Jackie Duncan/All For Paws on PPW.

Technically WT, but she was fairly well-known in the 'hood.

There's a sign in All For Paws about Jackie Duncan (owner). She died of cancer in June.

It was obvious that she was quite ill for a long time, but I didn't realized she had died until the sign went up. There was no service and there is a request for donations instead of flowers.

Jackie was quite a character - a real straight-talker with a potty mouth, who was very obviously dedicated to animals (including the cats who found great homes within her store). I always got a kick out of her, and will miss her presence.

The store is staying open, which is good news.

  • ohmygod....
every visit i half expected her to not be there working, due to her illness.
but nope. even if she was bald from the chemo or obviously weak she was there working.

she could have made a lot more money if she wanted to but she wasn't out to gouge anyone.
she was a very good person with a frank mouth. loved that about her.
  • Yeah, it's a loss to the community, it really is. She was one of the people who made the neighborhood.

And you could kvell about your pet, or ask quesions, or worry about their health with her. I'll miss her.
  • Jackie was obviously fighting C for quite awhile. Wotta woman. She will be missed.
  • who's going to be running the place, anyone know?
  • I assume Vivian. She's still there, and I haven't seen anybody new who looks like a manager.
  • i wish Vivian the best

    Jackie will be missed.

    wow. hard to believe.
  • I know. I didn't realize it had been over 2 months since I had seen her. It was obvious she wasn't doing too well, but I didn't realize she had died until the sign went up.
  • The latest info I've heard is the store may be closing soon. It seems Jackie left the store to someone that will sell it to Vivian. She's not sure she can get a loan or if the store can still make. Have any of you guys been in there lately? The shelves are getting bare and you can tell they haven't had a delivery in a few weeks. I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT JACKIE WOULD LEAVE THE STORE TO ANYONE OTHER THEN VIVIAN. I hope she can do this.
  • i was in there the other day and the young boy who worked there said it was still up in the air as to whether they'd stay open.

and the two cats were both sitting by the front, and they seemed like they were kind of waiting for something. very sad.

anything think of anything we can do?
  • well since this person doesn't want the store for themself, maybe they should just give vivian the store. yeah, right, they got the store for nothing, so why can't they give it to someone who wants it.
i know it sounds crazy, but i'm serious. think about it. someone gives you something, you don't want it. someone else wants it and needs it more than you--wouldn't you give it to them?
we should get as many people to write letters and bring them to the store and vivian could give them to the person. i mean their must be some good in this person if Jackie would leave them the store.
    any other bright ideas?

only we don't know the circumstances under which the store was left to the third party, and businesses cost $$ and estates need to be settled. it's generally not something "free". you're assuming that it's simply a storefront, but have no idea what arrangements were made.
  • BP beat me to it. We don't know the details of who or why it was left to somebody and what it would take for Vivian to own it.

That said, I hope they find a resolution. I love this store and would hate to see it go away.
  • All is what I know is that I don't want to see the store close. They have big sale signs on the windows and door. And we all know how people love a sale.
They don't care that even if Vivian can get the money for the store, she would have to restock the entire store. Inwhich case is like starting a business from scratch, which is much harder then buying an esablished business.
  • bonkers, other than the sale sign in the window, where are you getting your information? who is telling you these things?
  • banned for prying!
  • Subject: JACKIE DUNCAN/ALL FOR PAWS

I am getting most of my info from Vivian herself. She is a friend of mine and I know this ordeal is very stressful on her. I mean have you seen her lately?
She's very upset. Sometimes she looks like she's been crying.
She doesn't know what she will do if the store closes. Jackie promised her the store and now it's like well if It's really not much time to give anybody. you want it pay me. Wouldn't you be hurt or mad or angry? So I have taken it upon myself to try and help.
Unforturnately either she has the money or the store closes in the end of September. It's really not alot of time to give anyone. I mean you have to talk to lawyers, accountants, the bank. Yet she's always at the store. When can she go and talk to someone?
  • unfortunately, if she wasn't left the store in jackie's will she'll need to come up with the cash to make it her own.

is that why she's having the sale?

and she needs to take the time to go and talk with someone; i know there's a young man who works there who watches the place sometimes. and even if the person who was left the store were to give it to vivian, there will be taxes to pay. i'm not quite sure whom you think is going to pay those taxes.

i don't mean to be difficult, but wills and estates and tricky things. (and for those of us without wills, and i've been meaning to do mine for months now, get over to nolo and do it... in ny state if you die without a will the state becomes your executor.)
  • The sale is really a going out of business sale. Though not being publicly announced. You can't put things 50% off and make enough money to do anything.
She is going to see someone this week. As for the young man you are referring to he goes back to school this week, which leaves a limited time frame in which to work with.
Her biggest problem will be the rent. It seems the owner of the building also passed away. Her son will take over as owner, and he wants to bring the rent up another $2000. An increase in rent, paying back the bank loan (if she can get one), the taxes, and refilling an inventory that is being depleated as we speak will be differcult at best for anyone.
But she says if someone tells her it can be done, she will go for it. :D
  • I just walked by and noticed that the sign about Jackie saying the store would remain open is gone. Now there are signs for 40-50% off in the window.

