i was finally approached by one of these kids leaving keyfood last night. it actually reminded me of those folks who stand on every corner on 7th ave asking you to sign there clipboard for whatever the "cause" of the day is. expect in this case he wanted money. fuck it, i gave him a dollar for effort.

blah once you gave in, he'll harassed twenty other guys after this. if in another world where you didn't give him the money. he would of went back to school and study and work hard and became a doctor!!!

I'm glad someone mentioned the LeGrand scam family. I live a few blocks away from that building, and there are frequently dozens of women dressed up as nuns and dozens of children also constantlly hanging out outside and making a huge racket with Jesus singing and loudspeakers in the street. It's a wierd, scary and obviously fraudulent situation. I've seen the same "nuns" panhandling in Park Slope on numerous occasions. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some of those teens were scamming in basketball or baseball guises. It's what they do and have done, for decades.

That whole building is seriously creepy. I won't even walk by it.

there's a number of kids hanging out at the Atlantic mall asking for donations
one kid came up asking for money -- when i asked for I.D. the kid said he'd have it next week

i wished him good luck and to not get in trouble

i wished people didn't give money to the mob of panhandlers hanging outside the subway station on Flatbush + 7th{outside brooklyn billiards}

The LeGrand's are pretty notorious in the neighborhood, but many of the kids I grew up with have stories about how they made friends with one of the kids and were saved later on from getting beat up or mugged by the LeGrand clan. They were always notorious, but if you were friends with them they had your back in a big way.

Another funny thing is that Bishop LeGrand single-handedly tried to integrate the neighborhood. His "wives" were black, white, and asian, and the family always looked like the United Nations with kids of every size, shape and color.

They remind me of stories I've heard about gypsy clans or the Irish Travelers.

I get highly annoyed too but can't help but feel compassion like you lmboogie when it comes to the kids at least. I don't know many if any Parkslope kids whose parents would let them do this. The kids bug me far less than the guy who can sit in front of Ace all day asking me for money every single time I walk by - sometimes a few times a day. I want to clunk him over the head as I come off a sticky subway, carrying a heavy bag, perspiring, hungry, and irritable after a very very long day. I was just thinking...I don't know if this is the extreme, but in some cases, I've known kids to get a beating if they don't come home with some cash. A desperate situation but where are they supposed to go when they're 12?
