A word of advice to all the NEW bedstuy'ers — Brooklynian

A word of advice to all the NEW bedstuy'ers

Subject: A word of advice to all the NEW bedstuy'ers

I have lived here for the past three years with my two school aged children. I love my neighborhood. Yes, there is crime. Yes, there are gunshots. Yes, its not really quiet at night. But I knew what I was getting into when I signed my lease.

I live in the Putnam/Throop area. I have seen over the past 3 years - a surge of artsy white hipster kids moving in - waltzing down the street as if they owned the neighborhood, as if they've been there for years.

Word of advice, hipster kids with mom and dad supporting them - You are a target and the gentrification that happened in Williamsburg/Fort Greene/Clinton Hill will take years, more years than you think - I would like to say around 2010 to be fully gentrified. Which I think is an absolute sin.

Gentrification doesnt do any good but give white people another place to live and take over. Where do you all expect the people that originate from these neighborhoods to go when their 1br rent goes from 700 a month to 1500 a month or MORE?

I dont mind seeing cafes and hipster type establishments going up in my neighborhood, but it takes away from the charm that makes BedStuy - BedStuy.

I know all of my neighbors, young and old. Ive given nothing but respect to everyone on my block. If you really think you are "part of the hood" youre not. Why dont I see any of you at the block parties? I was there with my two kids, we were the only white people there, and we were welcomed with open arms because I have established a relationship with the people in my neighborhood.

So do me a favor, young, white, hipsters who I see roaming the streets lost and clutching their purses at 9pm scared senseless of the people out on the street - Dont act like you own this hood - You dont.

  • how original. a guest posting thinly veiled anti-gentrification rants

there's like 12 of these already. there's nothing new here.
  • Subject: Whats your point?

Thinly veiled? How so? Im one of the only white girls on the block that you will see helping the blind man that lives around the block across the street or cleaning up the garbage can that fell on my sidewalk or giving the neighborhood kids some bubbles to play with on my stoop.

The "NEW" white people moving in dont want anything to do with the neighborhood - oh wait, yes they do. They want the cheap rents.

Youre not even in BedStuy, so whats your deal?
  • ^wow, sweeping generalizations there...

You're one of the ONLY white girls on the block to do this? Clearly you need to come to my block because we have a whole building of white (and other color) girls (and boys) helping eachother and our neighbors. I have a great relationship with my neighbors both in and outside of my building, and I've seen nothing but positive attempts at interaction from everyone that I know within the neighborhood...I've also seen a ton of young black males catcalling me a "cracker bitch" when I try to walk to the grocery store.
I want tons to do with the neighborhood, but I also don't like being verbally abused when I leave my house. I don't scream racial slurs at my black neighbors, so how come they're allowed to scream them at me? Because they lived on the block first? That makes tons of sense.
  • Have you ever approached the people calling you a "cracker bitch"? I have.

When I first moved here, I was called everything from Snow White to Cracker Bitch. One time I turned around and approched the person and asked them, "Why did you call me that?" They shut up really quick, and it wasnt because I was intimidating them, it was because they didnt have a good answer I assume. Not really sure.

Point is - People who have lived here their entire lives are allowed to feel however they want about white middle class yuppies moving in and taking over what they have created and turning it into something that is contrived and common. If you were living in East BumbleFuck PA on your farm, living the life that you created and enjoyed no matter how simple or boring it seemed to others, wouldnt you be the slightest bit pissed off if a bunch of East LA gangmembers moved in and started blasting loud music, hangin on the corner till 4am, etc.

The tables turned would suck huh? Perspective my friend, perspective.
  • I'm with you, Boygabriel. This might be the most unoriginal post since the internet was invented.

Keep moving, folks. Nothing to see here.
  • silly and useless. lol. foolish OP.
  • Black Hipsters get a free pass? LOL
  • Ill say this - and then I will move on.

When I first moved here, I posted on BedStuyonline, and ranted about all of the gunshots and the kids out on the corner blasting music and being loud at all hours of the night too. What it all boils down to....why are you complaining? You knew what you were getting yourself into right? This isnt PARK SLOPE! OR are you really truly trying to change it and make it YOUR hood? Scares me to think that people my age (31) are really this eager to make this hood another Pslope or (god forbid) Williamsburg.

Is that what you really want? ANOTHER Williamsburg? All of the realtors on CL always post their apartments "East Williamsburg" to draw in the hipsters..... Gag.

Doesnt matter what color you are - you move into the hood and try to change it and make it your own - youre still a scumbag.

You seemed to emphasize "White" and "white" and "white" again and again in your posts. Thanks for the clarification.

Call me crazy, but these were YOUR words:
a surge of artsy white hipster kids moving in . . .

Gentrification doesnt do any good but give white people another place to live and take over. . .

we were the only white people there, and we were welcomed with open arms because I have established a relationship with the people in my neighborhood. . .

So do me a favor, young, white, hipsters who I see roaming the streets lost and clutching their purses at 9pm scared senseless of the people out on the street - Dont act like you own this hood - You dont
Race doesnt matter, right? So dont get on my back for pointing out the fact that your original post seems to indicate that race is the only thing that matters. Thats all.
  • Right, because the only race of people that seem to be coming into these neighborhoods are native american indians, right. Come on now, stop being so freakin PC and realize the truths of this all.
  • danadaisys wrote: Right, because the only race of people that seem to be coming into these neighborhoods are native american indians, right. Come on now, stop being so freakin PC and realize the truths of this all.
*sigh* Stay with me here. Race doesnt matter (remember?), so who cares what race the newbies are? If their attitude sucks, deal with that. I know a number of black hipsters who have bought houses in BS. If their attitude sucks, then this thread is about them too.

