  • OMG....point offs for spelling....whatever will I do??
That's really mature for someone over 13.
    Deflect and run....great tactics.

  • mod here.

please cool it. if you are too upset to take the internet, then log off.

let's keep this thread on topic -- missing jackie, hoping the store doesn't close, etc.

    thank you.

  • A colorful member of our community has passed on. Wishing her legacy to continue in the form of her business and for someone she trusted for so long to head it comes from the hearts of her customers, neighbors and friends. This is respect to the deceased. That she was fiery and spoke her mind endeared her to more people than it offended. That her store may close so soon and her memory erased from this street saddens many. If anyone has any good stories or anecdotes they would like to share here to keep Jackie's memory alive please share them.
  • This just in: there just might be alittle light at the end of the tunnel. The meeting went well. Don't know all the details yet. Keep your fingers crossed.
On another note to knowsmorethanu I am sorry if the way inwhich we all are discussing Jackie's death bothers you. I feel somewhat responsible for that, since I started the conversion going in this direction. Before that it was just 2 or 3 people talking about hearing that Jackie just passed away. Everyone who contributes here has stories about her and has entered her store as many times as you have. Taking a second look at your first entry in this topic, I feel I now know who you are. You always said Jackie was one tough broad. She would never take that as an insult. If you said something that was a lie, or went out of your way to hurt her, that would bother her, But never the truth. I believe she would be proud that so many people would come together to help keep her store and her memory alive. She would love the idea that people are coming together to help Vivian.
And you should take a look at the entry above this one. I believe Tobie hit the nail on the head there with that one.
  • Thank you sweet tea and tobie for raising the level. That's what my point is all about.
bonkers, if you truly knew Jackie than you do know who I am. You are correct about cluing you in on my first post. I accept your apology.
Remember folks, we tend to think of ourselves as anonymous, faceless people when on the internet. Things are said here that you would never say in person. I also know who some of you are....and yes, I can put a face to it.
Jackie's passing is truly the end of an era. I'd welcome some fun stories about your experiences with her. But please, don't believe what you hear as far as the store goes. You are not getting it from the source. I guarantee it.
    Peace. RIP JD.
  • Good news, Vivian has started the process of opening a store one block up from AFP. Since she cannot use the name, it will have to be called something else. She first thought of JACKIE'S PET STORE, but she says she doesn't think Jackie would want that, I guess it's true or she would of named the store after herself in the first place. Her second guess is to name the store after the cats in the store- Susie and Lulu, whom Jackie cared for tremendously. If someone can think of another name please feel free to chip in.:D
As for a funny story about Jackie there was this time I was in the store and she was reading the newspaper and telling me about this 12 year old boy in Iraq who was willing to be a sucide bomber because the Iraqies told him he would go to heaven and get 72 virgins for blowing himself up with the rest of the people rhey were trying to kill. The story struck her so hard that she could not stop laughing to the point that she had tears in her eyes. She had me laughing so hard that I had to get out of the store before a wet my pants.
  • not to take away from the good news but I wonder what newspapers report that Iraq stuff? While I think there is truth that suicide bombers believe they are on an important mission, I have to wonder about the rest. but who knows...? there's such a cultural gap and we get so much misinformation ..is my point. I realize this was not the point of your post.

who gets to use the name of the store?
  • i'm pretty sure the 72 virgins thing is part of the package

As everyone knows by now AFP is closed.
Vivian just signed the lease for a store up the block at 240 PPW. She just needs to paint it and then get the shelves up. She's hoping it won't take more then two or three weeks at the most.
  • :D:D:D:D AS EVERYONE PROBABLY KNOWS, THE NEW STORE IS NOW OPEN. HOPEFULLY EVERYONE WILL COME BACK.
IT'S BEEN A LONG TWO AND A HALF MONTHS.
I WISH VIVIAN ALL THE SUCCESS SHE DESERVES.
MAY FUR, FEATHERS & FINS BE AROUND FOR MANY YEARS TO COME.
  • Vivian here. I would like to thank everyone for all your words of encouragement and support this past year. It meant a lot to me.
Trying to make a go of the new store all by myself has proved to be much harder than I had anticipated. Unfortunately I could not make a success of the store and it will have to close. I rushed into this too quickly without giving it enough thought as to what I was getting myself into.
Again I would like to thank everyone who supported the store. Some of you changed the brand of pet food you've been using just so you could shop here. Some of you would stop by with your dog just to say hello-just like they would do with Jackie.
Again I'm really sorry I could not make a go of the store, and I hope the neighborhood does get a pet store cause I know we need one.
P.S. Susie and Lulu (the two cats over at All For Paws) are fine, everybody has been asking me about them, I have them at home. The cat at the new store will be going to a new home, too. Their are two customers who are interested in him, so Timber/Romeo/Ollie will be fine. The person who gave him to me and/or myself will have to pick one of them. Whoever that will be, I know the cat will be fine since I have known both of them for years.
    Bye for now.
  • Subject: best of luck

    hi vivian,
so sorry it didn't work out! It's tough now a days, no matter what, but you had a good heart and spirit (it sounds like).

best of luck & thanks for updating about the cats.

    when is your last day?

    cat.
  • Hi Cat,
Thanks, I will know tomorrow when I speak to my lawyer when the store will actually close. The corporation has to be closed first, but I'm not sure how long it takes for all the filing to be done. It may take a day, or it may take a week. Funds are very low, and I have not been able to reorder, so most of the stuff people are looking for I don't have anyway.
It was good to see someone checks this site, since the last posting was in December. Several customers told me their are new blogs where people are writing about the store. But they would never give me the info. I don't know if they figured if their was something bad written about me it would insult me. I don't know. The truth is I feel so bad, you couldn't say anything that would make me feel worst then I do right now.
I only found out about this site from a customer last August who left me a note to check out this blog. I never found out who she was.
  • Hi Vivian -

I'm sorry to hear that the store is closing. I tried to come in a few times this week to get some food for my cat, and wasn't sure why the gate was down.

