crisis for cats/how can we reform shelters?

I posted here about an urgent need for cats to be adopted from the city shelters. I understand that the moderators want animal related posts elsewhere however I would argue that there are times where rules need to be 'broken.' Many posts , although also important, in that section are of cats that do have temporary homes.

How many people ona day to day basis go to the PETS forum?

Someone might be considering adopting and be swayed by knowing of an urgent situation that is systemic within our city.

If you are interested and can foster or help a cat, (Robin in Brooklyn, Mocha in manhattan), please look under the Brooklyn Pets section of Brooklynian. call now #212.788.4000. One will be euthanized today, Robin; mocha tomorrow or Monday.

I think there needs to be a reform of our city shelter system.

Cats that are healthy and perfectly fine and either abandoned by humans or whatever the situation should NOT be euthanized.

They are better off on the street than in these shelters.

Iwould love to know if people have ideas on a better structure.

As someone on another list said, there are less mice and rats if there are cats around. I think cars are the biggest peril- living on the street, if helped out a bit,is not a terrible life for most cats.

If you are able to help out, many thanks.

  • I visit the pets forum waaaayy too much.
I have aspirations of being an old cat lady.

(something must be done about our shelter system, but fundamentally we need to address the way we think about pets and breeding as well.)
  • We've set the rules up about what posts go where for a variety of reasons, most of which have been formed over time through a lot of experience with what people do and don't want to see. People who are interested in pets DO visit the pets forum, and that's where this belongs. Sorry.
  • i'll join the ranks of being a cat lady one day. but not till i don't mind my furniture :p being half destroyed.

anyway i read the pet section all the time.
  • cat, this maybe a silly question, but have you looked in to assisting/getting assistance from TNR groups, like Slope Street Cats? They do about as much as you can really do with the cat population problem...

As far as reforming the shelters... the problems isn't with the shelters, it's with the unchecked cat population overloading the shelters. That's where education on neutering and organizations like SSC come in...
