  • Fuckit. I just talked to my boss and got his okay to just take a vacation day. I'm cranking up the a.c. and going back to sleep.
  • OH NOES! am being forced to do actual work while working at home. *dies*
  • I walked to work. My god it's humid out.
  • Took me just about 2 hrs from Grand Army to Chambers St. Sat on a train at GrAP, sat in the tunnel btw GrAP and Bergen for about 30 min before I got out at Bergen and walked to DeKalb.

if you're still trying to get to Manhattan, go to DeKalb. There are R trains running across the Manhattan Bridge to Grand and Canal Streets. From there, you're on your own.

I had a little sweat going by the time I got to the office, but some of the poor S.O.B.'s I saw on the bridge looked like they had just hopped out of the shower. I'm betting their co-workers are none too pleased they showed up right about now...
It's pretty sad when you can examine someone's tattoo through their shirt.

Man, it took me less than that to walk in...
  • home is where the non-tattooed heart is.

  • My boss called me around 10. She lives in Washington Heights and we work by the trade center. I had given up making it to work after visiting 3 different train stations, including the atlantic terminal, so when the boss called me to tell me she was stuck at 59th street, I told her to go home. I'm loving this impromptu vacay day!
  • 59th is teh nasty.

Another co-worker from Park slope just made it in 10 minutes ago! It's noon and people are trying to get in still. I count my blessings I made it when I did.
  • The trusty B69 got me nicely to DUMBO.

I will say, however, that 1 out of 3 drivers out today was a dumbass.
  • I waited about 30 minutes for the F at 7th Avenue and after seeing only 2 trains go by, packed like sardines, and both just sat there for about 10 minutes, I decided to go home. I also saw an M train on the Coney Island bound tracks, so I knew there were big problems ahead. I was going to go to GAP and take the 2, but found out that wasn't working...then thought about taking the bus to Jay St. but found out the A/C wasn't working. Called in to work and my boss said there were only 4 people there.

Came home and found my husband there, he couldn't get to work, either.

We were supposed to have a big meeting today but we cancelled. When I called the facility to cancel, they said they were short-staffed anyway, so they were glad we cancelled, and the bigwig from our company is stuck in Brooklyn, too, so all is good.

Checking my Blackberry for work info but not much is coming in, so I'm considering a nap. :)

A few questions for the MTA:

    1) Why is there no back contingency plan for flooding? There could have been more buses on the road today - I know they would have been crowded, too, but it would have helped some people get where they needed to go. If my company didn't have a backup plan, we'd be up shit's creek.

    2) At the very least, why can't the MTA send out some staffers with megaphones to various stations and let people know what's happening? The 7th Ave stop doesn't seem to have the capability for announcements in the station, so no one knew what was happening. My co-worker said they announced at her station in Bensonhurst that the trains weren't running and people should just go home.

I've been living in the city for 15 years and the trains seem to have gotten worse in the last 4 years or so. Anyone else feel this way?
  • eeeeeeeeeehhhhh.

    I might still try.
  • All my co-workers from Queens drove in 1 1/2 hours late. My wife just called to say she is still trying to get to work, in Brooklyn! A tree is on the tracks of the Q train?

We think we can handle rough weather, but jeez we arent up to this crap!

    `

I was awake around 6 this morning, and NY1 said that there was a tornado warning for Bay Ridge, Flatbush/Crown Heights (which is my area), and Canarsie. I didn't notice any tornadoes in my neighborhood so I thought nothing had happened.

It took me over an hour to get to 59th Street today. Once I saw all those people at the B41 bus stop by Empire Boulevard I knew that the B and Q were not running, and I knew not to even bother with the IRT. So I took the B48 to Fulton Street and hopped on a C train. Getting out of Brooklyn took forever.

Oh, and I was surprised to see a G train sitting at Hoyt-Schemerhorn. I thought that train was a rare species. :D

More buses would not have helped in my neighborhood; Flatbush Avenue heading northbound was already gridlocked with cars and dollar vans. The poor B41 I saw had to sit at the stop for at least 2 light cycles before it could cross the intersection. Washington Avenue northbound was not much better.

I am surprised that this storm could cripple the whole system like this. I would have expected as much from DC's Metrorail, but not from the MTA.

Oh, and I overheard a track worker say that a tree fell on the Brighton line around Beverly Road; that was why B and Q trains weren't running.

