  • right? I read in another thread that there's a place near a bicycle shop that just opened up, but I don't know where that is.
  • Subject: coffee

yup, the new ice cream parlor on vanderbilt... just past bergen has been open this week. they have gorilla coffee and its cheaper than joyce.
  • ??????????????????

    The Usual?
    Deacon Blue?
    McDonalds on Atlantic and Vanderbilt?
  • that mcdonalds is the bomb.
  • I second Cheryl's!!! I go there every saturday morning. Only issue is that they open up around 9am Tues-Sunday and closed Monday! But, the bodega right next door to Cheryl's is pretty good in a pinch! Rocket Fuel ALL THE WAY!!!!

this is where i went this morning.

it's between bergen and dean on the west side of vanderbilt... near the bike shop and the laundromat.
  • I'm not about to walk for blocks to get a cup of coffee, I live near Joyce. I used to see Brooklyn Brown and the MUD truck near GAP, but haven't in a long while.

True, there is Cheryl's! I do like that place. Where's the Usual and Deacon Blue?
  • ...I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only person in the city who still makes her own coffee at home.

    I make my own
BOught a Cuissanart pot many years ago.. $100.. makes great hot coffee. I have an assortment of "to go" cups and insulated containers.. But coffee is a social experience for people in the hood and I understand why good places to hand and good coffee are essential.
  • The Usual is on Vandy, north of prospect... maybe even a little further - I forget. Deacon is on Prospect and Grand, just east of the Crown Chicken on Washington.

I make my own lattes at home every morning. Gorilla beans. It's good.
  • i keep meaning to buy myself a french press. i've been in "stop-in-joyce-tues-friday" mode ever since my coffee maker went to shit 3 months ago.
  • There's also Little Miss Muffins or whatever that is right before the 7th Avenue stop, next to the barber shop. Before the soda shop went in, that was where I'd get my coffee on the Mondays that Joyce's was closed.

The coffee isn't great, but it's not bad.
  • I make my own but want a place on Washington Avenue somewhere too.
Teddy's opens at 11am....Need a diner with Wi-fi- nothing fancy.

French press is the way to go for Regluar coffee:$12-$20 max (Ikea)
and for espresso, forget about those fancy machines that take up counter space, my Italian friends hipped me to this in college:

    These things are the BOMB!!!
  • they also make perfect cuban coffee. it's the only coffee creating device in my house.

Hey you should try Prospect Perk, it's on Sterling Pl and Flatbush. Great free trade coffee and nice people!

Give it a shot! I don't think they are ever closed!
  • buy gorilla (or damicos if you ever make it over to court st) and make it at home.
  • I need a new espresso machine... I'm STILL debating a super automatic or a manual... convenience vs. quality & sense of accomplishment/artistry... hmmm...
  • Sorry, but I hate the coffee at Prospect Perk. Do they have an espresso machine at the new ice cream place?

I second my fellow latina Alfy on that one. It's the only thing I have at home.
  • Joyce's hours are so terrible.

Third! But I'm lazy with buying beans.

I also own two French presses.

Hmm. Now if I get myself a good coffee tumbler to take on the train, I could make my own coffee and take it with me to work. I hear these mugs are awesome: http://www.igniteusa.com/autoseal.html

The PR restaurant above the Q on our side of Flatbush makes a killer PR/Capuccino and their regular is pretty tasty too/and strong.

not social, but guaranteed to wake you up with taste

Brooklyn without a bagel store? :?:
    Blasphemy.

A good old bagel store that serves coffee would be welcome on Washington and on Vanderbuilt.

It would make a fortune.
  • I think there is a bagel place on Washington near Bergen... but my roommate has said it isn't any good. There's also Bergen Bagels on Bergen and Flatbush.

Dude, what time? I'll take one too! =)
  • I second the Bagel/Coffee idea. Seriously. Or even Bagel/Chai. The hot chai latte at muddy waters sucks unless Ntozake makes it. Apparently none of her staff can figure out how to do it.

i like this one, from oxo -- i know staples was selling them for a while. http://www.oxo.com/OA_HTML/xxoxo_ibeCCtpOXOPrdDtl.jsp?a=b&item=48744

i can turn it upside down and nothing comes out; it's easy to clean; and it's small -- no handle. you just click a button on top to drink, so you can easily do it with the hand holding the cup. i find it keeps my coffee warm for about 2 hours.
