5th Ave south of 9th St
We're moving this fall and are currently in the thick of the usual agony of a NY apartment search. Anyone have any details on what day-to-day life is like on 5th Ave south of 9th St? I'll admit that it's been a while since I've been down that far on 5th. I remember it being pretty busy, and not a lot like the "new" 5th Ave of Asian fusion, fro-yo, and day spas. Any deets would be appreciated.

I live down that way and the hubbub of daily life creates a busy feeling on 5th ave. Yeah, there are still dollar stoes on 5th ave but there are signs that the Asianfusion/fro yo businesses are on their way.
-
Depends on how far past 9th you go, but even in my VERY southernly stretch, we have a new sushi place next door to Vin Rouge (bet. 17th and 18th), a healthy fast-food place called Fuel that is not open yet but seems like smoothies, wraps and salads (bet. Prospect and 17th), and rumors of a big fancy Mexican place where Aaron's used to be. There's an Edible Arrangements going in where the Quizno's was. The south stretch of 5th gets more and more gentrified every week.

Plus the best coffee in cafe Regular on 11th st just off 5th ave
-
Thanks - I'm not necessarily saying that I long for the transformation of this stretch 5th Ave (ok, maybe I could do with a few less discount clothing stores), but I do like to be able to pick up a carton of soymilk or grab a bite to eat.
-
Just out of curiosity, 8thandPrez, will you change your username after you move? :jocolor:
-
It's not like 5th and Prez, but we love it. Union Market is opening on 7th and 12th, and a health food store on 5th bet 10 + 11 sells soymilk and wheatgrass, etc. And in spite of some of the complaints I've read on this board, Steve's C-Town is pretty great. Fresh produce.
See you at Timboo's! -
Hey hey don't knock those discount clothing stores!! A new one opend a month a go on 5th and 13th street and for $2 each I picked up an assortment of work out pants that retail are $45!! No kidding.. But.. I like the new restaurants opening and the "New Age Type" Bodegas that stock things that I really do eat. This stretch of the Slope if filled with miravles I thought I would never see.. including places that sell organic milk and such.
-
I love the south slope. Not as busy, and not as crowded. I walk there when I want to get away from all the "nice" restaurants and overpriced "lifestyle" shops. And there's plenty of wonderful places like Kitchen Bar and Side Car, Commonwealth and Buttermilk, to keep you busy.
-
It's crazy busy. Sorry, just like saying that. I agree with what's been said. You'll be close to the Y if that interests you, the F & R trains. Interesting stores...restaurants. Rite Aid taking over Eckard. Tofu and thankfully non-tofu places. A nice mix, not as pretentious as the "other 5 ave". Oh, and the 5th ave fair which is way better than 7th heaven. Not that you couldn't go when on Prez & 8th.

. too many postcounts invested. -
Subject: moving to GoSoSlo also
Since I will be in the south west corner of Park Slope I am calling it Gowanus South Slope - "GoSoSlo" - looking forward to all the new places opening south of 9th street on 5th ave. Sidecar looks good and you just cant beat Buttermilk for its Jukebox. -

The last time I got coffee there I almost puked. For real.
Red Horse on 6th Ave @ 12th Street gets my vote for coffee consistency & atmosphere.
But yeah - south slope is awesome, and gets more awesome by the day.
For granola-y things: There's a healthy/organic food store called Balance on 5th Ave b/w 17th & 18th. There's also Pumpkins on 8th Ave @ 13th St.
For superb & affordable drinks in a relaxing/welcoming environment: Quarter Bar on 5th b/w 20th & 21st is your place. Seriously - best new bar in a long while, show it some love.
And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Bar Toto (11th & 6th) for affordable tasty dining. -
I had Labor day Brunch at bar Toto.. Fritatta.. really lovely breakfast.
That was the first time I ate breakfast there. Only criticism was $3 for the not so good cup of coffee, that was in a smallish cup and no one offered to refill it. Am I being cheap here or does that seem like over charging for the coffee? -
Well, my name may end up 5thand12th or 4thand5th. I'll keep you posted.