Man, I'd hate to see this place go. Am not in a financial position to help, but wish there was something else that could be done.
  • Subject: Jackie Duncan

Wow, the specutlation is running rampant. Let me talk facts. Jackie Duncan was a HUGE part of the community. She was on the avenue for over 20 years and LASTED...while others failed. She worked her butt off and was a SUCCESS. I think you folks should let her rest in peace. Without a doubt, BROOKLYNPOTTER is closest to making sense.
As for the idle gossips and rumor mongers, I say FOR SHAME!
You don't know the truth so as my mother used to say..."MYOB"
    C'mom folks...raise the level for a change.
Rest in peace Jackie. I've always loved you....and I always will.
  • Subject: Jackie Duncan

This is in response to knowsmorethanu, nobody is making any disrespectful comments about Jackie, nor is anyone gossiping about her. All is what we're doing is trying to come up with ideas to help keep the store open, period.
If you can think of an idea, great--but don't insult us, asif we're sitting around talking trash about Jackie.
Everyone here has their own memories about Jackie and All For Paws. I for one will never forget her. And I want the store to continue as ALL FOR PAWS not turn into another overprice duplicate of the stores on 7th and 5th Aves.
  • I only ever saw one woman working in there. Short dark hair, didn't talk much tho'. Was that Jackie? Who is Vivian?

    Thanks.
  • You probably saw Vivian. She is pretty quiet. Jackie talked to people all the time.....Jackie also had short dark hair (but at the end lost most of it and sometimes wore a baseball cap). She was outgoing and cursed a lot. If you had met her, you'd remember :-)

I went in today and Vivian was due to have a meeting this afternoon to get some more info.

I'm not going to share all of the details, but let's just say things are up in the air at this point.

    I'm hopeful that there's a good resolution.
  • ***I'm not going to share all of the details, but let's just say things are up in the air at this point.***

Like I said before...idle gossip and rumors....

Flexchick, you won't share "all the details" because you don't have any. There are three sides t every story and you have ummm, one.
    Please, FIND A HOBBY.

You are not even considering that Jackie has actual family members that are still grief stricken. You are sooo off point...and out of line.
  • Ok, I don't know who you are, but I don't think I shared anything inappropriate. There are obviously many people involved in this and many sides to every story. People who read this board are smart enough to realize that and to decide what (if anything.... including your input) to believe. People who post here for a while generally have an idea of poster and their personalities, intentions, etc. With that, they can assess who they think is speaking from knowledge, who is just stirring shit, etc.

Many people knew and cared about Jackie. Including me and all of the others who posted on this thread. Many people want to see that store stay open and are interested in the outcome.

So, instead of thinking that people won't let Jackie rest in peace, how about thinking that people are participating in this conversation because they cared about her and they care about the neighborhood, the store, Vivian, the cats or anything else and would like to see a happy resolution?
  • What you are "sharing" is heresay. That is inappropriate.
This is not a soap opera for people to tune in to.
There are real people whose lives are deeply affected by this.
I don't mean where you'll buy your next bag of food for your animal.
I mean REALLY affected. Now, step off.
  • I don't think "things are up in the air" is either inaccurate or inappropriate....nor am I going to continue to engage with you in this discussion. You obviously have your own opinion, and (like me) you are entitled to it.
  • perhaps you'd like to tell us who you are so we can have a better idea of why you're so jumpy and angry about the things we're saying about people and a business we care about.
  • "up in the air"....now THERE'S BREAKING NEWS!

No, I don't need to justify myself Potter. I gave you your props earlier and now you resort to name calling. Now, who's jumpy?

I am here for one reason only. I won't standy idly by while people pretend to know facts and spew heresay. Jackie doesn't deserve that. RIP JD.
  • ok, just because you gave me "props" doesn't mean i'm not going to ask questions. besides, saying that someone is jumpy is not name-calling. don't be pitting me against flexi, it won't work. what are you, 12 years old?

and the word would be hearsay.
