Board Rules- be nice
we have few rules here, but the primary one is we ask people to be nice in order to foster a neighborly tone here.i didn't realize anyone on this board would judge what qualifies as a "nice" comment. this thread didn't even go anywhere and you immediately pointed to the rules. last week or two anytime there is a little tiff, someone jumps in to point out the "rules"
seriously, i'm like afraid to post. god forbidden i'm not "nice"

one reason for what you're seeing as jumpiness on the part of the mods might be the number of threads lately that have "gone somewhere". it's tiring, frankly, and, speaking for myself, i sometimes wonder whether a stitch in time might have saved nine, you know? all of the mods are volunteers, who have other things to do.
also, these are discussion boards. when things get so snipey that people are only posting to be defensive (and aggressive), whither discussion?
"be nice" doesn't mean you can't disagree; just be civil while doing so. -
Have to agree with SweetT
Also, some people think they're being witty or funny when really they're just being jerkasses. -
Brooklynian, what's a jerkass?

ok, i get it. obviously something happened and i'm just clueless. as i mentioned, "be nice" just seemed a bit much this last week or two. -

Not so much in the Park Slope board, but on some of the other boards, several threads have degenerated into really nasty flamewars lately that have taken up WAY too much of the mods' time and energy. So yeah, my poking my head in on that thread on the PS board was sort of the equivalent of the frazzled mom hollering, "AM I GOING TO HAVE TO PULL OVER THIS CAR?"number of threads lately that have "gone somewhere".

Agreed, as a fellow mod, it tires the heck out of me telling them to play nice, yourself included Imboogie, on more than one occasion.
That being said, agree to disagree, just do it in a civil manner. OR someone may feel they need to PM the poster or edit the thread.
Put nicely?

Jerkass:
A highly rude or insensitive person.
Outta my way, jerkass!
by Tyler Pence
One who displays the characteristics of both a jerk and an ass at the same time.
That jerkass just cut me off.
by Johnny Mize
An insult formed by removing the word "jack" from jackass and replacing it with the word "jerk." Basically describes a person who is being a real jerk. Used when you need to get the point across that a person is a jerk where just the word jerk won't cut it.
"Don't be a jerkass."
"You're such a jerkass, this is why nobody likes you."

i'd add that the grammar of this formation can be interpreted as above -- with "jerk" as a similar-sounding substitute for jack OR as an example of the use of "ass" as an intensifier (as in "long-ass time", "boring-ass post", etc.)

For example, if you don't understand why someone might complain about the neighbors' barbecue smoke, would it kill you to say somehing like, "I *love* the smell of barbecue smoke. Is there a lot of it coming into your apartment or is it just the way it smells that bugs you?" rather than climbing up their hiney?
i really get what your saying but this is absurd.... now you're giving examples on how to respond to a thread.
fine, this is the last you hear of me on this topic. just let me know when you think i'm being an asshole. greenwood doesn't seem to have a problem expressing that.
PS: thanks for volunteering. i love this board! -

(I fixed the quote tags so that it's a little clearer you were quoting me there.)
Sorry if I went overboard in giving an example of what someone might say instead. It seemed to me like that thread needed it, since so many people responded so nastily right off the bat.lmboogie wrote: fine, this is the last you hear of me on this topic. just let me know when you think i'm being an asshole. greenwood doesn't seem to have a problem expressing that.
I don't think you're an asshole over this, just for the record.

I think it's a good thing to explain the "be nice" policy again once in a while. It's not because we want things to be all puppy noses and fairy dust, I promise. And I'm glad you love the board -- I do too! -
The mods might consider adding something like a douchebag icon next to posts that are annoying. It's a wordpress plug-in that's really hilarious.
Here's the post on it: http://www.younggogetter.com/2007/08/28/douche-bag-our-first-official-wordpress-plugin/
and here you can see it in action (scroll down to see comments):
