clothing donations

I know that there is a clothing drop box on the corner of St. John's and Washington but is there another place to donate a couple bags of clothes...church or the like?

Comments

  • I've dropped off a lot of clothes at the Goodwill store in Livingston St, downtown.
  • FYI: The one on St Johns and Washington is not run by a non-profit. It's a business that collects unwanted clothing and resells it.

If you want to donate stuff, it would be good to find a drop box run by a legitimate organization like the Salvation Army instead of using that box on Washington.
  • Thanks but is there anyplace in the neighborhood b/c we have a lot of stuff. I'll be sure to not drop it in the box on St. John's.
  • If you have a lot of stuff, I think you can call the Salvation Army to schedule a pickup. They will send a truck over to get pick up the stuff. I haven't done it recently but I know they used to do this.
  • Pickup Salvation Army: 718 622 4705

    St Mary's church: 7185296070
  • Also, there is a Goodwill or Salvation Army on Flatbush just off of Bergen.
  • If you have an business attire you can donate it to Dress for Success.

While I was near the Green Market in Union Square i was told that they are now starting a Material Monday here is a little blurb about it from cenyc.org:
"CENYC's Office of Recycling Outreach and Education encourages you to bring your unwanted textile materials to the Union Square Greenmarket (17th Street and Park Ave) Mondays, 8 AM - 6 PM through August 27th.

Bring Textiles such as: Clothing, Hats, Coats, Towels, Bedding, Jackets, & Shoes. Goodwill Industries will provide receipts upon request for those who wish to use their donation as a tax deductible contribution.

Clothing and Household Linens are Reusable and Recyclable. 5.7% of NYC's residential waste is textiles yet they are 100% Recyclable!"
  • Good to know about those donation bins. Thought they were non-profit... guess again. Who do they sell the used clothing to? Strange.

I have this bookbag I just got from a concert this weekend (Rock the Bells). Well, I don't need it and it's actually nice. Did anyone see signs in the subway about donating bookbags for kids? Any suggestions? School is near, thought it would be good to donate.
  • Dress for Success and Career Gear are non-profts. Dress for Success accepts donations for business clothes for women and Career Gear accepts donations for business clothes for men. Here are their websites:

    www.dressforsuccess.org
    www.careergear.org

The clothes aren't sold. They get referrals from social service agencies (usually workforce development agencies) for low-income men or women who have interviews lined up and need the clothing for it. The women also receive make-up, if it is available. Both Dress for Success and Career Gear offer other services to low-income adults to continue nurturing them into successful careers.

I used to work for an organization and referred clients to both organizations. They do fantastic work.
  • most of those boxes are for-profits. they sell the clothes in bulk to larger used clothing stores.

there's a goodwill on fulton in bed-sty, and they take donations.

and there are salvation army's in clinton hill (on quincy), on atlantic near flatbush, on flatbush near the bergen tile center, and on bedford in williamsburg.

i'm sure there are more. (yes, i buy all my clothes there. nothing beats a 95 cent prada dress)
