Favorite Neighborhood Nosh?

Hey hey folks, my parents are comming in for dinner on Fri, and I am trying to find a place to take them. We've done Le Gamin, Amorina, Joy and Burrito Bar on previous occasions, and it's getting harder for me to think of someplace new!

Obviously the hubby and I usually trek over to the Slope when we want yummy nummys, but alas....my parents are from the vast suburbia of NJ and hate walking ANYWHERE. So I was wondering if anyone had any yummy (not TOO expensive) PH dinner suggestions I might have overlooked!

(and hey.. if you have a SUPER AWESOME dinner place in PS that you LOVE, please feel free! They might actually want to drive over there...:P ;) )

  • Take them to the new Mitchell's on Flatbush -- I think that would be a *perfect* place to take visiting parents!

    And maybe Beast?
  • And Gen, if they're in to sushi and/or other Japanese.

Oooh! I've not heard of Mitchell's! What kind of food do they have there? :D

Beast is deeelicious....but I think it might be too expensive for my 'rents taste...perhaps I can convince them.. ;)
  • What about Chavella's? it's inexpensive and BYOB which eases the strain on the pockets ...
  • I think my dad comes to NY to visit Islands, rather than to visit me :) It's a little tiny, but the food is lovely and the teeny treehouse diningroom is a great "Brooklyn Experience" for out-of-towners.

    There's a thread going here:
    http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36539

There's definitely a wide price range there -- it can get pretty expensive if you order wine or one of the steaks or something, but they also have several more affordable options.
  • Hot Fish at Deacon Blue is the bomb
  • Teddy's might be a good option too -- not terribly expensive and BYOB.
    http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=36005

One good things about Teddy's and Mitchell's is they both have such nice backyards. If the weather's pleasant that'd be lovely. Mitchell's hasn't had their grand opening yet, so they're not terribly crowded and the staff is super-attentive, and their back patio is *beautiful.*

Chavella's is indeed awesome but tiny, and all indoors.

Oh! You could also take them to Cheryl's. That place has a super-cute backyard seating area too.
  • teddy's has been a big hit with out out-of-town guests -- great food and a little more space than a lot of the restaurants here. i don't mean this in a bad way, but i think it was like a little breather from city hustle and bustle for our rural/small town family and friends. the patio is lovely, and the prices are great. huge portions!

chavella's also always a favorite -- cheap, amazingly good food. byob, with no corking fee. you may have to wait outside for a table at peak hours.

has anybody been to deacon blue lately? they were great when they first opened, then things seemed to go downhill, but i've heard they have a new chef -- any reports?

if the time comes that you're willing to spend a little more for an OUTSTANDING meal: sorrel, tucked away at st marks and carlton. this may be my favorite restaurant in the city, and here it is in walking distance! expect to spend ~$40-50/person -- $25 prix fixe 3 courses, plus great wine list by bottle and glass. not cheap, but i think it's a helluva deal for the quality of the food. menu changes daily, but it's always incredible. i've even ordered things there i would normally shy away from, figuring that maybe [dumplings, blini, etc.] is often bland and dull, but here's my chance to taste a really good version.

(i know i sound like a shill, and i wish i were -- i would live there if i could.)
  • Wow thanks guys!! These are all great suggestions! And so many of them are new ones' I've never tried myself before (Islands, Decon Blue) I also had no idea Cheryl's did dinner too (I LOVE their brunch). Also Chavellas has to be my favorite Delivery option for Mexican food, but I've never actually eaten at the place before... Sweeeeet!

Sweettea - Oooh! I am glad you mentioned sorrels! I've walked by there quite a few times and always wondered what it was like...I have a few "celebratory" dinners comming up, I will definately put it on our list!!
  • Damn, now I'm hungry!
  • I agree w/ a lot on this thread. my corporate lawyer friends love coming to the nabe for sorrel - we've never had a bad meal there. granted, we're usually having to cough up $60/each in cash because of the sheer number of bottles of sparkling vino we get but whatever.

I also really like albano's other place. amorina is good but ... ALISEO! it's good and has a nice prix fixe.

deacon blue was a HUGE let down to me and I haven't been back.

has anyone tried the chicken & waffles at shane's? cause that dish at deacon blue was an extreme disappointment.
  • Subject: no burrito!!!

Burrito bar??? Who would even consider taking their parents to burrito bar???? Unless you want them to fart all night long, otherwise please don't even consider it...Geido is a good one, Bogota, the flatbush farm, garden cafe, babouche, long tan, Blue ribbon, but no burritos!~!!!!
  • Beast would be great but it takes about an hour to get food on your table from the time you place your order

I've never had that experience at beast. ever.

disclaimer: I play in a weekly poker game with several of the cooks at beast and think they're cool ladies. but, like I said, I have never had an hour wait from order to table.

i have. (and also watched people seated WAY after us, who clearly knew people there, get served first.) i already went into it elsewhere, and i'm glad other people like beast, but this definitely can happen.

wow! was this on a weekend? I will say I generally only eat at beast during the week and I usually eat at the bar (since I'm usually either alone or with one other person) so I think that has made their service a bit better. I do know that on a tuesday night, I have no clue who is cooking b/c two of their most efficient cooks are playing poker so ...

I'm with alafairnadia here. Me and the better half always sit at the bar. Their bar staff is my favorite in the 'hood. Friendly, attentive, etc.
  • you can find my original post about it here http://64.21.158.241/~brooklyn/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2665&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0&sid=b34e0c533ab5f16954439395767f7141, is you're interested.

it really happened, it really sucked, it didn't only happen to us, and i'm not in any hurry to go back.

ouch. and I can totally understand and support your non-eagerness. brunch service is one of those things that very few restaurants can pull off well (just read kitchen confidential if you don't know what I'm talking about). I haven't tried the beast brunch, so I can't personally comment on the quality of service/food delivery. that sucks, though. I'd hoped they had a good brunch service. :(

EDIT: d'oh! no no reservations -- that's his tv show, silly girl! (talking to myself, here)

You really should give it another chance. Go for dinner. Sit at the bar. Report back.

    Go!!

LOL! Well My parents saw it on their drive in and wanted to try it. We're all fans of Mexican food, farting aside... ;) Alas, Burrito Bar did not meet expectations so I doubt we'll be back....

As far as Blue Riddon, Garden Cafe etc..thats a wee bit out of our price range for a casual family dinner experience, I am dying to try them though once I have a occasion that warrents a big ol' no holds barred fancy meal.

I absolutely ADORE Chavellas for Mexican! SO yummy! We've only had it for Delivery though, I've never been to the actual restaurant..I will have to try it!!

Beast does get really slammed for brunch; not sure if they really have the capacity to handle it, but that's mostly because they're so popular which is an overall good thing. I went there this Sunday with my girlfriend for brunch and it was a standard wait (15 minutes, maybe) to get a table. And then from the time that we ordered it probably took another 45 minutes or so to get our food.

That said, I still love the place. Good food, great staff, reasonable wine list... you should just try it for a weeknight dinner. You'll be much happier.

it's super cute! and, while they don't take reservations, I totally strong-armed them into taking a reservation for my birthday dinner a few months ago ("I've got 10 people .. come on .. please?!?!") and we had a GREAT time. and their delivery is also great. yummy!
  • Chavellas - cactus in eggs is the best thing ever. Yummy in my tummy
  • There is also Noona's and Tavern on Dean
