4 cats in grave danger - can anyone help? Time sensitive!
Hello everyone,
I am a volunteer with an animal rescue group in Brooklyn called Infinite Hope. We recently discovered about 4 cats at a construction site on 4th Avenue in Brooklyn. A friendly security guy there walked one of our volunteers through the still open ground floor, and showed her the yard in an adjacent back-corner 4-story building where the cats come out of a ramshackle basement. The problem is, that backyard is surrounded by really high walls on two sides, (like, at least a story high), and once the new construction progresses a bit further, and they close off the back walls of what is at least a 10-story building, the cats are going to be trapped in that backyard. There is nothing there, not even a tree – it’s just gravel. And there is no way out. He says no one in the building is taking care of them, and it looks like a total absentee landlord situation.
We are currently reaching out to our contacts at various Brooklyn feral groups in hopes that perhaps one of them can help. These cats are truly in imminent danger of being walled up, and our present base of foster home volunteers are all filled to capacity right now!
These cats seem shy, but most likely adoptable after spending a little time with people. The security guard says that they come over to him when he gives them leftover food, and one lets him pet him. But we probably have a week or so to try and get them out of there. Even if they could stay in some other backyard temporarily, that would be better than where they are. The security guard is friendly, and would like to help the cats himself but he has a year-old pit bull that he found wandering the streets as a puppy, so he can’t; although he does want to help us and gave us his contact information so that we can work with him on rescuing the cats. He knows the other two security guys as well, and says that they will likewise help out, so access in this case won’t be an issue.
There is simply no way these cats can stay where they are – they will starve. We have trapping covered, but what we really need are HOMES - temporary, foster homes - even a backyard would be better than where they are now - something to buy us some time with which to help find homes for the cats.
Please forward this to anyone else who might be able to help. It’s just four cats, and if we all reach out, to everyone we can, we might be able to come up with something.
If you can help provide even a temporary home for one or more of these cats, please let us know by replying to this post or emailing directly to [email protected]
Thanks very much!

I am going to see if I can get my husband to agree.. I could keep them in a crate in my backyard, do you think that would do?
Are they still around? -
Hi there and thank you for your generous (potential) offer! Anything is better than where they are now, and we really do need some temporary physical places to put them until we have room either at Infinite Hope or within a foster home. We do have someone who can take 1 or 2 of them once trapped, which is wonderful. So there would most likely be only 2 more - unless we were wrong in the initial count. Why don't you email me at [email protected] and then I can give you my phone number, etc, and we can discuss the crate possibility in more detail... Thanks so much!

A quick note to say that we have found a foster home for 2 of these cats, who were both vetted/neutered/spayed this weekend and fortunately are negative for FIV and FeLV, which bodes well for the rest of them! "Bob the Builder" and sister "Siri" are about 1 year old, healthy, very timid cats with sweet dispositions. Although frightened, Bob did not object to being picked up when transferred from a crate to a carrier to go to his foster home. Siri will be joining him tonight.
There are actually 3 more cats at the site, where the conditions are absolutely despicable. The 4th wall will begin going up sometime next week, so we are going to try to trap the remaining cats early in the week and we still need places to put them - either foster homes or to a managed feral colony where they can be monitored and will be safe. We believe one of the young females at the sight is pregnant; finding a foster home for her is of the essence so that we can make sure her kittens are okay, can be examined, and then adopted out when the time comes.
Again, if anyone can provide a temporary home for one or two of these cats, please do let us know. You can email [email protected] or [email protected] Thanks so much! -
I wish I could help! I already have 2 foster cats right now on top of my 4 cats and 2 dogs. It would be chaos to add anymore since they're all getting along pretty well. I could put up a sign at my job if you want, just let me know what info it should have. Good luck!
