Armory
Hi. I'm looking at moving to the south Slope, and recently looked at an apartment across the street from the Armory (14th St.). I've heard a lot of stories about the place, and wondering what it'd be like as a single woman there late night? Safe? Creepy? And what's the deal with the soon-to-be sports center? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Keep an eye on BrooklynPotter's posts. She knows those blocks well.

i'm on 15th between 8th and the park. i'll be honest: the armory creeps me out. it's gotten better in the past few years, but i still won't walk up 15th street between 7/8 at night. and if i'm walking down 8th late at night i'll walk on the other side of the street.
but. in doing these things, precautions, i have never felt unsafe. plus, for me, both corners of 15th/8th have royal deli and market, and the bus on 15th, so there's some traffic and cabs.
like i said, i'm careful. i'd be completely fine living on 14th street (and, ironically, i have found some seriously good trash on 14th--brand new 7 jeans, an oak sleigh bed, and more goodies)
nobody seems to be able to put their finger on the real story of what's at the armory (what kind of shelter is really there seems to be a question), and whether or not it will be turned into a facility (red tape galore). i'm sure all the construction of fancier condos on 15th will make the city a bit more accountable on those issues.
take the apartment, and welcome! (there's a new kitten at royal, go visit her!) -
See, I said BP, and she showed up (I'm saying "Money" next time!).
New kitty? Where? Deli or the other one? Where is our calico? A few times I went and they were keeping her in the basement. -
the calico is gone, don't know why. they say she just vanished one day a few months ago, and the father wouldn't even talk about it.
it's at the market and it's about 6-8 weeks old, brown tabby, possibly long-haired. very adorable. and tiny. -
Ooooh...I'll have to go by and check her out. That said, they need to stop getting kittens...that worries me.
Anyway, good luck to the original poster. I'm sure you'll be fine. -
Thanks so much! That's the quickest, most helpful answer I could've gotten.
I've heard different versions of the story about the shelter (a battered women's shelter? a shelter for drug-abusing, mentally-ill women?) so not sure what to believe.
Otherwise, think my dog and I would love the neighborhood....

I live a few blocks away, and I love it here (10 years now).
Your dog will love the park...plus, PS is a very dog-friendly place to be (see debates on where/when appropriate to bring dogs)........there's even a doggy beach in the park (where I take my rental dog and she rubs her ass on the rocks on the bottom). -

you've heard the same different rumors we've all heard. i've heard some "official" explanation that it's a domestic violence shelter, which makes no sense because they wouldn't publicly announce where the DV shelter would be to keep the batterers from finding those they've battered.

and if you notice the women, you'll also notice that they're a little, um, odd. they make the guys at royal really irritated. i'm fairly sure the women are mentally ill, if not more. -
take a look at the trees in front of the armory - yesterday there were about 30 parrots in them - eating the fruit and cackling loudly - it was an amazing sight
-
the monk parakeets have made nests there, just like at greenwood.

I dont have dogs of my own, but I do sometimes pet-sit for Slope dogperson. Both pups just love the park. The lab mix loves swimming, but the pug not so much -- he's just too little, I guess, though the excersise would probably help with all that wiggle.

The armory is supposed to be turned into a state of the art sports center, they are going to bus in kids from all over the city (i think, it could just be Brooklyn). There's a chance that locals will be allowed to use the facilities, but it's not a sure thing. I know DeBlasio is working on it. I think the only really negative thing about this is the potential for noise that the kids will make as they go in and out. Children and teenagers are LOUD. And where are they going to park the buses? or are the kids going to arrive on their own? Will it be open at night? All good questions. Does anybody know the answers?
I live on 15th between 8th and the circle, since 1989, and I love this neighborhood, even with all the annoying construction. I hope they are going to be intelligent about the Sports place, it could be an asset and it could be awful for the nabe. -
Parakeets?! That's amazing. Whether this place or someplace else, I like this neighborhood....:-)
Those questions about the sports center and noise/traffic are part of what I've been wondering, especially since I work from home. Just pulled RFP online, and it says it'll be open 7am to 11pm seven days a week with schools' access weekdays 10am to 2pm. -
school access 10 to 2 isn't bad. but who will be using it until 11 PM? kids without teacher supervision or locals? will there be a bigger police presence then?
-
Usually the neighborhood's pretty smart about these things. The Y has a lot of kid programs, but they only allow teens into the cardio/weight rooms from 3-6, and my 14-year-old daughter can tell you they are pretty strict about that. I doubt there'll be a lack of supervision - even at John Jay there are cops on the street corners as the kids come and go.
I doubt a piece of real estate like the Armory would just throw its doors open to teenagers and say, "Whatever, whenever." -
let's no get all excited about what's going to happen at the armory... considering the pace of the city's projects, red tape, the issues of the projects/construction on 15th street, etc, i doubt it's going to happen within the next 5 years no matter what the website says.
and A., google "monk parakeets" and see what you find. they make these amazing twig-sculpture nests, and the cemetary has so many that they have tours of the ones that live there. -
are they parakeets? i thought parrots, no?

they go by the names "monk parakeets" and"quaker parrots" interchangeably. they are in the parrot family. -
Amazing, thanks, brooklynpotter, just checked out the brooklynparrots site for a little history. Haven't seen birds like that outside of South America, and didn't even know they could survive this far north.
And, yeah, true about slowness of city projects and everything else, though usually once the city's put in millions and put out an rfp something eventually happens. -
There was an article about the Armory in the Brooklyn Paper the other day.
Is Armory deal iron clad?

The monk parakeets were bound for a pet store, but once they arrived at JFK, they got loose. They nest in colonies and a group of them settled at the cemetery. So I was told by a person who was working the visitor desk there. They are pretty nifty to see there--so out of place.
-
opossum, there are a billion different stories about the parakeets and that's just one of them. i don't think anyone is really sure where they came from; they had them where i used to live in jersey as well.

Are these the same parrots that nest near Brooklyn College? -
