Very predictable, speaking on the majority of blacks in CH when YOU don't know the MAJORITY of blacks in CH. I do!
You know what honestly I hate to generalize but alot you all on this forum are very insensitive and dishonest to say the least. You won't give credence to ANY of the points MA and I have made in this thread. We're being very genuine speaking from the heart about a nabe we're from and love. Most of you just impulsively write back to fill your sense of entitlement. It's cool though...I own, my parent's own, both my uncles and aunts own..we will be here. I wonder how some of the current renters will feel when that stadium comes and the rents go up even higher, therefore forcing them out of this nabe they claim they want to be part of and love...But hey it doesn't affect me though. My property just appreciates.
Now how selfish is that way of thinking?!!!
I wanted to come on here, contribute to the forums to give a perspective of someone thats from the neighborhood as most of your are not. But I think I'm done...un friggin' believable you people are....
Great. You know who I know? You dont even know me, let alone who I know. Further, if you are implying that the majority of blacks in Clinton Hill love a good ol' wine & cheese tasting event, I find it curious that you guys havent started a few of these events in the decades that you've been here, instead of the many dozens of annual block parties.
I've lived in Flatbush, East Flatbush, and canarsie. I've spent significant time in Prospect Heights (before it became hip), Crown Heights, and now CH. I dont find the blacks here particularly different from the blacks in those other neighborhoods, and I certainly didnt find a multitude of wine & cheese tasting events. Again, that doesnt mean that no blacks are into wine & cheese, but for some reason you want to convince me that the majority ARE into wine & cheese. I reject that based on personal experience.
Just because your views are heart felt doesnt mean I have to agree with them, or that they're right. You want to debate, well here we are debating. Get on with it and stop moaning about people not agreeing with you.
BTW, my property continues to appreciate too. Assumptions are dangerous for all of us to make.
Yes I'm telling you, you DON't know the majority of blacks in CH and to speak on them is just plain ignorant. And just because you've lived in some nabes does make you an authority on the people you lived around Mr.Omnipotent. If I wanted to start a wine tasting event I could fill a venue easily w/ ppl of color from the nabe who would be interested. Matter of fact with just the ppl in CH co-ops alone(lafayette side)! Just because there hasnt been one that you know of doesnt mean the majority or good portion of black residents wouldnt be interested. Besides those who are can find it in the city easily or another nabe, which I'm sure they do. We don't live in small town America where everything has to be in your 6 block radius!! Just because it isnt doesnt mean you can generalize and assume. And block parties are community, family events inclusive to children and adults, I really don't see the correlation between the two. You ignorance in astounding, seriously...
Also not to trash ppl in other nabes but if there's no difference between blacks in CH and those areas then how come the same problems that plagues those areas don't plague CH?! CH has NEVER been PREVALENT w/ the problems those nabes have..It's not even close! -

...What, you're clairvoyant and know everyone's address? That's amazing! How do you do that???
....Oh, wait, I get it, it's another "unless you had x% type of racial makeup and were a resident for 3.5 generations you're an outsider and don't know what it's really like here" conversation.
Well, since you say you're leaving, I'll just say that "it's been...interesting talking to you," and that perhaps it's your antagonism that may be putting people off. Just a thought.
Do you read or just skim?! I CLEARLY said FROM the neighborhood, not LIVE in the neighborhood. And you don't whats it's like from MY perspective as a life long resident just like I don't know whats it's like from yours as a fairly new one. Most ppl on here are closer to yours cause they are new residents for the most part. Most of the older residents don't even know this forum exists! -

1. I thought you were leaving.
2. The original poster came in and politely explained why she didn't ask the "african american male" she saw with the shirt where she got it -- and asked another question about Clinton Hill Day, an event which she said she was at right along with you. You haven't answered.
3. Perhaps you can clarify something. On the one hand, you say that people who haven't lived here for a certain amount of time are outsiders and are ignorant, but on the other hand, you also scold people for not speaking to their neighbors directly. Let me ask you -- if you are, as you claim, indicative of the typical "real" Clinton Hill resident, then this must mean that the typical Clinton Hill resident has a low opinion of outsiders, as you are exhibiting.
So, then, if a typical Clinton Hill resident is going to have a low opinion of outsiders, then exactly why would someone new to the community want to talk to them in the first place? -

I called one person in this thread ignorant for speaking on a majority of ppl he doesnt know and his blanket generalizations. I didnt say anything about outsiders, never used the word. I have said all ppl are welcome in my posts numerous times...Once again do you read or skim?! And as far leaving...I changed my mind...Sue me!! lol
I dont believe the OP poster because on another site she said she saw a teenage girl wearing the shirt...but maybe she was on the phone too lol. -

