but I can't get my IE browser to pull up a web page. TW says my browser isn't recognizing something or the other.

Many thanks!!!!

We have been having something like that happen, too. It's intermittant, even after we did TW's automated self-diagnostic thingey and getting a new splitter as suggested. And when it does work, it's often sloooooow :x .
  • Livetotravel, what have you tried so far? When I had TW this is what I would do anytime I had a problem. Unplug the modem for about 20-30 seconds with the computer on, plug it back in and let it reset itself. If that doesn't work, shut your computer off, then unplug the modem for 20-30 seconds. Plug it back in and restart your computer.

What does it say in the status bar of IE when you try to get online? And what is the message you get (if any), does it say you're not connected or that it can't display the webpage? I just helped a friend with TW problems a couple weeks ago so it's fresh in my memory.
  • Subject: Time-Warner

The past few days I've been having connection problems too. Getting knocked off my connection; getting messages that Windows encountered a problem and has to close; etc.
Last night at 7;45 I phoned T-W to see if there was a system problem. Their recording said, Leave your phone, we'll call you back in "5-8 minutes" - Well, they did not!
Back in early '06 I had problems with my connection for 3 months and had to replace everything - router, modem, splitter, etc. and also paid a tech to diagnose the problem. At the end, miraculously, TW admitted it had been their problem all along and gave me a few months' free service.
I'd suggest everyone phone them and complain.
  • caseopele - thanks, I'll try that tonight when I get home.

slope4 - I got the same damn bullshit from T-W - tech says he'll call back in 2-3 minutes - well, it was hasta la vista baby - never heard from him/them again.
  • I've been having problems with my internet connection through TWC recently, also. I have never had problems before the last month or so, and in that time my internet has been out 2 or 3 nights per week. Sometimes it is out for a few hours, sometimes for a full day.

I have called TWC and all I get are instrustions to unplug, wait, plug back in. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I was starting to think it might be my router, but is it possible that there's a problem with the system in the neighborhood?

A friend (also in PS) was complaining about connection problem this week with wireless, but his roommate had no problem with the cable-connected internet service. I don't know enough about how it all works to know if it is TWC's fault, but I have had enough bad experiences with their crappy service to assume they are to blame.
  • Sometimes I had to reset the router too, maybe give that a shot?
  • Time Warner tech support drives me nuts. Their favored process seems to be this:

    1) Reset/Unplug Modem. You would never think of this on your own.
    2) Say connection is fine.
    3) Attempt to find out enough about your system so that something else can be blamed for the problem. Hello, router.
    4) Realize complaints from certain areas are piling up and finally fix the problem with the network without any updates or announcements - that is, admit no guilt. 4-10 days.

It's frustrating, but hang loose. I'm guessing things will be fine shortly.
  • I hope you're right. I don't have a router, just a direct cable connection to modem to computer and only 1 computer involved.
  • Subject: T-W?

    I've got an equipment question?
My primary wireless account seems to connect but then lose connectivity; then, when I go in again, the machine has gone to another wireless network (unencrypted) which seems to work fine for a while.
This seems to be to possibly be a problem with my router but if that other network is connected to another ISP besides TW, would that make a difference?
My tech is leaving for a month's vacation so I can't resolve this problem unless I figure it out myself/

I get a can't display web page alert - it seems to just time out
  • Does it say anything in the status bar at the bottom when it's trying to connect? The problem my friend had was some dsn error that you could only see in the status bar. I used a program called Dial A Fix to fix the problem.

Can you use AIM? If you want help with that program you can IM me, my screen name is my user name. Or post back here and I'll help.

    Things to try:

Is email working? How about file sharing services, iTunes or anything else other that a browser that connects to the net. If these are working, your connection is fine.

Try an alternative browser. You have Firefox installed? If not, you need to. If your email is working, ask someone to send you the installer.

How is your computer security set up? Some firewall apps have an extreme security measure called "stealth mode". If this is enabled, all ping packets sent to your connection will just dissapear, making it highly secure. Unfortunately, this can also screw up page requests to your ISP (it did with me). Turn off all your security and try again. If it works, turn on the firewall settings one at a time.
  • start...run...type command into the dialog, bring up command window, type the following:
    ipconfig /all
    -- what do you see?

Well your security question made me think that maybe a virus got through - I reinstalled McAfee and ran scans and sure enough that was the cause - McAfee eliminated the virus and I'm back on.

Thanks to everyone for all your great suggestions!
