Considering Moving to Park Slope!
Hey Everyone!
I currently live in Orlando, FL but am preparing to make a move up to New York and I'm trying to decided the best place to live (in my price range of course!). I don't plan on moving for at least another year so I can finish up my degree.
I found some information on Park Slope and it looks like a very quaint and pretty place to live! But I've found some differing information. One site said that real estate is mostly all in the millions, while another said you could buy a condo from $153! Quite the EXTREME difference if you ask me. SO I thought getting an insiders opinon would totally help!
I'd probably be going back and forth to Manhattan constanly for auditions and such, so is there adequate forms of transportation to and from?
If I end up settling there I'd probably be having kids, so how are the school systems (Anything has to be better than florida's educational system!)
Really any information you guy could hook me up with would be great appreciated! Thanks again!

You should probably rent first before buying anything - see if you like living in the NYC area before settling here. Any condo that costs $153K is most likely not in Park Slope or anywhere near it.
Transportation to Manhattan is fine, there are a number of subway lines that run thru Park Slope. Takes anywhere from 15 minutes to get to downtown to about 45 minutes to get to midtown.
Start saving your cash now for the move, you'll need plenty of it here. -
I agree; find an apartment in any of Brooklyn's brownstone neighborhoods (Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Carroll Gardens), then start exploring. All are expensive, with perhaps more bargains in Prospect Heights. Housing ranges from single family brownstones; small, older rental buildings or condos with 6 or 8 units; pre-war elevator buildings (especially in Brooklyn Heights and near Prospect Park in Park Slope); and in the last few years, many new condo buildings. You can find a studio for a few hundred thousand, 3 bedrooms are a million and up. This is very roughly speaking. All of the neighborhoods have leafy brownstone blocks, parks, decent subway access to Manhattan, and a neighborhoody feel. Park Slope has some great shopping and restaurants; it also has the advantage of its proximity to Prospect Park and the borough's great cultural institutions. It also has some good public schools - many families make it a point of living in the 321 school district. However, MS 51 is one of the few good middle schools in the Slope (but the whole middle school situation is iffy in NY no matter where you are). People who live in other parts of Brooklyn will extol the qualities of their respective neighborhoods. So you have a lot to learn, but once you get here, you'll also have a lot of choices and options to pursue. Good luck!

wow thanks guys
I most def have a lot of exploring ahead of me. I've been to Brooklyn once but it was mostly only in passing just to see it so I'm not familiar at all with what neighborhoods are which and where the good (safe) places to live are. But I'm sure I'll learn evetually. I have a couple of friends that live in Manhattan and some in Harlem and I'm sure they can help me out too
THanks again for the advice!!