Maybe we need to define what you mean by "know" when you say I dont know the majority of blacks in CH. I, for one, think I know enough about the majority of Blacks in CH to support my assertions. Again you mistake your so-called "heart-felt" views as fact. Your views are no more correct than mine. Maybe if you'd lived in the hoods I have lived in you would be able to make the comparisons I have, and actually know what you're talking about. Also, you say CH hasnt had the same problems as the other areas? Are you sure you're a long time resident here? Even a recent resident will tell you that crime continues to be a problem here, grab and runs, and car break-ins and such. Shoot, car break-ins that used to happen regularly in East Flatbush that were mostly connected to the crack trade have since all but stopped years ago, meanwhile they continue to happen with great regularity in CH. Give it a rest.
As for the wine tasting, we'll just have to agree to disagree. I know plenty of blacks who would attend such an event too, but I would bet that the vast majority of the attendees would be white. Prove me wrong, otherwise agree to disagree and move on. I dont know what part of that statement is any more ignorant than the assumptions you are making, but hey, continue to sling mud. It shows you in a very positive light. -

So maybe we should ask YOU whether YOU read or skim?

"You guys"?? That seems to be your biggest problem - bunching everyone into the same group. Its as if you dont even know who you are talking to half of the time. You want to talk about prevalence of crime in CH as compared to other nabes, across how many years? Back up these broad statements with facts too please. While you're at it, show the numbers proportionately too. Unlike your opinions on other stuff (such as you pompously claiming that YOU know the majority of blacks in CH, lol back that up too), crime stats ARE available for the assertions you made. You might actually be right, but I am certainly not going to take your word for it. Just the facts please, Sir.
When you are employed, the employment stats are 100%, when you are unemployed, the unemployment stats are 100%. Whatever the stats show regarding CH in comparison to crime in other nabes (proportionately!) all I know is my friends in East Flatbush and Canarsie are not having their cars broken into anymore, but my neighbors in CH are. There are threads on this board supporting that too. Prevalence? ask those who have had their cars broken into how prevalent it is. Or maybe you can just look at the broken glass on the sidewalk in the morning.
As for CH day, I am not even convinced that YOU know when and where CH day is. Numerous posters have asked you in good faith, yet you selectively choose to ignore them. What do you have against them? I couldnt really care when it was because the event I was at had all of my neighbors in attendance, and lot of other people too. What I saw there still supports my original point, which directly counters your ASSUMPTION as to why more "newbies/whites/whatever you hang-up group is" werent there. -

Anyway, with all due respect, I too have had my fill, for now. I hope you can reflect on this thread and see that nobody is out to get you and change your world. At the same time, things are changing, with or without you. What that means in your life is entirely up to you. In the meantime, if nothing else, long may our property values continue to rise!

Once again you guys don't read. I never said there is NO crime in CH. I said it's not as PREVALENT(check the definition) or on the same scale as most of the other nabes you mentioned, thats a fact. If you know the majority black ppl in CH then how come you thought you were at CH day when you werent, huh genius?! Knock it off already...You do NOT know the majority black ppl in CH.

Like I said most of the nabes you named have a history of a higher rate of crime than CH...All except Carnarsie. -

For libel? I'd have a case...
See, I can quote people out of context too.
But the question is, what did such a childish little move accomplish for you aside from hurting your case? -

Why do you simply choose to ignore the word "proportionately"?

You have yet to prove your point. Take your time. There's no rush.
You might consider apologizing to Queen and Lesterhead too.

I'd like to point out that the crime stats you posted are not quite as useful without a total population count vs. complaint count. Additionally, I would like to point out that while the 71st and 77th posted decreases in grand larceny in the last five years, the 67th posted a very modest (2%) increase, the 88th posted a 42.9% increase, and a 128.5% increase over the last ten years! As someone who doesn't have a horse in this race, and followed only out of morbid curiosity, I would like to respectfully point out that the statistics you posted appear to support Guvna's position that that sort of crime is on the rise in Clinton Hill and falling in other areas. For what it is worth.

I'd like to point out that it is annoying when people delete their posts. Like the bknest one that was here a five or ten minutes ago and is now gone.
Anyway. -
There is such a sense bullying on this board...
One person posts their feelings and opinions or vents and they're viewed as hostile, offensive and owing someone an apology...
Another person vents and they're just venting and blowing off steam
Wanna know the difference between the two posters? Hmmmm, let's guess?!
Such a double standard, but this is the country we live in, go figure...
And whats with the moderators monitoring when someone vents about "yuppie new comers", but any remarks can be made about "ghetto residents" or demolishing "the projects" with no response at all? Let's all be sure to not offend the Yuppies!!!!! They certainly have it hard enough...
Just an observation.... -
I didn't realize that calling housing projects 'the projects' was faux pas. The bodega up the street from my house (across from Lafayette Gardens) is actually called "The Project" minimart or something. Someone really should teach those guys some manners

