What gyms are near us?

There's an Eastern Athletic on Eastern Parkway, down by the Museum area, but I think they charge an arm and a leg for membership.
-
There's also the Crunch/Fort Greene Gym on Flatbush near the 7th Avenue Q stop.
-
I signed up at the Bedford/Monroe YMCA... my legs are killing me

$35/mo... why the hell not??? -
I joined the Y on 9th St in Park Slope recently and I'm loving it. I get a discount through the Freelancer's Union, so I only pay $44/mo.

So I am really frustrated after calling to find info about gym memberships. Crunch, Eastern Athletic and Slope Health and Fitness all refuse to give out membership prices by phone, not even a range of options or anything. It’s kept “confidential.†You have to make an appointment and agree to listen to their spiel in person.
How obnoxious! The receptionist at Crunch said she herself isn’t even allowed to know the membership prices and the membership guy she got on the phone for me said the process was “like buying a car.†That’s crazy, why on earth would I want to go through that kind of ordeal. That implies they work on commission and everyone pays different amounts based on their ability to negotiate.
These gyms actually posted rates on their website:

wow incredible rates and a pool! Like Cool the Kid, I think I’m going to join here. -
That's about every single gym in New York. When I first started looking at gyms three years ago, I went to about six different ones in Manhattan and had the same experience with all but one. They wouldn't give a price but instead had to be shuttled into an office where you would get the deal given out by the gym manager. The only exception was Clay which, when I asked, slid a drink list-looking piece of cardboard across the table... and it was $400/month.
Best thing you can do is comparison shop and try to use the information you gain to try to get a better deal. -
If you go on the Crunch website you can print out a free guest pass. They ask you for your phone number and then call you to give you the sales pitch, but when you actually go to work out they barely smile at you. Then, if you like it, you can choose to take their annoying call asking if you want to join. If you didn't like it - at least you didn't waste your time in some office or going on a stupid tour. I joined Eastern Athletic because I like paying too much. (Nah - not really, it just happens to be most convenient.) I like it. Rarely crowded but way too much $$$.

I attempted, in person, to get rates at Crunch several months ago and they would not give me ANY information. They said I had to fill out a form to even find out how much the monthly rate would run me, and the form requested an awful lot of personal information (drivers license number? cell phone number? I'm NOT giving that away to find out about the cost of an option service I might want to enrolll in). The cincher was that the form required me to sign agreement to the terms and conditions of their membership. When I pointed out (aghast) that they had not even DISCLOSED the potential terms and conditions at this point, they told me that the lil ole signature didn't mean anything and it was just paperwork I should sign. I countered with "well, if it doesn't mean anything, why don't we just skip it and you tell me how much per month a no-contract membership costs". They refused, they insisted they needed my drivers license number and signature to tell me how much their monthly rate would be, and I walked out. I've heard AWFUL stories about bank account rape by gyms, and there's no way I'm dealing with a company that creepy. So, now I save the gazillion dollars and exorbitant "initiation fee" and just run, all by myself (well, with my dog), and without having to come into contact with other people's crotch sweat and obnoxious, untrained staff.
-
I'm telling you, if you have a bike join the Y. It's awesome, I go almost every day.
-
so how much IS eastern athletic? i pay $84/month at crunch. gym membership reps are among the slipperiest of sales reps.
-
I went by Crunch recently to inquire about their rates, and to join for one gym only it's $89/month, and $94/month for access to all of their gyms. The rest of August is free and the initiation fee equals the day of the month (i.e. $15 today). It is awfully convenient for me but I think a bit too expensive for what it is. They were very friendly and pretty forthcoming though, although stingy with passes.
-
Eastern Athletic is about $100 per month. Right now they're having a special - 90% off initiation fee and four free personal training sessions. The personal trainers are never actually available though so it's pretty worthless. If you sign up on a month by month basis you can later switch to a year plan and avoid paying about $250 extra in fees. (It took me about 1/2 hour to get them to tell me that.) If the Y was convenient I would go there. Heck, if the weather was always good - I wouldn't join a gym at all.

Subject: eastern athletic
Hmmm... when I first looked into Eastern Athletic about 6mos. ago it was somewhere between $80-90/mo (as long as you pay in a big chunk, and agree to sign up for a year). BUT I only pay about $67/mo there because I get a big discount through the teachers' union (I'm sure they have other union discounts too), and I know they have corporate discounts available too (J.P. Morgan and a ton of other places I can't remember) - so that may be worth checking out for some folks. -
Crunch is about 149 down and 94 dollars a month for a month to month deal. For a contract, it is 16 down and 89 a month. Is this the going rate here? I've never paid over forty dollars for the gym.
What is the gym on 7th or 5th ave next to the realtor? -
My family just joined The Y ...Y not....
-
You could also join NYC recreational centers. $75 a year. For real. A year. The closest one around here is the St. Johns Rec center near Albany Ave. Across from the big project building. They have an olymipic size swimming pool, wieght room , basketball courts, and cardio room. The major downside is the really bad hours. You can check nyc.gov....go to recreational centers. Anyway....if you join one you can go to any of the 25 centers in New York. Alot of the gyms in manhattan are much nicer....and for $75 A YEAR. ..Its unbeatable. Though certainly not hip.
-
what about yoga? does anyone have a rec? i don't want to do bikram (flatbush), but i'm afraid of park slope yoga. no good reason. irrational fear of the slope, i guess. i'm looking for a really challenging vinyasa or ashtanga class.
i did crunch in manhattan and in LA. the passport/use any gym option was really good for me and also, gave me a free steam room/shower facility uptown. which was good for awhile.
the customer service sucks though, and you have to be really aggressive to get anywhere. -
Check the schedule at the Flatbush/7th Crunch. Maybe it's just because I've never gotten into yoga, but it seems like they have a ton of yoga classes (as opposed to other group work-out classes).
I would prefer to join a YMCA, but Crunch is close enough to my apt that I'll go even when it's cold out, which is what really matters for me. Hopefully they do something good with the new space they bought... -
There are a ton of yoga classes at the Park Slope Crunch, but I have yet to take one with an even halfway-decent teacher (imho).
There's a small yoga place on St. Marks near Washington. -
ooooh. that sounds good. st marks near washington? do you know if they have ashtanga? or what theyre called? I'll go find them....
thank you!!!!!! -
Subject: Shambhala Yoga
It's Shambhala Yoga - and they are awesome: http://www.shambhalayogadance.com/
Some Ahstanga, a lot of Vinyasa, and some other. I highly recommend it. -

I've gone to both Crunch on Flatbush and have gone to Body Reserve on 5th Avenue and both places gave me their rates over the phone.
