L M Foreign Cars!!!

So I scoured these particular boards for a "reputable" auto mechanic for about a week (on and off of course) and I came across this shop that seemed to have the most consistence when it came to good reviews. I have a used VW passat and I've noticed a lot of other VWs and other foreign cars in the neighborhood, so I thought this thread would be useful to others. I am extremely anxious when it comes to mechanics (that and doctors) so when I say that these guys were really awsome I'm not kidding - they were very accomodating and honest and I wasn't made to feel like a "dumb chick" either if I didn't understand something - a feeling I've gotten many a time before. They really are great and I'm so relieved to have found them! They are family owned, been in business for over 39 years, and aren't out to screw anybody over (at least from what I could observe and experienced), and they specialize in foreign cars which I think is important as the owner pointed different things out to me today, that a more general mechanic may not be aware of when working on a VW. Okay so for anyone who's been or will be looking for an auto mechanic here's my contribution. BTW thanks to everyone who put in their experiences - good and bad - so I knew where to stay away from and who else to consider :D
Here's their info:

  • What's with the spammy cut and paste?
  • Cookie stealer?
  • Hmmm, not exactly sure what you're talking about - I did cut and paste their website from another poster but that was it...
  • I deleted the dotted lines - is that what was "spammy"? I don't see how that word fits with what I'm not really sure what you were trying to say?
  • heights249 wrote: Hmmm, not exactly sure what you're talking about - I did cut and paste their website from another poster but that was it...
By spammy cut and paste, I mean that you cut and pasted something 6 months old from another forum that reads like spam, with no explanation.
  • Ok - like I said or "explained" I did search these boards for a week looking for an auto mechanic - so cutting and pasitng a website isn't to me a spammy offense that needed an "explanation". So whose thread read like spam - the original poster - because I actually didn't think that it did. If you're even implying that mine does that just pisses me off because I'm not about to "spam" anything. I'm a social worker not an auto mechanic, I make no money so I can't afford to take my car to a mechanic that I need to make homevisits to my clients and thus to do my job and thus get paid the little that I do to be honest and not rip me off. So when I found one I shared. My mistake. It really sucks that when someone finds something good to say about another company, shop, or anything people start throwing crap at you. Major problem on this board, and a reason I don't post that often. A simple thanks for the info would have been sufficient, but I guess some people just look for things to rag people on. Sorry for the rant, but you just really pissed me off for not even a good reason. It's not like we're talking the war or poverty - it's a freakin auto mechanic that happened to treat me decently.
  • I'm sorry if my questions are pissing you off. What do you mean "cut and pasting a website"? If this is your review, where did it come from originally? You cut and pasted a big block of text, including the original post header that showed that it was written in early January; just now you deleted that part. You're using the internet wrong and it's causing me distress.
  • Well I certainly wouldn't come on here and start hawking a particular auto mechanic. However, if you're looking for a good quantum mechanic, let me know.

I got this alpha emitter that I'm trying to model with a 1D particle-in-a-box and the WKB approximation but the tunneling probability isn't exponential with negative one over h-bar times the definite integral of the momentum equation in the box. And when I turn the steering wheel it makes this sound like "hamiltonian... hamiltonian". Any ideas?

Yeah, my cat went and got into this box. Can you help me with that?

I have a jetta and I've always taken my car for service at the dealer and never had one problem with the car. Supposedly it's more expensive, but still, no issues.
  • doublediamond wrote: Yeah, my cat went and got into this box. Can you help me with that?
You think you've got problems? A monkey somehow logged in under my username and got me branded a homophobe. What are the odds? :?

