Doesn't seem to be in Google's edition:

thanks for the link. apparently the google edition does have it:
http://books.google.com/books?id=HNxXaZpGLLwC&dq=the+subtle+knife&q=the+empty+house&pgis=1#search
but I don't know what edition/publisher they're working off of. hopefully it's the US edition, just because I'm being all psycho. -
Ahh yes. It's also there on Amazon:

You can check it in a bunch of editions, including the 1st Ed. American version vs. the 10th anniversary re-release.
Might one enquire why this is of such burning importance? -
er. I was concerned it had been changed to say something like cul-de-sac or something more 'American'. just checking. I'm paranoid.
-
I see. I've always thought that Glenn Close should be a place not a person.
-
no wonder I keep getting confused, though - apparently this paperback edition I have has text that has never been included in any other paperback edition - and it's one of the new ones (I just ordered them from the UK a few weeks ago). I knew things were changed - sucks that I can't just blame US publishers, though.
-
What did they change? Did the author correct inconsistencies, or just tweak?
After learning the Golden Compass movie is coming out this fall (w00t!) I just reread this trilogy recently. The ending is so powerful, and so sad, it still blows me away. -
not sure - I read them several years ago and am rereading also b/c of the movie's upcoming release. there are bits (small bits) where I'm thinking "wait, I don't remember that AT ALL" and some of them will slowly come back and some of them don't. but, I'm a lousy reader this way, I can't think of them to save my life. the only reason the word "close" jumped out at me was b/c I thought for sure if it'd been in a previous edition, I would have looked it up and thought "huh, ok, interesting" and remembered it. thankfully, I probably just chose to ignore it and move along, thinking I'd figure it out through context instead (last time I read the books, I mean), and it did exist. but then I looked more closely at the book and the publisher clearly states that there are bits and pieces added into the paperback that were not previously available in any paperback edition.
in other words - I have no idea what's changed, but I was sensing it a bit and now have some vague confirmation without specificity.
