Advice for Prospect Heights Newbies?

read the link below. also, anything east of washington is crown heights. so don't listen to the brokers or craigslist..

The Met on Vandy works for most groceries but, on occasion, I've had problems with their produce. The Key Foods on Flatbush seems to be more consistent. Or, in the summer, you can join a CSA if you're around in the early evenings. And the grocery store next to the movie theater across from the Key Foods on Flatbush has a decent fish counter.

Not sure what subway you take, but if you're going anywhere but downtown Manhattan, learn to love the Q. Even at 5am it comes every 12 minutes and during rush hour, more like every 6. For a while I took the F to the C and one night sat for 45 minutes waiting for the F to show up again after I watched it pull out of the station from the stairs down to the platform.

On the weekends, though, most of Brooklyn is walkable from PH, even up to Williamsburg or over to DUMBO so take advantage. Also, Fort Greene is really close so you can hike over to check out some of their restaurants once you buzz through the quality joints in our own nabe.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Enjoy the neighborhood!

This has been debated here quite a bit.

The majority consensus is that PH is bound by Atlantic to the north, Washington to the east, Eastern Pkwy to the south, and Flatbush to the west.

That's a ridiculous argument. If I frequent the Spotted Pig, does that mean I live in the West Village? Or, to make it closer to your argument, I do frequent Taro Sushi (which is clearly in Park Slope). Does that mean I live in Park Slope (I live on Underhill).

In an effort to get back to the original question, one of the beauties of this neighborhood is that it is near so many things, even if it's not directly in our neighborhood (no matter where the lines are drawn). BAM, the park, the library, the gardens and the Brooklyn Museum...all within walking distance.

Bergen Bagel at Flatbush and Bergen is awesome. It may look like there's a long line. Don't be intimidated, it moves very quickly.

Get to know your neighbors quickly. Walk around the hood a bunch before you move in so you can get a feel for the place. Then check out all the places near the hood. Park Slope, Fort Greene, Crown Heights.

The B69 runs up and down Vanderbilt. It's not the most frequent bus in the whole wide world but when it comes, it's pretty fast. And it can easily take you to the Pavilion movie theater if you don't want to walk. (say, in the winter when it's cold)

Also, the B65 goes down Bergen to Smith Street where there are lots of great restaurants. (just remember on the way back, you have to pick up the 65 at Atlantic)

There's an easy to get to Duane Reade on Flatbush as well as Kings Pharmacy.

I second the motion that the Flatbush Key Food is better than Met, though it doesn't always have everything.

Lessee.... other things that occur to me....
My friends love Geido. I swear that they've been having an ongoing competition to see who can move closest to it. Gen is ok; I was told by a guy I was talking to at Beast one night that it's better on Sundays and Tuesdays(?) maybe when there's an older guy as the sushi chef and not so good on the other nights when he's not.

One bar that I like that I don't really see get mentioned on these boards is Mooney's on Flatbush. It's mostly a dive bar with a bit of a local place mixed in... not completely divey. But it's good for a beer and a game of darts if the mood ever strikes you.

I don't know how that Indian place stays in business; they never seem to have any customers. But their combo meal isn't a bad deal... my ex-gf and I used to split one combo meal and one additional entree. The kachori appetizer... indescribable but very tasty. Tavern on Dean has a fair kitchen and serves really late (midnight maybe?).

For wine, I've been in Fermented Grapes but their selection seems kind of limited. The other one down on Bergen seems more extensive. And for beer, there's a great place on Bergen and Washington. Also, a number of the businesses in the neighborhood do things for First Saturday with the Brooklyn Museum the first Saturday each month. Apparently they skipped September b/c of the parade/festival, but will have it going again in October. And that night the museum is open until 11.

That's all the stuff off of the top of my head.

I think that if you check the actual hits, a lot of those are in fact complaints about Soda, (although there are definitely Soda enthusiasts as well).

Most of the Daily Heights Happy Hour regulars here are Mooney's fans, though, including many newcomers.

why would there need to be a million threads about mooney's? mooney's rocks. if you can't see that for yourself, why should i explain it and then have to deal with crowds?

PH IS THE BEST!!! I moved here 5 yrs ago and I think it's the best!

Geido- best japanese and great service
Moony's on Flatbush and Freddy's on dean st are the best dives.
Sepia- best happy hr deal ($2 beer) it's on Underhill and Lincoln Pl
Soda- has good bar food
Prospect Perk-the best coffee shop for me. Great service!!!
Chavelas on Classon btw Park and Prospect is a great BYOB mexican (they deliver)
Best indian on Flatbush ave...
