    Where is it?
    Name?

I'd love to check it out.

  • I haven't tried any of the Brooklyn walls. Are you talking about the wall in that gymnastics/kids space? I was in there for a party. It looked better than a lot of places I've seen, but I thought the place was just for kids (was there at a kids b-day party). Is it open for general climbing?

I miss Harmony Atrium. That place was my home away from home for years.
  • I haven't been to the one on third--just found it when I did a google search. I'm curious now...

    Here's what the ad said:

    Powerplay Recreational Center
    432 Third Avenue
    Brooklyn, New York 11215
    (718) 369-9880
    > Caving, top rope, lead climbing, bouldering and a couple of overhangs that lead to a thrilling ceiling mounted climbing wall surface.
  • Yep, that's the place. It sounds like its open for general climbing. Someone needs to check it out...
  • Subject: walls

I just called Powerplay on 3rd Ave. and got a little info from the girl who answered the phones.

They do have a kids wall, but there is an adult wall downstairs with 5 panels. They are currently waiting to have it inspected/approved by whoever (it may just be getting the basement approved by the fire marshal--I didn't catch all of the exacts or the inspection).

Once it's open, she thinks the hours will be something like 6-9 for free climb on weekdays.

I'm hoping to go look once it's open and maybe they'll let me take a few pictures.

Let us know if you check it out!
  • you know what i would like to have happen to the armory? i'd like the shelter to go away. screw a climbing wall and put the resources into dealing with these women because they are making me, neighbors, the owners of royal, etc., totally nuts. does nobody run the place?
  • I went by Powerplay about 2 weeks ago. The wall was "ready" but no routes were set yet. I was told they planned to set them that week.

It wasn't huge and it wasn't very tall, but my only comparison it to Chelsea Piers so I don't really know if it's fair to compare since CP is supposedly amazingly awesome as far as indoor walls go.

I've got some pics on my pc at home, so PM if you want them.

You can stop by and see it anytime the place is open. They were really friendly and happy to show it to me.

    maybe he lost your number?
    :D
Seriously, there was community input about making a rec ctr there. I don't live close enough to care that much, or follow the issue very closely for that matter, but I do know the rec ctr aspect was part of a reaction to people complaining about the homeless shelter there.

Hamilton, do us a wee favor: stop shouting.
    Thx.

Gunkman, contact Marty, and your councilperson (probably diBlasio.)
If you have some climbing connections, make an offer to help organize it or get gear donations or teach climbing to kids or . . .

On the other end of the Slope, the Lyceum just started a batting cage and trapeze classes -- they appear to be branching out. You could suggest it to them.