Anyhow. The new Guvna will bow out now and let this continue along its natural course. Enjoy . . .
  • There's an awful lot of superiority flying around for someone who has lived in the neighborhood for a whopping three years. I've been here a year, does that give me the right to pick on the people that just moved in upstairs? For the record, they're black.
  • In January of 2006, three months after you moved to Bed Stuy (where I had been living for four years) you said that you were going to break your lease and move out of Bed Stuy because you were so upset after incident where you and your boyfriend, in a cab, were yelled at by some kids who demanded to "see your 'hood pass". You said "I cant even have my 13yr old go next door to get milk alone. I cant live like this" (sic).

When the kid yelled at you, you quote yourself as explaining that you live in the neighborhood and trying "to reassure him that we are cool people", telling him “baby, we aren’t THOSE types of people, relax!!” which doesn’t sound particularly respectful to me.

And back then you said of people hanging out outside bodegas “I still don’t understand why people around here do that, is that fun or something?? In the COLD?!...” and “Do these people enjoy living in crime ridden areas? drugs? murder? rape? etc etc??????? So if a few white people move in and make it a smidge more safer, that’s a BAD THING?!?!??!” (sic).

I’m glad things have gotten better for you and you decided to stay in the neighborhood. I was rooting for you.

But now, why are you so angry at the “artsy white hipster kids” who you describe as either “waltzing down the street as if they owned the neighborhood, and had been there for years” or as “roaming the streets lost and clutching their purses at 9pm scared senseless of the people out on the street”?

Where is your empathy now? What makes you think that you are not also one of those white hipsters, eclectic-looking with funky ($52 Williamsburg haircut) hair, tattoos, and piercings? Back then you said “I actually pride myself in not being a racist…” and “Who are WE to judge anyone?”. What changed?

Danadaisy, it wasn’t so long ago that we were consoling you, telling you not to give up, telling you not to judge the whole neighborhood because of a few bad apples, encouraging you. I’m glad that things have gotten so much better for you in the past couple of years and that you finally feel more at home. I’m going to give all of the newcomers, of every race and class and manner of dress, the same benefit of the doubt that I gave you when you first moved in.

When the guys on the street disrespect you by calling you "cracker bitch" it is not racial; when I was growing up I had friends that would curse girls out for not responding to their calls, and these guys are doing the same thing if you were black and didn't respond the same guys would call you a "black bitch" or some other unfriendly term. FYI, when my friends cursed the girls out I use to tell them very sarcastically "thanks for messing it up for me" or the next guy for that matter. 8)

oh snap! Danadaisy just got punked!
  • I really can't believe the attitude of the original poster. I've lived in Bed-Stuy for 3 years. I can only speak for myself (unlike the original poster, who thinks she knows what every other white person in the neighborhood is doing). I'm friendly with my neighbors and have tried to have a positive impact on my neighborhood. This is my neighborhood too - even if I've only been here a few years. I grew up in New York City and I don't run around saying that everyone who didn't is just visiting. I don't think it adds any value to make blanket statements about any people living in Bed-Stuy based on race alone. It wasn't just what she said - it was the tone of how she said it.
  • Dnadaisys, drop the attitude.
  • i'm white, and sadly, i know i'm part of the problem - because when white people move in, rents go up. of course, i can't afford it anymore when the rents go up, and then i have to move and become part of the problem somewhere else. *sigh* i hope i don't have to leave bed-stuy anytime soon, because i just got here and i like it (having never been called "cracker bitch!" LOL). but i know how it works. the REAL problem underlying all of this (aside from real estate racism) is the lack of affordable housing in New York!
  • I want a pass on this one, but isn't "cracker bitch" and "cracker ass cracker" some funny ass shit; it's like calling the president names, he's still in charge. When I call someone a "cracker ass cracker" it is so ridiculous I can't help but laugh, and I never said it to anyone just about them and then I bust out laughing like when Chris Rock says it.
  • As long as NYC remains such a hot commodity and people are dying to live here as much as they are, this will be the issue. Many people move to Bed Stuy because it IS the only place they can afford to live and still work and live in the city. What is so wrong with that? And, living here, these people want things in the neighborhood that would be resourceful to them, things that may fall under the umbrella of a 'hipster coffee shop' or perhaps a 'decent supermarket'. I don't think many people move into a neighborhood and intentionally want to make it what it is not, or change it into something entirely different. Most people just want to make their neighborhood 'better' ( even though whats better for some may not be better for all ). And, may I remind everyone that this is New York, and as much as a city of neighborhoods and ethnic enclaves as this is, communities are always changing. East New York was once Italian, and before that, Dutch. Harlem was once all African American. The LES was once mainly Jewish. So, unless you are a Native American robbed of your territory, I would say that no one really 'owns' a neighborhood. People change, neighborhoods change, and while it's important to hang on to our cultures and traditions that make us unique, if we are not open to sharing this with others and the possibility of newcomers, we're not doing much good for anybody.

Just a logistical question: How does one walk around, looking lost, clutching one's purse in fear, *and* strut around like they "own this hood," all at the same time? Sounds complicated, but I'd like to try.

Love the flowchart, by the way!
  • Best flowchart ever.

wait, are you saying i didn't use "oh, snap!" the right way??? Cause there are very few things that I'm proud of, but one of them is my ability to use "oh, snap!" in the correct manner.

No, no, I think you gave a marvelous demonstration of how to do it! :)

I had just seen that picture recently and couldn't resist posting it here.
