carnival! — Brooklynian

carnival!

ok why has there not been a post about this already?

so i'm new to carnival, but i really want to participate and experience it - maybe its a little late (considering the parade starts in just a few hours) when and where is the best place to join in the action??

i was todl the best time to go was 9 or 10am, but then heard the 'festivities' go late into the night, is it pretty much allllll day?

  • i'm just getting home from j'ouvert now, and it's still going strong -- one band was all the way back at classon still -- so i'm guessing the parade will start late.
  • I can not hear the music  , they probaly didn't start it's 9:19am.
  • The parade is supposed to start at 11am. It runs from Utica Ave to Grand Army Plaza on Eastern Parkway. Since crowds tend to be large, most people try to get there early to get a good viewing spot. The vendors will be setting up and the food is awesome. Contrary to the negative comments, overall it is a fun day with great music and food.
  • just wanted to say, also contrary to the negative comments, carnival was awesome! I showed up really late, at like four, but the parade went well after 7pm, it was great, the atmosphere was great, i had a lot of fun, walked all the way to kingston avenue from classon without realizing it! i love living in crown heights :)
  • It's too bad that those guys who got shot on the Parkway today didn't have as much fun as some of the posters here, especially the guy that's dead now.

I don't think the guy who got locked up with a machine gun in Lincoln Terrace Park is too happy with today's parade either.
  • Oh ParadeRest, give it a break! One shooting and one arrest for gun possession out of a para with a million people? I'd call that a success! I went to the parade and the beautiful thing about is that this is the only time all those different islanders can get together safely because of the huge police presence. Thank you, NYPD.

yes, it really is too bad. it's sad that there was any violence at such a joyful and fun event. but that doesn't mean i regret going or won't go again.
  • ParadeRest.....obviously any shooting is a bad thing...however 1 shooting in a crowd of 1 milliion people is pretty good statistically speaking. Coming from the UK, there is far more violence at the average soccer match.....

I think the neighborhood behaved incredibly well, I saw a happy and friendly atmosphere throughout, at least throughout all of Crown heights North....
  • There were several shootings. One shooting in front of 935 Eastern left a man seriously wounded and in critical condition. Another shooting left a man dead. There was another man in Lincoln Terrace Park with an assault rifle. Multiple arrests were made along the route for gun possesion.

We won't mention the multiple calls for shots being fired in which nobody got hit and the shooter fled before police got there. There were large fights, stabbings, assaults with bottles.
  • I still think it is a pretty good result given the magnitude of the crowd. I, for once, had a good time watching the parade and people all around me were cool. There was a very heavy police presence, and as I pointed out earlier, we can thank the NYPD for having been there.
But I disagree with PR in only focusing on the bad parts. For the large part of it, this was no mayhem and no "perp parade" by a long shot. It was actually pretty cool.
  • Parade rest is soooooooooooooo negative... I am not sure if it's an effort to show off that he knows the ins and outs of the crime or just to be nasty or what.
He is always saying how awful it is here and after two years, we have not had a single problem in our area (CHN) and are so happy to be here...
  • Since I only recently moved to the area, this was the very first time I have ever been to the parade. I spent a few hours along Eastern Parkway and enjoyed it thoroughly. I never once felt uncomfortable in the crowds of people and I really loved the beautiful outfits in the parade.

As far as the news was concerned - I only saw one article about any violence at yesterday's parade and they appeared to have caught 3 people who were involved with it.

Seems pretty good in a large group like that.
  • OK- we were all wondering what the heck happened yesterday when everything stopped dead for over an hour, yet knowing exactly what had happened...it was unusual especially because while every year something goes down (remember the two little ones who got run over a few years ago- so.sad.) and yet the parade NEVER comes to a complete halt like that.

My mother texted me today congratulating me and my hood for having a relatively low violence holiday. nice woman...

Sounds like a flashback to similar problems back in the 70's and 80's. I recall that Giuliani a few years ago put a ban on alcohol sales at the WI parade. Was that lifted.
  • yeah, sorry, i don't retract my statement
i hadn't heard about the shootings and it's a shame, but in a neighborhood where *normally* there are shootings, people caught with guns... i'd say a parade with at least 1 million people there, packed around eastern parkway, is a pretty good turnout if there was only one fatality. again, seriously a shame, but over a million people enjoyed themselves.

i was wondering about that too. i was surprised by the pina colada stands selling alcohol (let alone the guys selling shots and bottles from the sidelines, but i'm guessing the city didn't give them permits...). i don't remember any alcohol being sold last year -- do i remember wrong, or did the policy change?

I don't think the policy changed. People were just pushing further this year, testing the limits of what they can get away with.
