St Johns block party - Saturday, August 4th!
so. last night on my way home from work, I ran into Mrs.Carnivore and ended up walking up St. Johns to Washington instead of my usual Park or Sterling. anyway, after leaving Mrs. C at Underhill, I ran into Mike, the president of the St. Johns block association and he asked me for a donation (sorry, Mike, if you're reading - I'm almost always incoherent 1-2 hours after I get out of work -- the joint sucks the life out of me) for the party this Saturday afternoon. yes, folks - they're going to be BBQing!!! didn't ask about the pony rides, though. anyway, Mike is going to be on the block, collecting donations, for the next couple evenings after work if you have a chance to go by. and, of course, show up at the party!

Very cool! Can non-St John's residents go? I mean, if said non-St John's resident pays up some money.
Could be the perfect thing on a hot (HOT) Saturday. -
I'm sure - I don't live on St. Johns and he told me to come so ...
-
Everyone is invited. No one will be turned away.

I'm not sure but, didn't they get shut down last year? -
I am totally into the block party! When does it start? St johns b/w wash + underhill??

yep. not sure when it starts - I'm thinking it's a brunch-time starter. noonish? -
why is it SO loud?!?!???? help!!!!! (all windows closed and i don't even live on that block---- everything is vibrating)
-
a picture fell off of our wall. it's not even that it's so loud, it's that it's all bass. when i was on the street it didn't even sound good! someone needs to teach em how to work an EQ. i like bass, but ya gotta balance that shit!
and vanilla, the speakers are right at the opening between our row of buildings and the row behind us on St. Johns -

I completely agree....It's MUCH too loud. Why do people think louder and bassier is better? This aint a dance club, it's a residential block party. And if you're gonna bump something, at least play records and songs, not this mixtape bullshit with dudes posing as hype-men screaming over it with lame blowhorns thrown in. Forgive the bitterness...just some venting from a hip hop head who's still upset with the fact that hip hop is dead.

What time does it end???

Subject: block party, huh?
I thought that block party meant lemonade stands, grandma's brownies, live music on the stoop, people hanging out...but THIS is ear-hurting 10 hour thunderstorm. -

alafairnadia, maybe you could tell your boy Mike that the sound levels were a little out of line Saturday afternoon. Whoever was in charge should've hired a real deejay with real records and an ear for music, rather than turning the mixtapes up to 10 to impress god knows who. -
It was loud, but I don't think it was out of line for a once-a-year party for the whole block. It started well after noon and was over before midnight on a Saturday. And everyone was invited. I stopped by and wasn't that into it, but many people obviously were. The block parties on my block when I was a kid seemed more oriented towards the younger kids. This one seemed like it was more for the 16-25 year-olds, so it's natural that it would go later.
It was a little odd how few people were actually at the party considering how many families live on that block. Mrs. C, alafairnadia and I were wondering whether it might be because of the oppressive heat yesterday. , -

maybe you would have thought it "out of line" if the speakers were situated outside your apt building like me, evan, and izisharp! i'm just saying, that dj on the mic was painfully loud regardless of all my windows shut and EARPLUGS. that's not cool for - what? - 10 hours.
i'm not expecting a silent or even quiet neighborhood. however, street noise in my apt. which is comparable to that of a show/club - out of line. -

it was odd b/c the loudness wasn't as apparent on st. johns proper. but I know coming into my building it was damned loud. confusing.
and hey - apparently mike's address, apartment # and phone # were posted all over the place this past week - feel free to track him down and let him know yourself that it was too loud. -
the music ended at 10pm (at least the super loud stuff) and i don't have a problem with a block party. the "music" just sounded like garbage. there was this noise, this insane bass thunder, that wasn't even part of music or anything. someone would be speaking and out of nowhere this ridiculous thunder would erupt. it happened often, and that's what really shook the walls. dunno, sounded perhaps like an effect on a sampler or mixer or something. i do think that the row of apartments on the west side of washington b/t sterling and st johns had it the worst simply because of the placement of the speakers and the way noise reverberates between the buildings.
in the end, it ended at 10 and i think that's perfect, but if you're having a block party and want everyone to have a good time, get a DJ! i don't know how many songs i heard get cut off in the middle, skipped to another song, then go back to the first song... and i'm not talking about mixing or scratching, just someone hitting the forward button.
i think the fact that so few people on the block were out enjoying the party, as carnivore mentioned, reflects how community oriented the party was. -
there was actually a great DJ around ... 5:45 pmish playing house music in the half of the party nearest washington. except for the annoying laser sounds (please, people, comprehend that bad radio dj tricks need not be repeated), I was kinda bouncing to his awesome track choices. but then I hit the half of the street nearest underhill and was treated to awfulness. so sad.

