Yellow Cabs +Sunset Park
Do yellow cabs grumble about taking passengers from Manhattan to Sunset Park? What is the best route from downtown Manhattan to around the Park and how much does it usually cost?
Also, does anyone have any info about whether there are Chinatown vans that go from SP to Flushing or Manhattan chinatown to SP?
Thanks.

Cab drivers do not grumble about coming to Sunset Park any more than they do about driving to Brooklyn in general--most are just fine with it. I regularly take a cab from 30th Street and 7th Avenue in the city to 41st and 7th in Sunset Park, and usually the driver takes either the Manhattan Bridge or the Brooklyn Bridge to the BQE, exiting the expressway at 39th Street in Brooklyn. That ride costs about $25 with tip. No clue about the vans.

Thanks for the reply, I wasn't sure if it was better to take the Brooklyn or Manhattan bridges or even the Brooklyn-Battery tunnel, which looks like it goes right from city hall area to South Brooklyn so it's probably an option too.
$25 is less expensive than I thought. -
Either of the bridges is usually fine (I probably come across the Manhattan more often), and the tunnel is probably a great option as well, though I have no personal cab experience with it....The tunnel does tend to have less traffic than the bridges, though, b/c of the toll.

I usually take the Manhattan bridge to Brooklyn too--it just seems quicker and almost always has less traffic.
I didn't know the tunnel had a toll, but I just checked the website and it's $4.50! I guess I won't be taking the tunnel then... -
I have had a few cab drivers sigh heavily when I say Sunset Park, and one suddenly had to go out of service. But that was at least two years ago, and I think it's more common to come here now. A lot of the cabs know this area because of the 4th Ave depot place. (I don't know what the technical term is.)
I usually asked for the Manhattan Bridge, but I'll also leave it up to the cab driver. It's easier to get onto the BQE from the Bkln Bridge, but the Manhattan saves some time in Manhattan. If there's traffic, the MB is a better bet. -
Subject: Cheapest Route
Since cabs charge for mileage, rather than time, the cheapest route is Manhattan bridge, down flatbush, to 4th ave and then to SP. This is fine at 2 AM or so, but may not be the best route when traffic is heavy.
Also, get in the cab and close the doors before telling the driver where you are going. If he grumbles, don't tip him well. -
I always tip cabbies well, unless they are really inappropriate or rude. It's a tough job that I appreciate them doing.
Actually, it's been a while since any of them have grumbled about coming to Brooklyn, maybe that slight fare increase has made it less of a burden for them.
I do always take the Manhattan bridge, it just seems faster/cheaper than the Brooklyn bridge, because of the latter's long on-ramp.
