my fosters but I have another little one underneath. It lets people know they can contact me if they're interested in other cats for adoption. I will keep these lucky kitties in mind, good luck with them and you're a wonderful person!
-
I can vouch for Violet & her wonderful kitty rescues. my Ifa was one of hers and has remained a loving, snuggly kitty. I hope these kitties find loving homes soon -- but I know that in the meantime they're being well cared for!

Subject: New Pictures!
Thank you, alafairnadia and caseopele. You guys are really kind.
Here are some new pictures!
Cookie is a real lap-cat, he loves being pet and scratched and he purrs and purrs. He can get very floppy on your lap, just a puddle of love.
Angus loves just hanging out. He comes right up to you and sits close, hoping you'll scratch his head.
I think that they're both pretty young because when I let them out of the cage they run around and play, with lots of energy. Then they settle down to nap. Here they are in a quiet moment. You can see what a big guy Angus is.
They're both really sweet, loving kitties. I have no idea why their former owners would have discarded them. Despite the trauma of what they went through on the streets, and then getting trapped and their left ears clipped, they are so open and trusting and social... If you'd like to come visit them some evening (or talk about fostering or even adopting them!) please PM me. -
Subject: Update
Cookie has fully recovered and is very playful and energetic. I call him Kooky Cookie. When you toss him a cat toy he leaps around with it. He plays on a little twin bed and rolls around trying to "catch" the toy so much that he falls right off the bed. It is really funny.
Angus seems a bit calmer, especially in comparison. He is independent and solid. He's coming to understand that he will not go hungry, and is filling out nicely. His specialty is tossing a cat toy up into the air and then catching it.
Both cats are ready to find a forever-home, and someone to love and play with. Please PM me or post if you are interested, or if you know someone who might be. Or, if you'd like to come and play with them! -
Subject: Update
Cookie is a bundle of playful fun, now. He loves wrestling with toys, or chasing a laser pointer dot up the wall. He is easy going and loveable and just a cute, funny kitty cat. He's looking for someone who'll play with him a lot, and pet him when he tires out. He likes a sunny windowsill for a nap.
Angus is the strong, silent type. He likes to chase after cat toys, but we haven't figured out how to get him to fetch and bring the toy back. We think that someone was abusive to him before they abandoned him; once we snapped our fingers at him and he cowered, and sometimes he seems unsure when we go to pet him. But he loves being around people - he follows people from room to room and sits close - and is getting more trusting. (Plus, the fur on his tail is starting to grow in a little - yay!)
Both cats really such good boys. They get along together fine. They're clean and sweet and really want to be loved. I'll try to post new photos soon. We really, really need to find a home for these guys. If anyone would like a flyer, please PM me and I'll email you a Word document of a flyer. If anyone knows responsible, stable, loving, and understanding folks who are looking to add some love and joy to their lives, please PM me or post. Both of these kitty cats really deserve to be a part of a happy family... If you have any suggestions at all, please let me know? Thank you. -
Subject: Angus desperate for a new home (Cookie found one!)
A co-worker of mine took Cookie home! He's called Fig now, and he's learning how to stay out of the way of my co-worker's other cat, Nellie. My co-worker says that Fig is a real joy, very affectionate and funny and playful, and she's so glad that he's a part of her family now.
Angus is still in our basement, hoping he will be as lucky and find someone to appreciate and care for him. He wants a stable, loving, forever home and promises to be a loyal companion in return. He's not as playful as Cookie (Fig), but he does like to chase toys (or balled-up bits of paper) that are thrown. And he's really coming out of his shell after his hard time on the streets. He's become much more affectionate and loving as he relaxes and comes to trust that he's safe. He will follow you from room to room, just to hang out. He doesn't want to sit on your lap, but does want to lean against you. And he'll duck his head under your hand for petting. And then he'll purr to show that he's happy, letting his soft heart show through his tough exterior.
Angus really is a good boy. If you know anyone who is patient and loving and would give Angus the care and kindness that he deserves, please PM me or post? I'll post more pictures soon. -
Yeah for Cookie!!
I hope Angus gets a good home too! That leopard belly is really too damn cute. -
Subject: new pictures
Here are some new pictures of Angus (and this doesn't even show off his stripes and polka dots - someone mistook him for a bengal!).
I was trying to take pictures but he kept walking towards me wanting to be pet
Mmm... Pettings
He has a noble profile
Playing with the camera cord
What a handsome boy!