it was damn loud (bass) but overall i had fun -
the laser sound! yeah, that and the thunder sound i'm talking about suuuuuuuucked.
what time did the dj stop? cause when i was around earlier in the afternoon the music was good and the songs actually played all the way through. when i got back from dinner though it had gone downhill. -
not sure when he stopped - I got into a cab with the Carnivore clan and headed to Melody Lanes. but - when I was coming out of my building to when I was crossing the midway point btwn washington & underhill, that DJ was playing complete awesome house tracks. with, unfortunate, lasers. I stopped at the laundry & bodega so the trip took a few more than 3 minutes.

I'm SOOO against Gentrification, but I found myself thinking "I can't wait till the Gentrifiers get rid of this awful block party." The block was trashed, the music was too loud, and it felt more like a meatmarket/nightclub, than it did a block party. And honestly, most of the people enjoying the party didn't even live on the block.
-
There definitely should be a decibel limit on these godawful block parties. You can have a good time without the 747 jet blast.
Last year on Lincoln the jackholes parked the system in front of MY building and it was hell. What's wrong with enjoying reasonable music at a reasonable level? These block party systems are powerful enough to blast all of Prospect Park. THEY DON"T BELONG on NARROW STREETS in a RESIDENTIAL AREA.
A normal household stereo cranked up with a small sub woofer would be more appropriate.
Proponents always say they do the block parties for the kids but I only ever see teenage thugs and grownups getting drunk.
NOT COOL -
Jesus Christ, do we live in a geriatric center? How old are you people? A block party over here is not the same as a block party in Park Slope......live a little!
-
there actually are a lot of geriatrics that live in the neighborhood and on the block. think they were excited about the party?
and like i said, i dont have any problem with a block party, just make it sound good! -

Pshhhhh. Are you saying residents of Park Slope, or gentrified neighborhoods in general, are more respectful of their neighbors, have more refined taste in music and know how to throw a proper party? Or that the tenants of St. Johns are inherently loud, can't recognize a bad deejay when they hear one, have complete disregard for their neighbors and are on some braggadocia-B.S. by blasting their bass as loud as they can just for the heckuvit? Or both? Or am I just really old? -
I liked how trash bags were hanging on the fences, but all of the trash was in the streets. Nice.

Just another testament that real deejays are an endangered species. (And to a greater extent, that hip hop is no longer a byproduct of the streets (especially in New York) -- it's a reflection of horrible radio DJs and the rap-pop charts. But that's for another thread)

Subject: Complainers
some of these comments are so hypocritical same people on this blog beat down the neighborhood time after time. won't do a damn thing to help it but criticize it u can leave (most people cant wait until you do so) but u won't and your reply to this comment will be irrevelant because you feel offended but i always keep this in mind (and so many people in brooklyn do) this a place not for correction, help, improvement but some no life having bully behind the screen and keyboard (so very sad) go out there and enjoy life it's short for some. My non-complainers on this blog or should i say people making things happen, seeing things with open-mindness, keep laughing at them because i do when i get the time. -
Subject: another thing
the street did get cleaned up the next day i even saw mike cleaning up sunday afternoon and pay a complete stranger who helped sweep up the corner. who didn't see the hundreds of kids enjoy the spiderman bouncer for hours who saw about 500 people in brooklyn enjoy themselves without one negative incident. the dj sucked for sure, its not the block fault and if the music was better, bass, the eq, the loudness was at a level for the ones complaining on this blog guarantee you would have found something negative to talk about because thats what a few of you do(always). people of all ages especially the kids enjoyed free food and drinks all day with plenty of gifts you seldom find that. it was a once a year event and the majority loved it, that counts not the few that want things regulated and repressed for their own personal likings
Howdy, Stranger!
