Bad Hours at the Bklyn Central Library

anyone else think it's a real shame that the central brooklyn library is closed on sundays? if you work M-F, as a great many people do, sunday is a perfect day to go to the library. i mean, i understand they can't be open every day, but sunday?!

also, anyone else notice that the library was closed on lincoln's birthday. this is lincoln, the guy who stayed up at night reading by candlelight. and the library is closed on the day commemorating his life?!

    The Sunday closings are most certainly budget considerations. Lincoln's birthday is a national holiday!!The staff needs to have some holiday time off.

    budget considerations i can understand. but how about closing shop on monday instead of sunday?

    i think it may go back to 7 days a week in the fall. i agree that it should be open sundays, but on the whole, i think it's more important that it be open on weekdays in the summer, to give out-of-school kids a safe place to hang out. it's quite busy (even with adults) in there on the weekdays.

    Sorry Lincoln's Birthday is not a national holiday. February 19th 2007 was Washington's birthday (observed)

    feel lucky. cause when i was a kid in brooklyn. most libraries were close 3 to 4 times a week!!!

    The Central Library will be open on Sundays when school starts again. But since this is a Park Slope forum, how about the hours at the PS branch? Did you even know that there is one? You could be forgiven for not knowing about it since even on Saturdays they are only open 11-3! Honestly, why even bother opening for 4 hours? And most weeknights they are closed by 6pm, making it impossible for most Manhattan 9-5ers to stop by after work. Therefore I have to shlep ALL the way to Eastern Parkway....

    If I had a vote in the matter, I'd say keep the Central Library open seven days a week during the summer. Just the Central Library, if the budget allows. Also, if the ventilation's working all weekend, maybe the building won't be so skanky and stuffy on Monday.

    The PS branch really is sad. It's hardly ever open and the collection's slim. If you look at the "New Fiction" section, there's a lot of chick lit/borderline erotica. The building is a rundown Carnegie that could look great with proper care. It could be so much more. They don't even have a drop-off box.

    Here's a really great thing, though. You can go online - http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org - and log in with your library card. Then you can order books from ANY branch for pickup at the one that's closest to you. You can browse the catalog online, like shopping at Amazon. I do this all the time. I'm no fan of the PS branch as it currently stands, but I love having a nearby depot where I can pick up and drop off the books I really want.