The ticker at the bottom of the screen on News 12 said that expect delays on the B and Q lines-what an understatement that was.
  • wherein I take the old "oh yay, any excuse to not leave my house" and am angry I still have to do stuff.

    sigh.

    need nap!! and official pardon.

Yea, I could've walked in that time, but I held out hope that I'd be able to ride, albeit slowly, in air conditioned comfort. I don't know about you, but walking today in business wear was not terribly pleasant.
  • It took three hours for me to get from Clinton Hill to Midtown East today; starting at 8:15, when I got to the G stop on Clinton and saw it was closed, heard that everything else was, and then walked to a car service to see if I could hitch a ride with another person heading the same direction. I could, but it would be a 90-minute wait. (Fortunately, I called a couple friends I thought would be flying today to warn them, only to find my neighbors in FG weren't flying until tomorrow -- and they took pity on me and invited me to wait at their place.) The car from Lafayette/South Portland to 45th and 3rd took an hour.

Fortunately, my supervisor -- who lives in Queens, lives in a basement apartment and was even later because she was dealing with flooding -- just told me she's going to mark my timesheet as "9 to 5" because dammit, we all made the effort...

Meanwhile, I'm seriously looking into the Water Taxi for the commute home. (Hey -- flooding actually HELPS boats, if you think about it.)
  • You know it's bad when this is said:
"No subway line was unaffected by the heavy rains and winds, according to the M.T.A. For the time being, the M.T.A. was advising commuters to stay at home."

It certainly was an interesting morning. The trains were a complete mess and since I didn't have an alternative train to take (they were all shut down), I decided to find a taxi. Met up with my neighbor, hoping it would make the fare cheaper. We went up to Flatbush (major street to Manhattan) and it was a parking lot. Blaring horns and jam-packed buses. Since it looked like walking would be the next option, I went to Bergen Bagel for breakfast to fuel the long haul. After that we started our trek and right away we saw people boarding a double-decker tour bus. We were like, "Hell, why not... better than walking". So we got on, cleaned off the wet seats and enjoyed the ride. I've always hated those buses in Brooklyn, don't think they should be coming to my hood. But since it literally saved me a huge long sticky HOT walk, I have new respect. Anyway, we rode in, went over the Manhattan bridge and finally walked into the office around 10:30 AM. Worked out fairly well, but it was one of the worst rides in I've had to deal with in a long time.

Looks like the trains are still screwed up and everyone in the city is trying to grab the same cab. Let's just hope the ride home is easy smooth and quick.

That's where I'm at. I've been busy patting myself on the back all morning for getting on the subway by six AM and avoiding all the nonsense, that it is just now occurring to me that soon I will be heading home and I am currently in NJ past the GW bridge. And I'm not sure how I'm getting home yet. Lame.
  • my brother is coming to visit from DC on a train today.

    sucks

If I go to work now It will take me over an hour and then I will be stuck in the evening commute home. hahaha what a shitstorm.
  • So I take it they're saying the trains won't be ready for the PM commute? Looks like the Shoeleather Express for me then....
  • Santa, don't go to work seriously not worth it at this point.

As for the commute home, humm maybe with so many people staying home it won't be so bad? Naaaw it'll suck....
  • I'm not holding my breath, Mamacita, but I will hope for the best.

    A new update is up.

yes, i had to run errands this morning. to bay ridge. took forever on 5th ave and traffic on my side of the street was actually moving. northbound traffic was at a standstill on all the avenues. i only finally got home within the past half hour. screw going to work, i'm going to bed.
  • There's a big part of our tree in the backyard.

I decided to go to Target at Atlantic Center to do some returns. Got stuck in ass-sucking traffic on 4th Ave. Realized part-way there that I only had half of the stuff with me that I needed.

One of those things when you aren't sure if it makes sense to keep going or turn back.

    I kept going.

    And then........

    Target. Fucking. Closed.

Seems they had some flooding. They said they'd open at 1, so I wanted 20 minutes, then they pushed it to 2.

I left down 5th Ave by car. Stopped at Key Foods but somehow Los Pollitos II started screaming my name.

One Negra Modelo and nachos regulares later, I'm back in the house with cold beer, DVDs, TV, kitties and food.

    And I'm not leaving again!
  • Holy crap.

If Target is closed, things are BAD, yo. :)
  • Looks like most of the trains are running again, but with "residual delays". Whatever the f' that means!?! Good thing I've got a book with me.