Just an observation....
One person inquires about a certain t-shirt.
Another berates them by proceeding to accuse them of not being a "part of the community" and lying about how she saw the t-shirt. I showd that he was wrong on the accusation of lying. That would normally compell an apology.
As for the rest, you are right. A rant is a rant. However, must we all sit by and accept some rambling that seems to be hostile at newcomers just for the sake of it? All neighborhoods change. How quickly people forget the reception blacks got when they first moved into certain areas. It wasnt right then, just as this sort of crap isnt right now, no matter how it is dressed up. -
I don't think he was hostile at all...
He wasn't burning a cross (which happened to black people) he was venting on how new comers don't embrace the larger community (which he is entitled to his opinion about and which I and a number of others posters agree with him on and have expressed)
Agree with him also on the selective way people respond to things...
Moderators be warned... I'm feeling an anti-yuppie attack coming on, get ready to block me!!!! -

It's fair to view an accusatory slant to be offensive.

In terms of his views on how newcomers interact with the community, he is clearly free to suggest that they dont interact how he thinks they should. Then what? Can others not disagree? What about when he wrongly suggests that someone lied? Is it "ganging up" to show that he was wrong and maybe an apology is warranted?
As for others agreeing with him, great. More ideas in the marketplace of ideas should lead to vigorous debate. One of those posters said that newcomers were just passing through. WOW, what a sweeping blanket generalization. Some might take offense to that. Besides being wrong, it also had an accusatory slant. I guess it would be bullying to disagrre with them to?
Well, I am one to agree that we should thrash these things out. It might be a little ugly, but so what. OF course the mods tell me to chill, but I try to keep things civil. I try hard to ignore personal attacks and focus just on the ideas presented. I was called ignorant. So what. On many topics I am ignorant. That wont stop me from debating if I think I still have something relevant to say. Dont view it as bullying. It is lively debate, between some people that hold certain views, and others that disagree. At the moment it may look like bullying due to the lopsided number of people that disagree, but we may yet have a load of "guests" who sudddnely arrive to show support for him.
You dont have to burn a cross on someone's lawn to send them a message that they are not welcome. Canarsie was a good example of that. Ask me about that sometime. The real point is why? To make people feel less welcome and maybe guilty over living in a place that they can afford and maybe even like? Does anyone think that will compell them to WANT to hang out with the so-called oldheads? There are better ways to encourage participation. Particularly when dealing with total strangers, lol. Maybe they are secretly hoping it will force people to leave. Mere speculation on my part, or course. hhmmm. -
Can someone tell me when and where Clinton Hill Day is? If, as one of the posters said, all food, t-shirts, etc. are free, do they need volunteers, donations? I would definitely be interested in helping out.
I've been here for about two years, so I'm a newcomer I suppose. However, I say hi and chat with my neighbors, I shop within the neighborhood, I vote, and I'll probably get priced out of the neighborhood within another couple years. -
BTW, the t-shirts were on sale again on Clinton Ave yesterday. Available in white or black.

Mod here
Everyone has had a couple of days off from this board so I'm hopeful that cooler heads will prevail here. I just wanted to point a couple of things out here, the first being that sweet tea's comments about yuppies actually was in reference to Rule #1:* Be nice. If you can't be nice, go to a different website. "Nice" does not mean kittens and rainbows. More like, "general level of civil decorum." It's OK to argue and disagree, and in fact we encourage it, but don't stoop to personal attacks, name calling, shouting wild generalizations like "YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF GENTRIFYING YUPPIES", or other childish behavior.
Secondly, the Rules are there for a reason. We want want to encourage conversations among people, and not have threads devolve into name calling.
Lastly, the mods are just like you guys and are not always on the boards (contrary to popular belief we do have lives away from the boards). If you guys think these conversations are getting out of control feel free to PM a mod and ask them to drop in and take a look at the thread.
Thanks. -
but.but...this neigbourhood has always been somewhat diverse..an the two worlds have never mingled as far as I can see..so its not really just a "newbie" thing
-
I did, in fact, first see a teenage girl wearing the shirt, but it was the first I'd seen of it and made note of it in passing. Later, someone emailed me asking about them. So, on the second time I saw one I planned on asking about it but was unable to.
-
Given the conversations here lately, perhaps a slightly different shirt may be in order...

(hee hee...) -
I'm just amused that a good part of the argument seemed to be about how people here don't try to become part of the neighborhood, or inform themselves about the neighborhood, but all the questions from people about "okay, so then when IS Clinton Hill Day anyway" have been completely ignored.
Howdy, Stranger!