Yeah, an unsolicited recommendation in combination with the cut & paste aspect is enough to make you question the motive of the poster... There are at least a few threads on the topic of auto repair recommendations, adding to it probably would have been more effective.
  • Good Lord - here's the deal - I copied the website from the other poster - the actual part of my text that says the company's name and when you click on it it acts like oh a link to that particular website. Now when I did that I must not have been paying too close attention because I ended up copying more than the link - so when I pasted it the more that I wanted to copy also came along with the link - so then I deleted most of it except for what I thought was just the link. Apparently I did not delete all of it in my haste to get off the computer and on with my day. Now if I had I would not still be sitting here like an idiot defending something that to me was just my attempt to give a good place a shout out - which initially took like 2 minutes. Now yes, I could have added on to another post - how silly of me, I will from now on ask you how to post something before doing so. An unsolicited recommendation? Are you kidding me? This board is full of them - in my foolhardy opinion it used to be helpful when looking for something and/ or a service - what an idiot I am. Anyways, the term "hawking" is really disturbing as I do not just "hawk" things on people. I think people that do that for some sort of personal gain and not out of honesty is very disrespectful to a neighborhood board and I would never tell anybody to just go somewhere if my personal experience wasn't what it was. Why is it that the same people actually will take a topic and turn it into something assinine? That's my question - there have been several topics that seemed interesting and actually were for a little bit and then it turns ridiculous where there's no point in reading it because it then starts to sound like two or three people engaged in the same dumb jokes or banter. That said, hopefully I'm done with this.
  • h-249-- i appreciate your post and have noted the info on your mechanic for future reference. thanks for looking into this and for taking the time to let the rest of us know about your experience. a good mechanic is hard to find and word of mouth is the best way to do it. which, i happen to agree with you, is one of the better uses of this board.
  • heights249, I'm sorry this thread went the way it did. We frequently get posts from people who are shilling for a business they have some sort of interest in, and I think because of that some people are a bit hypervigilant about posts that don't read quite "right." If you're pasting in something from elsewhere, mentioning that you're doing so would help deflect that, I think. Regardless, it's clear your intentions were good here, and I'm sorry you were made to feel attacked about your post.

Everyone else: While I think it's great that folks are so vigilant at attempting to sniff out shillers and I know the mods and admins *very* much appreciate it when the regulars help out with keeping the boards in line, it's also pretty obvious that heights249 has been participating in discussions here for a while now (remember, you can always see how many posts a user has made on the left side of his/her posts) and isn't just someone who signed up for the sole purpose of publicizing this particular business. If you have doubts about what someone's saying, why not give the benefit of the doubt, ask nicely what's up, and maybe be a teench less quick to jump to conclusions about the whole thing -- especially when it's someone who's been posting for a while?

    What, like this?

Well, yeah. I don't know for sure if that post is a shill, but I'm much more suspicious of a new user posting something like this than I think we should be of somebody who's been participating for a while.

Of course, which is why I speculated that it may have been a case of someone having fun with a stolen cookie -

    You own a Quantum?
  • heights249, this is a great and very valuable post to have. Another good shop to check out may be Nok Auto Repair on St. Marks near Underhill. I have had very limited experience with them but the experience I had was positive. Anyone else?
  • After my favorite shop, Atlas on Vanderbilt closed last year, I pretty much avoid mechanics in Brooklyn. I drive my car upstate to Kingston, New York to Autopro. The owner and main mechanic, John Constable, knows everything about cars, builds them from the ground up, is honest and very reasonably priced. It's worth the 1.5 hour trip. Otherwise, if you are looking for a great mechanic in the city, Sam's Auto Body on 424 E. 10th in the East Village is excellent. One of the only honest shops in the city. They fix it right the first time and don't recommend needless repairs.
  • Ahhh, (big sigh of relief) - thanks for those of you who understood what I was trying to say and to get out to people - I feel much better after reading the new posts. Thank you. Oh and as for Nok - that was the next place on my list if the place I went to didn't work out. I did read some negative comments about them - hence their #2 position, but the good things that were said were really good comments. Again, thanks for understanding - to those of you that do - that my intentions were "pure" and yes, I've been with this board for a while. :D

Sorry that I called your review spammy.
  • I accept your sorry. I'm sorry I might have been a bit punchy with my replies...
