me, "oh yeah, what kind of dog?"
him," blue-nose pit. I have two. the female's pregnant. gonna have puppies soon. i wanna sell them make some silver."

there is a bunch of guys in prospect park that tries to sell puppies all the time.

I had a guy walk in to the store with a (too young) pit bull puppy in his arms, looking to sell it to me. It puts you in a tough position - part of you wants to buy it, just to get it out of the horrible situation it's in, but at the same time, buying it would only encourage them to breed more...

My idiot neighbor and her boyfriend recently bred the boyfriend's pit-bull mix bitch. I was working at home one day last week and the neighbor was out in front of her building all afternoon with the mom and puppies, asking everyone who walked past if they were interested in buying a (4-week-old!) pup: "200 for boys, 300 for girls." Presumably, the girls were more expensive because the buyers would then be able to start their own mini puppy mills.
So depressing and infuriating .... -
Yes, it made me so mad and sad, but I don't see how going into lecture mode could possibly change the guys mind.
There seems to be a big push to get people to adopt pets from shelters instead of buying them. Great, but I think we also need some kind of educational pr campaign to help people understand how their actions lead to all those pets ending up in shelters in the first place.
I don't understand how anyone can be so clueless, but it seems like there are lots of ignorant people out there who don't get that mating their unneutered pet dog is most likely just going to increase the population of unwanted dogs. And trying to sell puppies won't make them money when there is such a surplus of pit bull-type dogs in shelters already.
Grrr! -
There should be a license to breed animals and anyone without a license should be required to have their dogs and cats fixed. There are many reasons to spay/neuter, including health reasons. The city also needs to crack down on dog licenses, which would help with the breeding problem. I don't have any idea how they could monitor the cats though. But if one more person asks me if my pittie Ripley is "spaded", I'm going to scream. Especially when they ask when she's wearing her muzzle (the only thing that keeps her from eating food off the ground). For all they know she could be attacking small children left and right but they don't care since they like the way she looks.
I know she's not vicious but strangers don't. If you knew nothing about this dog would you want to breed her?
Ripley is spayed though, I want her around for as long as possible. And my answer to people who ask if she's fixed is usually, "Of course, there are tons of pits in shelters, why would I breed more?" -
Awww, lookit the little Hannibal Lecter doggie!
-
Heehee, that's what I call her when I'm not calling her pig!

Caseopele, your dog is cute as hell! (But no, I wouldn't want to breed her.)
For all they know she could be attacking small children left and right but they don't care since they like the way she looks.
Sad, but unsurprising. The same neighbor who was recently selling tiny puppies has expressed her jealousy and admiration of my dog for barking and growling her fool head off whenever somebody comes near my front window. (just for the record, this is not something I allow to go on very often; normally, if i'm out, the dog is shut in the quiet back half of my apt., where there's no "suspicious" noise to set her off.) When I noted that the dog's carrying on is a pain in the ass, the neighbor seemed surprised and told me she wished her bf's dog was "meaner, like yours." Great ...
Somebody else in this neighbor's household once asked me if my dog were a seeing-eye dog. Let's see ... for starters, I'm not visually impaired, but also, the dog is 13 1/2 years old, she's not all that well-trained, and she's your basic brooklyn mutt, not a german shepherd dog or a lab or any other breed typically used as guide dogs. WTF? The question cracked me up, but it's disturbing that people with this level of "knowledge" of dogs are breeding them.
edited for half-drunk late-night typos -
I saw those folks as well... unless it was someone else. They had what looked like a big Rubbermaid bin of puppies. It breaks my heart when I see this kind of thing as well as the random animal abuse that I see generally in CH (and PH) that I try to avoid Nostrand Avenue as much as I can (despite the fact that it's on my way home usually)... there's always something. I'm just writing this because it feels better that I'm not the only one upset by these things.

I once had a landlord who was convinced the best thing you could do was to breed a daughter to a father dog. He didn't at all understand why that could be a bad thing and thought it made for a much better dog.
Then again, after a morning of fighting with his wife, the same landlord told her in front of the detectives she had come over when she was packing to leave him, that he wasn't going to hurt her and if he was, he would have shot her that morning. Not quite a rocket scientist.