Thanks for updating us, and I hope that you know that you and Jackie provided us with a great store and service for many years.....along with plenty of kitties to visit (my personal favorite will always be Ralphie).

    Best of luck to you
  • Oh Vivian, I'm so sorry to hear this. Best of luck in your future endeavors and take care of yourself.
  • Vivian -

I know how much you love your pets, but I keep walking by and seeing the cat (Ollie/Romeo) locked in the store.

Please just ease my mind and tell me somebody is checking in on him. I'm so glad you've already found some people interested in him....he's very sweet
  • Vivian

Please keep us up to date, is there any chance of keeping the store open?
--all for paws is an institution to many of us

    damn

    sadness

i wish you all the best no matter what

    xoxo
  • I am going in the store everyday. The cat is doing fine and should be neutered on Monday and I hope then he can go to his new forever home then.
As for me, the landlord wants me to give him the keys and clear out the store also by Monday. I will find out what my lawyer says about this on Monday. Either way I can't get everything out of there in two days, so I'm hoping I will get an extra couple of days- which is really extra time for the cat. I can't empty out the store and leave the cat in there, even if it's just overnight because someone might call the ASPCA or police. So I need to remove the cat first, then clear out.
Again I want to thank everyone for all the kind words, and if I could do it all over again, I would. I'd change some of the ways I did things, but I'd still do it again. Some of it was fun, and I'll never forget it- the good and the bad times. AND I'LL NEVER FORGET THE PEOPLE AND THE PETS THAT MADE IT ALL WORTHWHILE.
    until later,
    Vivian
  • Vivian... Bottom line.. It sounds like you have done your best in honor of Jackie's memory. All good things and of course you will take care for this cat but take good care of yourself, as well.

    G-d bless!!
  • Thanks everyone.
I had to sign the surrender papers to the store today-I wish I could of kept it but it just could not be done.
The people who are taken it over are going to keep it a pet store. Can you believe this. I mean I know they have the right to make the store anything they want, but I feel like they took the place from right under my feet.
These two men have been coming into the store since I opened about once a month. They would look around ask hows business, wish me good luck and then leave.
The landlord told me he would take over the store and keep it a pet store and let me run it in return of me breaking the lease and I would get one month security back, though he doesn't have to since the lease says he keeps the money if I leave before the lease is up. Then he just changed his mind when the two guys showed up. I get no money and I lose the store and all in 24 hours.
The men say they will buy the inventory I have left, but they want to see the bills so they can see how much I paid for them. I think they want to see the bills so they know what distributors to use. I don't think they know much about the pet business. Well there's no way to show them the bills without them knowing who I was getting my supplies from.
Right or wrong, or maybe a better word would be selfishly, I will not help them to make the store a success. I mean what am I getting out of this?
I don't want to see someone else come in and finish what I started. Am I wrong? Am I being selfish?

    .
Vivian, in your most recent post you ask if it's wrong to want to see the new people fail in the store. That is a 100% understandable emotion to have about something you worked so hard for. But back in an earlier post, quoted above, you shared with us that the store was going to go under for various reasons, and these two men weren't mentioned. With all the work you put into it, unfortunately you were not able to make the store a success and now it sounds like you don't want them to have any chance at success either. To me, that solution is lose-lose-lose. You lose because you won't even get paid for the remaining inventory. These new guys lose, because they've already made some type of investment and now they're going to have to increase it and finally, the pet owners lose because they don't have a store to go to.

Just an observation...you will ultimately make the decision that you are comfortable with and that will be the right decision for you.

Actually pet owners have a great store to go to in Windsor Terrace (I have NO affiliation with the store except that I now shop there exclusively). It is on Ft. Hamilton Parkway and East 3rd and is half a pet store and half an animal rescue center run by a guy who just loves animals. (Hamilton Dog House).

Did you read about the little frog that was found on a head of lettuce at the food coop? Sean drove over his rescue van and not only rescued that little frog but also found a home for him (her?)!!

He will order ANY kind of food you need or products and his prices are COMPETITIVE. This is a fantastic store if you are an animal lover. And if you love dogs but can't have one? You can stop by and take one of the many dogs available for rescue out for a run or walk.

So instead of going to a store that is being taken over, why not give this new business run by a real animal devotee a chance and support someone whose life mission it is to rescue cast aside animals?
  • To turtle95, when I said I felt like they where taking the store away from me, I meant because of the way they went about the whole thing. They came they are paying more rent then I was, since I was going to lose the place anyway why not come to me and buy the lease from me and take the inventory too. Then we all win. But don't act all innocent. Someone I know who was helping me clean out the store knows one of the two men. When she saw him over by the place they started talking and she asked what type of store it was going to be he laughed and said well certainly not a pet store it was gonna be fast food or an internet cafe. Now I was in the store at the time so I heard it myself. And then the landlord is saying he will own the store, not these two men.
It's not that I want the store to fail, it's more that I don't like the way they went about getting it. The landlord makes me promises, then changes his mind but doesn't tell me until I've signed all the papers.
I could of been a real bitch and had him take me to court to get me out of the store, we would of been in court for months before he could of gotten me out. But I didn't. And that is what everyone was counting on.
