Cheapest (or cheaper) vets in brooklyn

i'm a little hesitant to ask as it might sound like i'm a bad pet owner or something, but let's face it, vets in this town are expensive. so where are the cheapest vets?

i'm out in bushwick, my nearest vet is over the border into Ridgewood. i'll probably just keep going there out of habit in any case but i have no frame of reference for average vet costs.

i'd like to find out what some of the going rates are at some of the vets around here, esp for cats. i just took in 3 kittens for their first vet trip, they have mild URIs so they just got some antibiotics, flea meds and deworming. here's the bill breakdown:

$129 for the office visit/consultation ($43 per kitten)
$37 for the Clavamox ($12.33)
$52 for the Revolution ($17.33)
$25 for deworming ($8.33)

so how does this compare with other vets? i used to go to the vet on Vanderbilt and Greene when i lived in clinton hill, i remember they always seemed very pricey, but i can't remember exactly how much stuff went for.

of course, there are reduced-cost services out there like Muffin's Pet Connection low-cost spay and neuter and the ASCPA's Mobile Spay Unit (which I recently used, got the cat neutered, given vaccines and rabies shots for $30!) but i'd still like to hear what people are actually paying at their vet offices.

  • Vets that are both cheap and good are hard to come by around here. I think there simply isn't enough competition to drive prices down.

Besides muffins and aspca, there are another couple of very good deals to be found, though:

Animal Care & Control's "The Big Fix":
    $25 spay/neuter cat
    $35 s/n dog
    $10 vaccinations, leukemia tests
    $7 flea/tick treatment

    Petland Discounts' "Vet My Pet":
Low-cost vaccines plus vet check-up, for cats ranges from $45-$65 (don't know dog prices), depending on what treatments you are getting. The cool thing about this is that the vet consultation is free; you pay only for the vaccines.

"Luv My Pet" clinics at Petcos all over nyc:
vaccines + tests range from $39-$64, cats or dogs

  • thanks, Laura! i didn't know about the ACC Big Fix, that's a great deal for spay/neuter.

it's tough in this city, cuz even the 'bad' vets can be expensive! i'm glad to hear about these alternative resources for things like shots and tests that don't necessitate a vet visit.