I moved recently from 4th and 15th (to Prospect Heights, which I love), but there's tons of good stuff in the old neighborhood.
I agree with Doldrums about Cafe Regular--good coffee and tasty hardboiled eggs sitting on the counter, if you're brave enough to try 'em. Be sure to check out Tacos Nuevo Mexico on 5th and 11th, I think? (it's just north of Commonwealth). You can't beat the roast pork taco for tastiness and cheapness. Sidecar, which Just opened on 4th and 15th, has yummy fried chicken, but I think they are waiting on their liquor licensce. I also love the Lebanese (I think?) Place on the Southwest corner of 15th and 7th, and Cafe Steinhoff (14th and 7th) has delicious $5 goulash on Monday nights!
Commonwealth and Buttermilk both have great jukeboxes, and on the 4th Thursday of the month Buttermilk hosts the Cashank, a Johnny-Cash-Hank-Williams sing-a-long jamboree that must be seen to be believed.
I just sent a really long "guide to the neighborhood" to a friend who was in south slope for the summer--PM me if you want me to send it your way (it's a bit long to post here).
Good luck with the move, and have fun in South Slope--it's a great neighborhood! -
BAR TOTO RULES!!!!!
-
Yes.. but does Bar Toto's Coffee rule?
Hey my brunch was first time I didn't go directly to Alchohol.. so never did have coffeee there. -
My family and I just moved to 12th and 5th from Garfield and 7th and I have to say I LOVE our new neighborhood. I know almost all of my neighbors (which I like). Plus you are close to all the high end stuff but you don't have to deal with it if you don't want to. Its great to be able to grab some toothpaste or random odds and ends at the dollar store when before I would have to pay more for the same thing. Its amazing the great things you can find at the dollar store. The only downside seems to be the amount of trash on the street. For some reason after 9th Street 5th Ave has a lot of trash blowing around.

Let's not forget the M/R trains. For all people's grumbling about it, talking them 2 stops to Atlantic can get you just about anywhere, and I never wait for more than 5 during rush hour.
-
I moved from Union and 6th to 11th and 6th ave. Honesty I prefer it down south.
F and R trains are better than Q.
Nuevos tacos is incredible. You have to try the grilled cheese soft taco. It looks awful from the outside but the food is great.
There are a ton of these spanish restaraunts too, the one on 6th and 13th has the best fried pork chop ever....
The ctown on 9th st beats the keyfood on 7th av. You lose the coop, but i lived across the street from that place, and i dont miss the traffic at all. fwiw the bus on 9th street to redhook takes you to fairway, which kicks the coop everyday of the week.
Overall the south slope is much more interesting imho. Only north slope places i miss, taqueria, gamestop... but then again, those places are just a brisk 10 min walk away. My only real gripe is the otb parlor on 12th... ewww. -
The B and Q are way better than the F and R.

Yea, the OTB place creeps me out. I don't understand who uses those places or why. Shouldn't they be doing that kind of stuff on the internet?

I agree. Same with those porno shops down under the BQE in Sunset Park. Who uses those places or why? And shouldn't they be doing that kind of stuff on the internet too? -
The people who hang out at the OTB and the porn shops are not exactly the most wired section of the population....Although when I was walking along 4th Ave around 19th the other day, I saw a printout from Craigslist Casual Encounters that had a very *graphic* photo on it. Used to be that the homeless guys would take the video boxes from the porn shops to wank to but now I guess at least some of them are online.

I can't believe someone is posting the F and R trains are better than the Q. I moved from 6th and 12th to 2nd and 5th after years of being sick of the break ins, the trash, the lack of amenities (like a decent grocery store) and noticeably more ghetto element. The population density is just not there to support significant retail or pedestrian activity, and with the crazy rezoning of this former slum, it will never change.
I work in Midtown, and taking the R train to the B or D trains has shaved 15 minutes off my commute easily over the F train. The F train is by far the WORST train in the city. It is always overcrowded and ridiculously slow. -

I actually always have great luck with the F. I live on 4th btw 21st and 22nd and it's actually my preferred way to get home from work. When I go home from work I used to take the B/D from W4th down to the R/M. There was always an F in the station before a B or D came but I'd wait. But I took the F a few times once the weather got nicer and found it's actually faster to take the F to 4th Ave and then walk down to 21st than to wait for a B/D then wait for an R/M. So yea, I back the F, he's my boy.

Well isn't the most obvious answer that "these people" don't have computers and internet connections?
OTB places became a social club for losers from the moment they opened their doors and the one on 5th Ave is no exception. Over the years it seems a little less skeevy but I developed a habit of crossing over and never going past it years ago. That habit is still in place. -

No shit, Sherlock. I was kidding. -
mm woops.. my mistake.. sorry..
but no need to get nasty.. sheesh.. -
Is that OTB still open?
Howdy, Stranger!
