Bike Racks! — Brooklynian

Bike Racks!

Did anyone else notice all the bike racks that were just installed on Vanderbilt? There must be 20-25 total of the u-shaped racks that were put in on both sides of the Avenue (approx three per block by my count).

Anyway, it's nice to see changes on Vanderbilt like last year's traffic calming lines and now these. Was the merchants' association behind the racks? If so, thanks!

  • It'd be good to get a fix on who to actually thank in writing when something awesome like this happens.
  • Yes, I freakin noticed! I got one right in front of my shop on Saturday afternoon, and it thrilled me so much I bought those guys a lemonade form the Brooklyn Parlor! To my surprise, they were not from the city, may be hired by the city, but not a city truck. They put their sticker on the rack, if you're interested. I feel like I have my own private bike rack at work. Yippee!! =D> =D> =D>
  • Apparently you can request a bike rack from the city: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bicyclists/rackfrm1.shtml

First they have to study the site and deem it suitable, but hey. worth a shot.
  • Noticed when I was hanging out with the kids at Soda Sunday afternoon...great for the street. And, how cool is that new bus shelter near Soda? I haven't seen these many other places...
  • Here is the official word from Craig Chin at DOT's Press Office:

Nobody in the neighborhood made a request but we are working on installing racks in neighborhoods throughout the city.

New York City promotes bicycling not only by providing bicycle lanes and paths, but also by providing on-sidewalk bicycle parking racks throughout the City. Since 1996 our CityRacks program has installed approximately 4,000 bicycle parking racks, with the capacity for about 10,000 bicycles, in response to requests and through strategic placement initiatives. An annual installation of 400 to 500 racks is planned for this and future years. Transit stations, retail shopping districts and commercial office districts are targeted for continued CityRacks installations.

Vanderbilt Avenue is a neighborhood commercial corridor in an area that is experiencing growth in cycling. Approximately 35 bicycle racks were installed in the Vanderbilt Avenue vicinity in recent weeks to support the continued use of bicycles for shopping trips in the neighborhood.