Please PM me or post if you'd like to meet him, or would like a flyer to post, or if you know anyone who wants a loving companion - that's Angus! -
Subject: Rakish Rescued Cat Craves Companionship!
Well, over the weekend I was down in the basement with Angus and had my laptop computer on my lap and he suddenly decided that he wanted to be a lap-cat after all! I pet him a little but then pushed him away (three times) because I had to get back to work. Angus climbed onto the back of the sofa, right behind me, and purred in my ear until he fell asleep. He's become a real sweetheart. We joke that someone must've taught him to heel because of the way he'll stick to your ankles (especially if he knows you're getting his dinner!). If he's on the other side of the room and you pat the seat next to you he'll run over, loping on those big long legs, and meow as he jumps up to sit right beside you. Angus is still looking for a home (or at least someone who'd like to visit and scratch his head and throw balls for him to run after). -
I love that heavy-lidded kitty luuuv look! They remind me of Pepe LePew when they're like that. He looks like a total sweetie.

Subject: Update
Angus just may have found the family for him... A very nice, responsible, accepting couple visited him, and then we (the humans) visited the couple's home, and an adoption application was filled out and approved... Now we are waiting to hear back from the couple about when Angus should come to his new home (the date is complicated by the fact that we want Angus's tail to be 100% healed and to get healed he needs antibiotics and when taking antibiotics he gets sick so we want to get him healed and off of the antibiotics before he goes to his new home). The point is, although things are looking up for him, could we please keep this stickied until Angus is happily at his new home?
On Sunday I was visiting Angus in the basement and I was on my back on the sofa and he sat on my tummy purring until he fell asleep. He still nips at you if he doesn't like what you're doing, but not hard and not with any malicious intent. It's just his way of saying "cut it out!". He also meows quite a lot. And still loves to chase toy mice around. He's such a good boy! -
Yay, Angus! He's so handsome ...I love the picture with the chord :-)
-
Will do on keeping it sticky -- but my fingers are crossed that this works out, of course!

