Le Toukouleur in Bed-Stuy = AMAZING CAKE !!! — Brooklynian

Le Toukouleur in Bed-Stuy = AMAZING CAKE !!!

I just went to this "French-African" restaurant on 1116 Bedford @ Quincy in Bed-Stuy last night. We were the only people in the entire restaurant, but it was really great so I wanted to hype it up and see what other people's experiences were.

They have a $25 prix fixe for three courses, a great deal. I got a jumbo lump crab cake for app, a whole grilled tilapia stuffed with onions and tomatoes served with a roasted pepper stew, and for dessert, the most amazing cake I've ever had. The menu called it something like a "egg custard cake" but it was unlike any cake I've ever had. it wasn't exactly "cake"-- it wasn't dry like cake is. It wasn't a flan, on the other hand. It was heavenly. It was dense and sort of like a stiff pudding cake that tasted like butter and eggs. This was served with a layer of raspberries and sorbet and cream on top.

Please go and eat this amazing cake! I don't want the restaurant to go out of business!

  • that sounds fabulous and i'm practically there, but i'm pretty particular about my crab cakes: i don't suppose at that price we're talking about fresh lump crab? or, assuming it was frozen, did it at least taste fresh? also, what was your read on the amount of breading in or on it? deep fried or sauteed?

p.s. i will go anyway, but just wanted more info on the crab cakes so i'll know whether to order them or not. i've been disappointed at too many fine nyc restaurants before.
  • This isn't in PH, so I'm moving it to the Bed-Stuy board. :)

You will love the crab cakes, and I don't think they use bread crumbs.
  • I like to think about myself as particular about crab cakes as well.

I wouldn't say it's jumbo lump. It is not like a traditional crab cake that is big chunks of meat with a little bit of binding like mayo or egg. But I still liked it very much! It had good crab flavor. I didn't feel like breading was a problem, which is usually what I take issue with-- the crab gets diluted by cheap bread crumbs, etc. It was pretty big too. It could have been/probably was frozen but I was pleasantly surprised. I am assuming it was deep fried as it didn't have the look of sauteed. It had more of the thoroughly cooked look than a sauteed crab cake usually does.

They also had mussels which I didn't get to try!
  • agreed.
    the food is well cooked.

i love the accra, which i would say is a cod fish :D
    you should try it.

it's an appatizer but i prefer to eat it as a meal
    so i order rice too
  • good to know :P
  • i'm gonna go to this...i assume they have take out?
  • We've gone there several times and it's a place we like. We are often the first ones there, but then again we tend to eat earlier than most, partly to avoid the crowds. The food is excellent and the staff is friendly.
  • omigoodness, how cool to come across some neighbors/fellow good food
lovers!! i really feel so lucky to come across this hidden gem of a
place, you'd so not expect a place like this in this neighborhood :)
..me, my favorites are the crabcakes As Well!!, and the 'zonzon', a
shrimp and avocado appetizer (yumm).. they change their specials
nightly - i had the seafood melange in a coconut tomato sauce last
week - outstanding! Re: desserts, i would be remiss if i did not
mention the 'chocolat gateau', the chocolate cake.. they make it on
the premises - it is near divine (and i am a chocolate Lover), and
they serve it with raspberry and vanilla ice cream, but check and see
if they have the coconut sorbet - Great!
BUT!!! today we had the prix fixe $9.95 brunch, and the crab salmon burger... incredible... i had the omelet of the day, and my husband had the crab salmon burger.. we ordered another burger, it was That delicious. They dress it with blue cheese, and it comes with apple celery remoulade, and ask for the sweet potato fries! (i know, i know, i ramble, but that's how much i love food! and it's my first post. forgive me.. :)
if you guys have any questions, ask. im there, like, once a week ;)
  • Never had brunch there, but I agree about the crabcakes; so that crab salmon burger was that good?.
  • The crab salmon burger is delicious! I've only been for brunch, but I highly recommend this place.
  • Okay you got me, do I have to wait for weekend brunch or can I get it tonight?
  • the crab burger is served only for brunch .
  • I went to Toukouleur Sunday and thought it was good--but what's with the brunch again? (I had the same problem when I finally tried Chavella's. Maybe I just shouldn't try new places on Sunday afternoons.) My boyfriend really liked the crab salmon burger (on an English muffin), but as a vegetarian my only choice was an omelet. (The regular menu that I saw outside had at least one vegetarian dish and one vegan dish.) I like omelets, but ... I've got eggs at home. I wanted French/African food! Overall I like the place, nice decor, nice waitress, the omelet was well cooked but the stuffing (tomato, onion, cheese) was sparse, the fries were good--golden with flecks of sea salt (very nice), and although the salad was very small and a little bruised, it was well dressed and delicious. The coffee was really good (they need to provide a lot more milk for such strong coffee, though) and peach juice was rich and delicious. (Mimosas were on the menu, but crossed off.) I thought it was okay, but I was disappointed I didn't get to try their regular menu. --E.
  • Love this place. I'm a vegetarian and although there aren't many offerings, it's been enough.
I have only been in a couple times though. Don't know if they have a tremendous amount of private parties, or it's just my extreme bad luck that I've turned up to eat here every time they have had a booking in the past 6 months.
Nice people, good food, beautiful atmosphere. Just wish once in a while when I feel like going that they will actually be open to the public.
