Subject: Gardel's Four Seasons
When I had a garden I got most of my shrubs and annuals from Gardel's Garden in FG. He has good stock and he's real really cool guy.
Gardel's Four Seasons
97 South Portland Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11217

Also, it's worth the bus trip... Eagle provisions on 19th(?) street and 5th av usually has good annuals and herbs (and smoked port chops, yummm).
Anyone ever go to Brooklyn Terminal Market in Flatbush? I hear it's a zoo but you find everything you need. -
good suggestions - thanks!
-
you can always try Lowes or Home Depot
Brooklyn Terminal Market is really nice too - but I went last year and they seem to be catering more to the bulk buyer. Still a great place to check out -
I've gotten stuff at the garden center on the triangle at Flatbush/ Hansen Place near BAM, the GAP Farmer's Market (great for herbs) and at the Chelsea Garden Center in Red Hook (right next to the Fairway). All have great plants/ flowers at pretty decent prices. You can get boxes/ planters at all locations except the Farmer's Market.

is gardel open on sundays? theres no answer at the #

I went yesterday (they opened around 11a) - got some flowers and tools, so thanks everyone for the help. Sad news is, they're actually closing after this season for good. Not sure if that was already discussed here
The guy who was working on Sunday (not Gardel - maybe his nephew) confirmed it to another customer who was in at the same time. Gardel is closing shop to concentrate on real estate we assumed, since he owns a few buildings on the block, so the lot will likely get converted to apts. This sucks because I just discovered this place! And the 'nephew' was pretty bummed - he said he literally 'grew up in this garden' and doesn't know any other way of life. Sigh.
So, as you figured...major clearance sale. -
Hey poshspice, the guys who sell plants at the Grand Army Plaza Farmers’ Market (they are located close to the Public Library end of the market) are part of a wonderful program that teaches down-on-their-luck men skills for working with plants in a nursery setting. All the plants I’ve gotten there have been great—hearty, disease free, and reasonably priced. I’ve had a bunch of them for about 2 years now and they’re still going strong. They don’t have anything too fancy, but the guys who work there are enthusiastic about their plants and very helpful, and it’s a great cause.
The people at the herb stall (in the center, near the entrance to the park) are also very knowledgeable.
Happy gardening! -
bumping this to see if anyone has more details about brooklyn terminal market. is this the kind of place where i could by a bag or two of soil and some annuals, or would i need to be buying 200 bags of soil and an orchard?

If you can hold out, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Annual Plant Sale is coming up:
http://bbg.org/vis2/2008/plantsale/
They grow most of the plants locally and proceeds benefit the garden, natch. -
i'm leaning that way, after hearing from you and some others. thanks.

It definitely caters to the big buyers but they sell stuff in small quantity. The thing I like about it was you can bargain on the price they offer you. I haven't been for a while so I am not sure what the last few years stock has looked like.
