what do you think of these mod speakers?

Never heard 'em, but FWIW, Grundig made their name in tuners and portables, not speakers.
These are undoubtedly made for the more style-conscious; I would bet on relatively poor performance/dollar. Just depends on what you're looking for... I'm sure that they don't sound offensive to the average listener, but for $820, you can get speakers that sound quite good and that aren't dreadfully ugly. -

And that was in the 50s and 60s. I don't know if they ever really recovered from the invention of the transistor

unless you are way-into the aesthetics (they are cool looking), I'd stay away from them. Even with an oold quad system, the "all around" sound of the globes are pretty cave like, and I don't mean cozy. Even modern orb speakers are wacky (tired a micro pair for the studio...returned them).
Of course, If I did not know you were are audiophile-arcane, then what the heck.

Are you going to make me wax poetic on the various virtues of valves? :drunken:

Oh sure, we love our valves... but I don't know if anyone has a system that's entirely free of transistors. Haven't seen a valve TV or a valve radio in a while. Theoretically, someone might be able to build a valve DVD player, but I doubt I'd be able to house both it and the technicians in my apartment.
