  • visually, aurally-- in fact in all five sensory ways this new place satisfies. Beautifully done and without the overbearing pretense of some of the other new places that have popped up on on Vanderbilt over the last two years. Worth the wait. A 40 Year Veteran of this evolving little town.
  • Subject: Why is this Zaytoon's different than all other Zaytoon's?

I got the 411 on their liquor license. The myrtle and smith st. Zaytoon'ses are BYOB, but this one sells fairly inexpensive beer and wine. The owners are apparently observant muslims, and won't profit from the sale of liquor, so at the Vanderbilt operation they've outsourced the liquor license to someone else. Win-win, as it were.

It's nearly identical to the other two, which (I think) don't have gardens, but they all have some of the best middle eastern food in NYC. And now only 1.5 blocks from home! I've been three times since they opened.
  • I got myself some lunch there yesterday....it was good. Not great, but good. Lamb sandwhich and lentil soup. Soup wasn't hot enough, but that pita made up for it. But they have earned innumerable points with me because a cd of Israeli/Hebrew music was playing while I ate lunch. At a middle eastern food restaurant owned by observant Muslims! Made me feel hopeful, in some small way.....and definitely plan to go back. Great to finally have a decent place in the neighborhood for lunch especially, where you can get out under $10 and still get a filling meal.
  • Does anyone have their phone number handy? I assume the menu's the same for takeout as the other locations, but they don't have this new one up on Menupages.com yet.

Ordered in last night, it was chicken Schwarma, a pizza, spinach pie and a Tabouleh salad. Why all the Hype??? Everyone here has been so excited by what??? Another mid eastern restaurant??? Their quality is no better than Olive vine, if nor less. The Schwarma was bland, the chicken had no flavor whatsoever, i had to put a couple of spices and hot sauce to make it edible, the pita bread was cold as if taken out of a bag that was bought at met food. The Pizza fared no better, the dough was under cooked, it stuck to the paper on the bottom, afetr i ate it i almost threw up so i am not getting that again. The spinach pie was lovely, very warm full of yummy spinach and cheese, the tabouleh was a disaster it had so much parsley that i thought it was closer to rabbit food, it had like 3 or 4 pieces of tomatoes and a scallion here and there but mostly PARSLEY!!! SO KNOCK YOURSELVES OUT GUYS....
  • Kaki, I'm so glad you still know where the exclamation point and caps lock keys are.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't know of any other Middle Eastern places over on this side of Flatbush. Olive Vine isn't an option for many of us further east. That's why I'm excited about it, plain 'n' simple.
  • We found it yummy and reasonably priced. Will definitely add it to the rotation!

    :P

  • Went on Saturday. The food was awesome. The beer was cold. I couldn't even finish it all (I was starved and ate too fast)! This is a great addition to the neighborhood because it's isn't fried crap and it's still priced within reason. I'm already dreaming about when I'll go back next. =)

I don't think you can judge a restaurant's quality if you order delivery. And there is no comparison to Olive Vine, which is terrible.
