That depends, can autobody shops be gentrified? What is Aussie cuisine btw? I picture it as nothing more than kangaroo steaks and vegemite on a stick. -
Kangaroo is very tasty. No idea what else will be on their menu but looking fwd to finding out

There's an Aussie place called "Eight Mile Creek" in the city and another one (on Ave C) whose name I can't remember.
Here's the EMC menu:

Yum. I eat a lot of ostrich. I buy it from the Key Food on Fifth Ave. The only place I've been able to find Kangaroo in the US is at Long Tan... -

Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,
"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,
"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,
"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover." -

I did a little investigating about the new restaurant on 4th ave and found out it is being opened by the woman who owned Smith St Kitchen on Smith St in Cobble Hill. If it is half as delicious as Sm St Kitchen was, I am there. I was sooo sad when that place closed. It was amazingly delicious!! -

Yeah, I had a kangaroo loin of some sort there. It was good - a lot like beef, but a tad gamey. -

"Sheep Station" opened its bar on Friday, September 22, 2006, and the Restaurant will open on Monday, October 2, 2006. It's on the South East corner of 4th Avenue and Douglas. -
"Sheep Station?" Why not "Kangaroo Cucina," Platypus Palate," et al.

That's a very appetizing name for a restaurant! I'm curious to see what'll be on the menu. -
^^^ barbecued sheep

I had a cocktail at this place on the way home from BAM...
nice space (classy use of industrial materials), nice staff (from Oz and Montreal), nice party room in the back with a fireplace. Neighborhood place it most reminds me of: Long Tan.
Kitchen to be open in a week or so -- burgers, oysters, fish, sausage rolls, meat pies. I forget which beers were on tap, but there's a variety. They're talking about showing futbol and rugby during the day...
AND they have Hendrick's gin.
as for BAM
"Little Miss Sunshine" was GREAT. -
Australian Rules football?

Went there last night. Nice atmosphere, though a limited menu. Fuller review, if you will excuse the plug, here:

Aussie cuisine is an invention of theme restaurants and bars around the world in order to sell whatever. It is unknown inside Australia and would generally be considered tacky and UnAustralian.
However the last 10-15 years you have been able find some of the world's best cuisine inside Australia for two reasons:
1) After New York, Sydney and Melbourne are among the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, with large Italian, Greek, Turkish, Lebanese, Yugoslavian, Chinese, Malay, Thai, Korean, Indonesian, Cambodian and Vietnamese populations, and smaller numbers from just about everywhere.
2) With only 20 million people in an area the size of the lower 50 states plus enormous territorial waters from Antartica to the equator, there is a plentiful variety of cheap, fresh and exotic produce from all climates, marine and terrestrial. The seafood market in Sydney for example is unparalleled.
So there's a lot of fusion and experimentation happening besides all the traditional cuisines. -
I should have mentioned, the co-owner/chef is a woman from Montreal.
But, guuurrrrrl, she can cook!
And Australian cuisine doesn't exist anyway, right?

No problem. Canadians are honorary Australians and vice versa.
But, guuurrrrrl, she can cook!
Legal immigration to Canada is 250,000 p.a. per 32,000,000 or 0.8% p.a.
19% of Canadians are foreign born.
Actually, since we invaded Iraq and signed a bilateral FTA, Americans are honorary Australians and vice versa too.pitu wrote:
Well, there's always Margaret Fulton... she's the undisputed matriarch of 'traditional' Australian cuisine. Her cookbook was first published in 1968, a year after Australia's version of the 14th amendment, and five years before the official end of the White Australia policy.
And Australian cuisine doesn't exist anyway, right?

Sheep Station sounds more like a Scottish brothel than an antipodean restaurant. Wonder if they'll have frangers in the loo?

I agree, and I've got some ideas about how to get more quantitative. Maybe you could register, and we could ask for a topic split and move this to The Lounge or New York & Beyond rather than continue to use the PS Sheep Station thread?
This is, honestly, all very interesting, imo,
doctorj and guest,
I agree it was time for the ethnic diversity discussion to split off on its own, and into the Randomstuff: NY and Beyond
you'll find it HERE:

The taps are lousy, for whatever reason, though they do have an okay selection. The sandwiches however are pretty delicious. Their hamburger is served with fried egg and pineapple. Kinda pricey.
-
To expand: the lamb sandwich was also strong, if less extravagant. Fries were nothing special. Beer was a little bit flat here and there, and in my estimation they only have one decent tap (Sierra Nevada, others included Stella, Bluepoint, #9) – actually something tasted off about the beer other than just flatness, which is disturbing. Also, our Parisian friend was disappointed that the oysters were not served with bread, the rest of us just thought they were nothing special.
The pineapple on the burger though is kind of awesome.
Howdy, Stranger!
