How Worried Should I Be About Parade? — Brooklynian

How Worried Should I Be About Parade?

I recently moved into a building on Eastern Parkway (at Franklin) and I have a wife and 5-month-old daugther. How worried should I be about the parade and the Friday night parties? Should I clear the family out?

I don't want to sound like a paranoid gentrifier, I like my neighbors and have never had any trouble. But being new to the neighborhood I'm not sure what to expect.

Comments

  • it will certainly be loud. i had a great time at the parade last year, and witnessed nothing distressing. but i wouldn't expect a good night's sleep for a baby.
  • As sweet tea said, you should expect it to be loud, especially if you have windows that look out onto the Parkway.

That having been said, its pretty easy to ignore whatever bit of drama occurs should you choose to. The parade doesn't start too early so if you really want to get up and leave the neighborhood, you can. And the cops and sanitation are usually good about getting the parkway cleaned up and opened to traffic following the parade so you should be okay getting back home and in the house at a reasonable hour.

If you plan on going out an enjoying the parade, be aware of the fact that there are a lot of people and it gets crowded so you may want to leave the stroller at home.
  • Is it actually loud at Franklin and Eastern Pkwy outside of parade hours?
The overnight J'Ouvert is pretty far away, and that's unamplified pan playing anyway.

I love the parade, and have had a great time there for years. You're lucky to have a close seat, with an easy escape whenever you get tired. Enjoy your new nabe!
  • Is the parade Saturday?

If so, am I in deep shit moving that day?

What time does the parade start?????
  • i would like to know what day too cause i have people moving in and out that day in my building :(.

I can't remember for sure, but I think that they had Washington blocked to cross-traffic at Prospect last year... Yeah, it might be a bear, if that's the day...

it's not j'ouvert, it's the parties people have in conjunction with the whole weekend. as a plus, i have found that by the evening following the main parade, most people are too pooped to party.

Parade is next Monday, Labor Day. We still have a whole week to go.
  • The parade is awesome. There is violence associated with it, but it's mostly not at the parade itself, and it's minimal when you consider how many people are actually there. It's definitely worth checking out. Great food, music, and an overall really friendly vibe. There's no reason to hide! But I wouldn't bring a car anywhere near here on Sunday night or Monday.
  • If crowds bother you watch out everybody comes to the pkwy, black, white, green, orange, purple, etc! if they don't bother you then you will love it. the noise is limited to the hours of the parade. police will be everywhere. most people are in a good mood. traffic will be terrible .
we should have a thread about how a spent the labor day weekend afterwards. I always have a parking troubles. good luck
  • Yeah, it's usually loud all weekend, and *really* crowded the day of the parade. But people are generally in great spirits, and if you have a good view of Eastern Parkway from your apartment that'll be great for parade-watching. And there's always some killer food available in the booths!

Armchair, your building is far enough away that it shouldn't be any problem for your tenants -- just tell them to avoid Eastern Parkway.
  • Thanks for responding, everyone. I think we'll try and stick it out. My biggest concern is about noise from parties the night before, but I guess I'll just buy some earplugs and deal with it.
  • Subject: the parade

it's loud as can be ... being in an apt. is great and there should be no problems, but my first year here someone came into my front yard (opened the gate) and peed _ actually two people did that. People will sit on your stoop, which is ok, as long as they are not smoking weed. One year people were just sitting on my car, and when I asked them to move they had an attitude. I am leaving, as I do every year. I also pray for rain.
Also, if you have to get on the subway plan in advance because they can block off the subway entrances ... it is very difficult to move around after like, 3 pm. Good luck!
  • Yeah, it gets loud, but most people are there to have fun. The costumes are fantastic, the music is great and the vibe is friendly, and there's lots of great food, too. It not called Carnival for nothing. That is the atmosphere and the spirit. It's the same in Rio, Toronto, the Caribbean, New Orleans and Venice. Go with the flow and enjoy. It's only the weekend, the sequins wash away in the rain, and it's back to everyday.
  • i believe the parade is on monday actually - which is unfortunate since that's when most people whoa re going out of town for the w/e return for work the next day. According to the WIADCA site it starts at 8am at EP and Utica and goes as far down as the flatbush extension - that leaves me thinking that EP should be nicely cleared out before the day is over - anybody else agree? most of the parties and events seem to be down at the Museum Grounds near Myrtle ave.

i've been told that in past years the police will do a friendly tow of your car to a neighboring area - but then you have to go hunt it down... any violence to property that we should be worried about?
  • I live right on E.P. near Franklin. Last year, on Monday the crowds were PACKED in tightly, right up to the front door of my apartment building - literally. Had to ask people to step aside in order just to get the front door open!!

People were standing in my front yard, drinking beer and hanging out, all day monday and late into the night. The crowd thinned out by evening, but there were still people hanging out drinking beer and eating. The disgusting thing was that last year, there was no security gate on the entrance to the courtyard of our building. People were going in there all day monday and into the night to pee and do who knows what else. We could see them in the courtyard peeing. Sometimes there were like four people lined up at once peeing in there. By the end of the night, the ground was totally saturated. It was disgusting. For the next few days, until a good rain came, it smelled so bad that we had to keep the windows closed on that side of the apartment.

This year we have a security gate. If it stays locked, I'm hopeful that the courtyard won't turn into a public bathroom.

Just in case, I'll be armed with a supersoaker  Might even fill it with water dyed with food coloring. Gotta defend your territory, ya know...
  • Does the city put port-o-potties at these parades? If so then that is inexcusible. But telling the local perpetrators that is a different and possibly dangerous act.
