Shots fired Between Wash and Underhill (Sterling or Park Pl)

I am guessing others heard these shots at about 4:30am. I called 911 and a helicopter arrived about 20 minutes later. Does anyone know what happened, or if anyone was hurt?

  • I didn't hear the shots (I'm on Prospect Place), but I did hear and see the helicopter. Is it easier to send a helicopter, or were there also cop cars? It seems cars would be faster, the helicopter seemed to be focused on one area, then left.
  • My wife and I heard them around 4:30 am as well. 8 of them, one after the other. Then we heard what sounded like strange music. Then 3 more shots. We live on St.John's but, our bedroom is in the back of the building. They we're definitely near or on Sterling. We called the police. Let them know what's going on. I guess other people did the same, because at 5:45 the helicopter came over and hovered for 5 or 10 minutes. Didn't hear any ambulances. Hope no one was hurt.

I nice quite morning shot to hell by gun fire.
  • I just made a pot of coffee, no going back to sleep now! That's a lot of gunshots...
  • I was also woken by the shots, along with what sounded like laughing and conversation by the shooters--sounded less like a violent incident than a group of guys just firing guns for the hell of it.

A few minutes later my buzzer rang, and four cops showed up at my building. They informed that an 80 year old woman on Underhill Ave.--not sure of the address--was shot through her window--the bullet grazed her arm, and she sounds alright. "Another day in Brooklyn," one of the cops said. They used my roof to look for the possible suspects (hence the buzzer ringing), but didn't seem to find anything. While they were on the roof, the helicopter showed up.

Suffice to say, this is pretty damn scary.
  • Scary stuff. I hope the older womanis okay, when will people realize that firing a gun "just for fun" can hurt people.
Glad to hear that they sent cars as well as the helicopter--it seemed over the top and too long after the shots. BUt any response is better than nothing!
  • We heard two young men shouting in a very violent angry way at about 4:20 am as they were walking by our place on Sterling. That was what woke us up. About 10 minutes later we heard a series of shots, and then another series of shots after another gap of a few minutes. We called the cops as well. I hope that the 80 year old woman is OK, and that nobody else got hurt.
  • I heard about 6-8 shots, followed by 2 series of 3-4 shots at 430. Then twenty minutes later, at around 450, I heard three series of 2-3 shots. Then, at 530 am, the helicopter came. It definitely sounded like it was near Sterling/Butler Place.
  • I definitely woke up to about 8 shots in a row. And then a few minutes later I heard 1 louder shot. Couldnt tell the direction but I was hearing them from the back of a building on Sterling b/w wash and underhill.
  • I'm on Sterling between Wash/Underhill, but totally slept through the whole thing. My wife heard the chopper, though.

This morning around 8am there were still about 10 cops on Sterling and Underhill...looks like a window was broken on a Sterling brownstone that the cops were standing in front of...

That must be were the 80 year old woman who was hit in the arm lives.

F*cking Monsters! Please drive out to a secluded spot and fire your guns at each other there. Don't shoot up the neighborhood.

    A*holes!

  • Sterling 2000- That window has been broken for months, I keep waiting for the buildings owner to fix it......
  • I heard the shots also; the second set sounded louder than the first.

gothamist maps shows a shooting at 169 Underhill at 5:18am.
  • Not for nothing, but we're kinda nestled between Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. Regardless I hope nobody was hurt.
  • i live on underhill and initially thought the shots were coming from sterling, between underhill and washington. i first heard 6 six shots around 4:30 am, when i called 911. a couple of other rounds followed between then and when the helicopter arrived at 5:30.

the detectives i spoke to this morning told us that there was someone (they said in the plural) shooting from a rooftop on sterling. i'm thinking that they must have been aiming into the yards between underhill, sterling, washington and park place, because that's where the police helicopter was looking.

the helicopter was right above our building around 5.30am. it was shining its spotlight all through the yards, including our own yard a few times. at that point, there were a few police cars and a police van along underhill, along with a number of cops standing on the street.

they said that the woman who was shot on underhill was shot through a window. fortunately, the detective said she was ok.

    a strange morning, indeed.
  • oh, and i heard people yelling just before the shots were first fired. stupid bad dream had already woken me up.
  • weird. I didn't hear a thing. but my bedroom faces the airshaft behind washington closer to st. johns than sterling --- not the backyard. so street noise doesn't generally wake me. while I was coming home around midnight, this all just makes me more happy that I took a cab from cattyshack and didn't walk. yikes.

Does anyone know if this is a random type shooting or if they were aiming for anyone in particular?
  • i heard everything. they sounded like they were just being rowdy. i think hitting the woman in her window was accidental, she went to the window to look out.
but who knows what was going on among them. it sounded like a few people.
  • jesed, they didn't say anything about why they were shooting.

it's pretty scary, because my boyfriend got up to close our window just after the initial shots. he somehow managed to do so without lifting up the blinds.

what the hell is wrong with people that they would do this? frustrating.
  • Well, there's been some crazy things happening this summer. Just totally senseless stuff. I hope the police force can make some progress in figuring out what's going on with this bunch of people.
  • i heard that building with the broken window is "abandoned" and the guy is squatting there.
  • I heard the shots in my sleep and it made me have the weirdest dream, then the 'copter woke me completely and I thought the world had ended.

Oh, ok...I never noticed it before.
  • At least two people were taken in about 6:30 this evening though maybe only for questioning in a controlled environment so I won't say more. Thankfully, cops are still on the case. I've lived on this block (Sterling between Washington & Underhill) for 23 years, and this may be only the third or fourth time I've heard or heard of shots in the vicinity.
  • there were police still there at 11:15 when I was on my way home from the happy hour tonight
  • Saw cops leaving a brownstone on Sterling near Underhill about 10 minutes ago, while I was walking my dog.

Ive lived on washington for 5 years and Ive heard shots at least 5 times. Maybe its because Im on a more major road or somthin.
  • Yeah, being on Washington probably makes a difference.
  • Subject: shots fired,muggings etc.

you know, it is suggested always that you move in a neighborhood and get to know your neighbors. the more i read these blogs and comments on the neighborhood i have inhabited for many many years, it is disgusting to know that all of you newbies moved here with change in mind and not the right kind. shooting is never right and that goes without saying, but no one is an authority on anyone or has the right to accuse anyone as so many did to the cops sitting in front of the house on sterling pl this week. In lieu of many gun shootings, robberies, muggings,it seems this has not happen more frequently than in the last yr when more people moved in. Another suggestion keep your racist undertones to yourself(are this too will awaken as another crown heights situation )-the neighborhood was always mixed and a very nice place to live until this new crop of you turned up with such negative vibes and more dog shit than anyone can stand, that you should leave if your so frightened and go to a suburb of which this is not. keep in mind it is still Brooklyn-r u safer-No your not.

Tipster, if you'd really been reading these boards so much you'd know that not everyone on this board is a "newbie."

Please take a moment to read the rules, which are linked at the top of every page.

Your post didn't break the rules, but it doesn't set the friendly tone we'd like to have here. Please bear in mind that many, many of our longtime readers and posters are indeed native Brooklynites, including some of the mods.

Very frequently, people come to the board, guns blazing, to tell users what's what, and it's not very effective or original -- nor a way to make friends (which is a great side-effect of posting here).

I hope you'll keep this in mind on your next visit.
