park slope / van brunt post office

yet once again, the PO has "lost" one of my packages. the delivery confirmation # shows it was delivered. only i was here, and there was no package.

more so, in speaking with the people at the PO customer service, i was told that my carrier told them they he/she ALWAYS rings the bell and/or leaves a note for packages, and never leaves them in the hallway.

i told her this was false, and that within an hour i could get XX people to say so. at this point, she's calling the PO back to speak with them...

want to try to affect some change? vote!

  • same here - last week the guy just threw a package containing meds into an area inside the front door - just tossed it - didn't ring the bell, didn't leave a note, didn't do anything except toss it into the building. How do I know this - 'cause I saw him do. And when I confronted him about it he just shrugged it off and said "file a complaint."
  • I'd rather have it put into a locked vestibule than to have a UPS/FedEx missed-delivery sticker on the door.
  • Our main guy Walter is great, but oh shit, when he's on vacation, the trolls come out and all mail goes wacky...I get stuff delivered from blocks away.

Generally he puts small packages in our milk box (yes, we have several circa 1960's) or it's delivered by the USPS truck man, who also rocks.

A general Van Brunt hater myself, other than these two fine folks
  • You forgot one option, "You are home all day, they never ring your bell but leave a Sorry We Missed You note telling you to pick up your package." I'm convinced that they don't even bring the packages with them, they want you to go pick it up yourself. Yet another reason I have everything delivered to work.
  • caseopele, i'm sure that's what happened with the delivery that has now vanished into thin air. poof, gone.
  • When I lived on 5th Ave I had several packages "disappear". A couple pairs of Gap and Old Navy jeans as well as cartons of cigarettes. I wouldn't be surprised if someone who works at Van Brunt is wearing those jeans right now!
  • Subject: should be another choice...

    here's what happens to me:
the USPS delivery guy rings the bell, then barks/growls at me if my response is anything other than "don't worry, I've already gently floated down all four flights of stairs in anticipation of your arrival and am actually standing inside the vestibule door to receive the package"
this is (always) the guy who just brings packages, not the daily mail.
usually by the time I make it downstairs, the package has been thrown up to the first landing.
    thanks!

and, boy, don't get me started on the folks who work the package window. I got into a fight with one of them that resulted in the worker flinging a package back over a shelf in anger.
how they manage to screw up alphabetizing is beyond me!

it really takes the joy out of unexpected gifts.

also, I've taken to traveling to Red Hook for non-package related Postal items. They're very cool there.
  • The package guy seems to have things under control. It's the mailperson that, after two years, can't deliver our mail properly. However, this has made us bond with the neighbors.
  • I had a similar experience, right around the holiday season/my sister's birthday. The package was rushed, and magically disappeared for a good couple of days. In trying to track it on the USPS' website, it sat in Jersey City for a few days, made its way to Brooklyn, and disappeared for almost a week. It missed my sister's birthday and, with Christmas Eve on Sunday, it looked like it was going to miss that too. And, of course, no one at Van Brunt had a clue where it was. I ended up walking to the post office on that Sunday, caught two of the delivery trucks, and the guys were nice enough to check through all the packages they had, and no dice.

It wasn't until two hours later, when I got a call from my family that my someone found the package. Whichever guy delivered it that day decided to leave it... behind the garbage cans/recycling bins. (Perfectly normal when, oh, someone was home, the bell was working perfectly, etc.) At least it got there. I try not to use USPS delivery if possible now.

That all said, it's not bad when our normal guy Ron is working. But if he's on vacation, all bets are off.
  • Of the five packages sent to me via the mail last year, the post office lost five. That was a particularly bad year, though. In previous years at least 50% of those sent to me made it through. In each case, I filled out the little pink slip, went to the post office in person, called, written emails, etc. Nothing works and there's no evidence that any of my complaints were ever acted upon.

I try never to use the USPS for anything and if a package has to be sent to me via the mail, I make sure it's sent to my work address. And this year has been great: No packages sent to me via the mail....no packages lost.
  • ironically, after the woman at the PO told me yesterday that my carrier in particullar ALWAYS rings the bell if there is a package, i went down this morning and saw two for me in my lobby. of course, neither of them were the missing package
