Hi, I think you misjudged me just a bit --
Damn is is so hard to type those letters because I have a friend who is also a Jillian. But, just by your topic of "worries" "bagels," etc. Just go home. This ins't Williamsbugh circa 93'. It saddens me and outrages me that there are so many welcome arms to a post such as this. This isn't the greatest neighborhood in the world and never has it been expected to be so....but such mundane bullshit is intolerable. I really hope it is too hard for you. I really hope your landlord drives your rent through the roof. I HOPE that you move ASAP because you don't have a clue about what this place is like. You are concerened with all this shit that you can get in soooooo many other places to live in this city and it is evident that you are not here by choice. You are here by rent and a good deal. Well, you WILL not find a good bagel or scallion goddamned cream cheese near Frankin Ave........ So, maybe, though it seems as if you already signed your lease, you should really reconsider. Queens really is a beautiful place, don't ya think?
I don't want to live in Williamsburg, Ive never been there and dont ever plan to go there. I also don't expect it to be the greatest neighborhood in the world - I was asking primarily about the overall feel when walking down the street for little white girls like myself, if there was a tip (like to walk up classon rather than franklin) or something. Just some general advice. I was moving here regardless.
I am definitely here by choice, I was looking at here and Clinton Hill, because yes, it is in my price range, and I like the central location (I go to school in flatbush), and I like the overall feel of the neighborhood. I posted this after reading about people going on and on about shootings in the area. I'm from eastern Long Island (so if you tell me 'go home,' thats not possible, I need to live somewhere in brooklyn) so I'm just not used to hearing (or seeing) gunshots, that's all. if that makes me naive, that's ok with me. I also don't want scallion cream cheese, regular cream cheese is good with me. But whatever I can get - a muffin, an egg sandwich, or something I've never had - for breakfast is fine by me. Im not picky, I'm not a yuppie, and I'm not an idiot, so please don't speak to me like I am one. Thanks. Glad to be in the neighborhood : )

homeowner wrote: Okay, so here's the scoop without all of the crap. This portion of CH is primarily a black neighborhood with a large percentage of the residents coming from Caribbean backgrounds. Therefore, bagels are not indigenous to Franklin Avenue. You are much more likely to come across the following as breakfast options:
Hey, thank you for the response - I knew it was primarily a black neighborhood when I moved here, I didn't realize that meant no bagels. But that's fine, maybe I'll try something new : ) I think I did get a little misjudged by my post... I am not a vegan or a vegetarian, I've never had a latte (coffee, milk no sugar is my drink). I also know how to drink a regular cup of coffee "unsleeved," driving, walking, on the subway, AND transferring; and I know how to order things without pissing people off. But I appreciate the tips.
Saltfish and Ackee
Bun and Cheese
or the bodega basic
Egg and Cheese on a roll. (Sometimes called Bacon, Egg and Cheese on a roll depending on the buyer’s tolerance for the evil swine)
If you are a vegan, vegetarian, on a low fat, low carb or any other low regimen, you might want to eat at home or wait until you get to your destination to eat. If you discover a spot that caters to your particular dietary needs keep it on the low.
Coffee is available at almost any bodega/corner store in the area. It comes in two sizes (small and large) and four ways (black, black and sweet, light, light and sweet). That is universal and it doesn't matter if the proprietor is Jamaican, Dominican, Arabic, or Asian you'll get your coffee the same from each. There are no lattes. Don’t ask for them. You will forever be labeled as an outsider and loose all of the valuable street cred you have gotten from living here.
If you don’t know how to drink your coffee without spilling it on the train, bring your own travel mug and make the transfer. Otherwise you get it in two cups. There are no fancy sleeves. Bodegas in the morning are filled with unhappy people up early to go to school or work, so know what you want when you walk in. Don’t dawdle and don’t stand there trying to make up your mind while others are waiting to pay for their coffee or paper or candy. Now is not the time to try and make friends. It’s too damn early for that.
Thanks for your question and welcome to the neighborhood.
: ) and thank you for the welcome! -
one of my favorite breakfasts is a jamaican patty. the patty places, if they're open, often have other baked goods for sale so if you don't want spicy beef, there are other things. I don't know of any specifically in your area, though I did get a pretty good patty at cock's (hahahahah! awesome name) after the parade a few weeks ago.
good luck & enjoy! -

See, you should have started with "I'm from Long Island". There are almost as many Brooklynites there are there are in the borough. Here I was thinking you were another Minnesotan (sp?) pining away for cheese curds.
: ) and thank you for the welcome!

Subject: An Apology
Guest, appolonia 666, and Jillian,
You are entirely right. I was cold busted on the forum here. I had a few drinks in me and in an uncharcteristic rage of anger I wrote what I did. Sorry. It was shitty and I take it back, for whatever that's worth. It is easy to become pessimistic and pissy whenever you pour over this site.

BTW,
There is a bagel place on Washington somewhere near St. Mark's or Bergen or somewhere around there. Haven't tried it yet, but it exists.

yeah its on Washington and Bergen I never ate there either... but I am guessing its okay.

We all get pissy sometimes. It's especially easy to do online, when you don't know the person you're responding to. -

It's between Bergen and St. Marks, closer to Bergen and on the east side of the block. I went in once, the day I moved into my place a couple of blocks away at the beginning of April. At time time it was kind of bare (blank walls, flourescent overhead lighting, etc.) and the bagels were okay but not spectacular, but they'd just opened a few days before so it may have changed a lot since then. The staff was really friendly, though. Don't know why I've never made it back in, but I will have to try to do so soon to see what it's like now.

There definitely are! My mother grew up in flatbush (and the only white family in the neighborhood in the 1970s, at that) and now I'm going to school there... you could say I'm trying to find my roots... or maybe not : )

Yeah I was gonna say, hey, it's not like I'm from Ohio ... (no offense to those from Ohio) : ) -

Thank you for the apology! : ) (and your signiture quote is quite fitting) no hard feelings. As for the bagel place, it won't work as a breakfast thing since that's not on my way to the subway, but I'll definitely check it out someday, thanks for the reccomendation : )

Not sure how to respond to that, Stacy. I just, said too much with too little thought. And it was a mix. Merlot makes me mellow. Just ownin' up to my call on the board and admitting I was an asshole, regardless of the booze.....(

thnx for the better day idea. had one and feel better, but still internally angry about lots. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
