upstate hiking

Someone had posted about finding people and places to hike upstate. Up around Lake Placid ,Keene area there are all kinds of B&Bs while being right in the middle of the 46 peaks of the adirondack mountains. There are stores with maps and gear and trailheads everywhere. Some a day hikes some are more. If you stay in a small town like Keene in a B&B or hostel you run a great chance of hooking up with other hikers or just bring one buddy..there are trails for all levels and time frames. Take I-87 north to exit 30..you are there. :D

  • I vote for the New Paltz area, especially if you want to try rock climbing. Mohonk is beautiful and has lots of great trails.
  • Ah, I'm gong to Mohonk this Thursday.
  • I'm a big fan of Mohonk. Opinions on the Catskills State Park?
  • I am a big fan of Minnewaska and the Gunks in new paltz. Trouble with mohonk is lately you have to pay to actually hike /walk around the mountain house which STINKS. it's gotten too hard to find free ways to the top of the mountain. grrr.

    Re Catskills:

I am a HUGE big fan of Catskill mountains, namely Hunter Mtn. hike to the fire tower. it is a rewarding, tough hike on the top of a 4000' mtn. If you're a camper, go to Devil's Tombstone Campground. I think it's closed for the season, but next year, camp there. Not sure of the names of other kinds of lodging but there are other sleeping options.

Not far from Hunter is Kaaterskill falls --a 2-tiered lovely waterfall, highest in the state. It's really nice, and is not as long of a hike, and a bit tricky if it's muddy.

Bear Mountain is nice too if you dont have a lot of time. It's quite a bit closer to the city that the above.
  • Went this weekend to Sloatsburg, the red trail up to pine meadow lake which is pretty moderate hike and lovely this time of the year.
  • Also not so far: Cold Spring and Beacon