Subject: Angus
The couple who wants to adopt Angus are not very communicative. The guy says he really wants Angus, but then fails to return calls, and even though he knows that Angus's tail is still infected he's never asked "How's he doing?". But then he says that Angus is the cat for them (the guy's co-worker thinks that he knew Angus when Angus was younger - used to feed a stray cat just like him - so I think they think it was fated to be). And they seem like such nice, accepting people... Just not very eager or responsive (which makes me worry that they wouldn't be responsive if Angus lived with them and wasn't feeling well, or something). But they seem responsible and passed the background check...
Angus was supposed to go to his new home this weekend but a relative came to visit the couple and they thought it might be best if Angus was just with the two of them when he was introduced to his new home (which I totally agree with). But then the guy never called back when he said he would... I'm so confused.
Meanwhile, after two weeks on antibiotics and then three days off, Angus is back on with warm compresses for the cellulitis in his tail. (If anyone has any advice about cellulitis, let me know?) He is playful and vocal and demonstrative; if he wants you to pet him he'll gently grab your hand with his teeth, and if you go to leave but he wants you to stay he'll jump and try to wrap his arms around your legs. He's started to really enjoy laying on top of me, and loves having his face scratched. And when you scratch the base of his tail he lifts his rump up. He's such an interesting, unique, sweetheart... I really hope this couple who are interested come through... But could we please keep this sticky for a while longer? -
Of course! We just take off stickies after two weeks with no updates -- so just be sure to check in every couple of weeks when you want the sticky to stay up.
I hope this works out for Angus... -
Violet, I would go with your gut. If they are unresponsive and have not even inquired about the tail, they may not be the best parents. I do hope he finds a good forever home. After all this, he deserves it!
-
I've gotta agree. My spidey sense is telling me it might not work out in the long run. You have their soon-to-be cat and they don't call you back? :?
It was important for me, when I adopted out my last feral kitty, to check up on her new family in the months that ensued and make sure she was adjusting and making a connection. This will obviously not be guaranteed with this couple.
Another thing to note is that Angus and his tail need dutiful attention and if these people will flake on a simple call back, then they might flake on taking care on Angus. -
Thank you darla and Mamacita,
I think you're right. The cell phone messages stored on the guy's phone and filling up the memory finally got played so that I could leave a message, which I did. I also sent an email, just in case. No response. I hope they are okay...
But I guess they are not the family for Angus. So we are starting the search anew. Please put the word out - if anyone is looking for a unique, sweet, smart new family member, Angus is the guy!
We've discovered (while putting hot compresses on his tail) that he loves to drink hot water. Weird! He's a good boy. We trimmed his nails and he was really good about it. Such a good boy... He deserves a family who will love him and want him and care for him. -
And make him tea!
Kidding! Hope you find a great place for Angus. -
Right - catnip tea! Actually, Angus doesn't care about catnip. But he loves the hot water. Once the water was too hot (for the hot compresses on the tail) and he lapped a sip up and then squeaked a little and took a step back, paused for a few moments, and then took a smaller sip until his tongue got used to the heat.
I have to say, he's a very interesting boy. We were busy with something and not paying attention to him so he came up to us and patted our legs with his front paw. Hey! Lookit me? Play with me? then he bounded away.
He's such a good boy. His tail infection flared up again, so he has to go back to the vet. But he's so good natured and sweet and interesting. Really unique. A vet tech who picked him up and held him said it was just like holding a child - he's big and lanky with elbows poking out and the tech's description is exactly right. He's like a child. Smart like that, too. For the first time I vaccumed the area where he's staying - scary loud noises - and he just sat and watched. Very brave.
And he's still looking for a home. If anyone is interested please PM me or post... -
Gosh, he sounds like my Penny. He does that all the time. *pat* *pat* "Mommy, pay attention to me!!!" Very smart boy. So smart, that one time he faked a heat stroke (the repeated meows and pats should have tipped me off) in order to get me to turn on the air conditioner.
My boy likes soy milk, which I don't let him have because the sugar is bad for his teeth, and hot wheat cereal. -
Subject: still looking for a home
Angus is still hoping for a home... We've had a few people express interest but no forever-home.
Angus now sometimes drinks from the toilet, like a dog!
He's really funny - if you play with him and then get up to go, but he's not done playing, he'll stand on his hind legs and hug your legs with his arms.
He's such a good boy... -
Must... not... adopt...
Have... two... kitties... already...
I'm amazed no one has RUN OUT to adopt this kitty already. It's all I can do to keep myself from doing it myself. But two is all I can handle financially and timewise. -
Last weekend my sister and I went to cut Fig's nails at his adoptive mommy's home. He was a little shy at first, but warmed up when we played with him with his toys. And he was quite good about having his nails trimmed. We also trimmed the other cat in the home's nails. Nellie was much less cooperative - she hissed and clawed and bit and growled and flung herself around... My sister ended up with a scratch on her cheek (blood actually dripped onto the bed, where we were holding Nellie firm under a towel) and I had puncture wounds on my thumb (which turned red and swelled up and hurt for a few days). But after all was said and done, Nellie's nails were trimmed - her first time ever (in 12 years) of having her nails trimmed.
And we really wanted her nails trimmed because she still attacks Fig if he ventures out of the two front rooms. We're giving the adoptive mom suggestions about how to encourage Nellie to get along with Fig, and there have been a few instances where Nellie comes into the front room and just sits for 20 or 30 minutes. So I think that with time and some effort things will get better. Fig's adoptive mom loves him a lot, but we know how stressful it is when kitties don't get along...
Meanwhile, Angus met a very nice couple last night. They sound interested in having Angus join their family. They spent over an hour playing with him in the basement, they have experience with cats who need care (Angus is still on antibiotics), they are warm and accepting and they seem to really like Angus. I really hope that the couple will give Angus a home. I've got such a good feeling about them... So I will be sure to post an update the moment we know for sure. That should be within days...
In the meantime, here are some pictures of Fig in his new home. He's such a sweetie-pie:
-
great job, violet! i hope in time fig and nellie will work it out.
angus is so damn handsome, i can't believe he hasn't found a home yet. fingers crossed that these people take him -
Fig! So cute.

Glad to hear you've got a good possibility for that sweet hunk o' cat Angus, but I'll re-sticky this just in case. -
We took Angus over to his new home yesterday. He explored a little bit, but then hid under the bed. We got this update from his new family today:
Angus is fine - he had a good night. Stayed under the bed for most of the evening - came out for a little play but went back under. Later, when we went to bed, he came into the bedroom and curled up on the blanket on the shelves at the end of our bed and stayed there for most of the night - except for his 5am playtime with his toys!
He ate last night and am sure he is eating again during the day, today - he is still waiting 'til we are out of the kitchen to eat, though. No problem re the tablet (he took it fine) and he happily is using his litter box. He is fine.
Thanks again for dropping him off yesterday and all the food etc - very kind.
Will email you Friday or Saturday and let you know how he is progressing - but am sure he will be running the apt by then!
I miss Angus terribly, but I think that he's found a good, warm, caring, loving forever-home. Yay! Thank you all for all of your support and help. -
yay, Angus and Violet!
It sounds like he's settling in nicely. I'd miss him too - he looks like a sweetie -
YAY!
Howdy, Stranger!
