Has anyone been to Kitchen Bar? How is it?

  • been there a few times, though not in recent months. the atmosphere is lovely. the kitchen is a little hit or miss, though. i understand that they have seriously curtailed the menu, but their best appy -- tapas burgers -- are still on. went once for bunch. enjoyed the food, but the live music was entirely too loud -- though nice, there was no way to converse over it.
  • Where and what is kitchen Bar?
  • Been there twice, but not since May. It was fine - decent (although not too adventurous) menu, fair prices, decent service. Good miniburgers.

    it's 6th Ave at around 20th st.
  • I just tried their tuna & guac ceviche. It was very good.
  • It's down on 6th Ave, at about 20th Street. I've been there 3 or 4 times and like the atmosphere and the people a lot. It reminds me of the more relaxed and less yuppified places in Park Slope in the 70s.
My favorite menu item too was the mini-burgers but the last time I was there, they were terrible. Don't know if it was the cook's day off or what. The buns were stale and the burgers were skimpy and overcooked. Altogether I could hardly swallow bites because everything was so hard and dry. I sent them back, saying I'd ordered them medium rare -- and they came out overcooked again, so I gave up.
I might try them once more to see if that was just an exception.
The first time I went I ordered a pasta dish which was unexceptional.
  • I was sooo looking forward to trying Kitchen Bar today. Despite the bracing cold and wind, we trekked over to 20th St around 1pm today.... and were turned away b/c we hadn't thought to make a reservation

The place was half-full - and it looked like they were expecting a large group but.... even if they had been able to squeeze us in, there was a live band that was so loud the barkeep had to yell twice before we could understand that she was telling us they were fully-booked. Don't think I could have tolerated the noise level - really wanted to be able to chat and catch up with friends.

Does anyone know if there's a better time to avoid the live music and if they usually require reservations.... ?
  • I liked them at first, but haven't been there in months because they can't seen to decide what they're about.

They changed their hours a few times and keep messing with the menu. Half the time they're out of what's on there anyway. Also, everytime they make the smallest change they mail out new menus. The last time we got one it was to announce that they were now serving onion rings on Thursdays (that was the only difference). Sometimes it seems like a casual, family-friendly place and at other it seems like a lounge w/ bad, loud music. :?
  • Haven't made it out there despite living in the South Slope. But I've heard good things about the food and their jazz nights (Tuesday, I believe).
  • i like it, and i like to support it considering the dearth of restaurants in the nabe. i avoid it on thurs nites and sundays -- the live music is waaaaaaay too loud if you're looking to chat with yer mates. made the mistake of going there on a sunday afternoon for brunch with family, and we spent the time either shouting at each other, or simply smiling at one another since we couldn't hear. i left that afternoon with sore cheeks! i'm not saying the live music times aren't worth it if you're looking for live entertainment, but don't do it if'n you're looking to chat.

they've got some good items on the menu, and a few duds. they also just switched chefs at the beginning of this month, so who knows what will improve.

also FWIW, i really like their drinks menu. they have a couple of really tasty cocktails.

and i can't speak for brunch times, but otherwise i don't think reservations are de rigueur.

try it sometime. you may be pleased!
  • They just got a new Chef starting in January.
    The eggs benedict are incredible.
I agree with the live music being to loud but other than that its very recommendable.

Downside is, you might meet me sitting at the bar.....
  • Thanks - I'll definitely head back there but will give Sundays and Thursdays a miss.... looking forward to trying those cocktails!
  • I would always rather go to BarBQ
  • BarBQ is GREAT. best bourbon selection of any place i know. food is really tasty -- i'm a big fan of their brisket. but BarBQ is really a bar that serves food. nuthin wrong with that, to be sure, and sometimes that's exactly what i'm looking for. but other times i like so sit down at a restaurant for dinner with a menu that appeals to all sorts of tastes, not just someone looking for tasty 'cue. and sometimes i like to eat with dishes and silverware, not paper trays and plastic forks. i'd say both eateries have their merits, but you can't really compare one with the other.

bottom line suggestion to FurryGB: now you have TWO places to try :)
